  1. I'd assume that they would be treated much like any other public access defibrillator. Inspect them annually and after each use. These devices are extremely low maintenance and really don't need daily checks.
  2. Its amazing how quickly they can go available from the hospital and from RMA's to be assigned to the MCI.
  3. Does anyone have a plan where they can meet LifeNet at some point between their community and WMC so in places like E. Fishkill where flying is faster you don't wind up waiting at the LZ for 18 minutes?
  4. Just like when an ambulance shows up but doesn't transport the helicopter can't bill. Billing is only for services provided.
  5. If your IC ever calls you back a letter from him should be enough until you get the actual card.
  6. Good point WAS. I missed that article, but caught it clear as day here.
  7. I can't imagine having to first tell a family that the patient is dead and then convince them to agree to the meat wagon. Its enough all ready convincing them that there's no reason to transport to the ER for further resuscitation. However I know several medics who will transport "healthy" arrests just so that the hospital has a chance at selling organ donation.
  8. I'm really glad this thread has come up, especially in light of the recent flight out of Yonkers. No more than 15 minutes from Jacobi, 20 to Harlem or Lincoln and 25 to WMC. They could have been pulling up to the ER before the helicopter was off the ground. The last three posts all ready covered this pretty thoroughly, but wanted to add, if you're so worried about the chances of an accident or traffic via ground, what about the chance of stat flight not arriving safely. You can throw all sorts of what ifs out there, but when something goes wrong in the air it goes wrong very badly.
  9. Part time incarcerations have been going on for years all over the country. Its not uncommon for shorter prison terms where it would remove a child's only parent or for a "minor" crime with mandatory minimum sentences so that the criminal can keep their job. Actually, one of Malcolm X's killers serves on the weekends.
  10. Mike, it would be whatever the local standard for Basic Life Support is.
  11. How much a year for an ALS fly car? Early defib is great, but useless without early high quality CPR. How about a community CPR program? Seattle has a cardiac arrest save rate of over 2x that of NYC. The protocols are the same and response times for EMS about the same. The big difference is a remarkably larger portion of the population is trained in CPR and far more of their units arrive with CPR in progress. Its a cute idea but to put defibs in everyone's car, but far from cost effective.
  12. I flipping hate the 12% money. Odds are when the poop hits the fan it will be you average line unit who is on scene first. Haztac and Rescue units usually respond in with a heads up as to the conditions they are facing. So the argument becomes about all their extra training, so I say train them on OT for their reward. Otherwise you're paying two people who 99% of the time do the same job a different wage. I think the cocktails were getting to you. We're hoping for significant raises, but we're currently headed towards arbitration. Our contract covers different years and doesn't have parity provisions that PD and Fire have. Besides, the recent bump given to PD wasn't a pay raise. It was an increase in work hours. No where else would your boss increasing your work week be seen as a raise.
  13. I'm looking at 10k for shoulder surgery and the guy is "helping me out". Bring on the vet!
  14. All right seth, we get it. You like foam. But this fire is well beyond the alcohol contained inside the structure. There's also an incredibly small chance for any flammable runoff. Most liquor (80 proof) needs to be heated to close to 100 degrees before it can sustain a flame. Lets say for the simplicity sake they had 1000 cases of 80 proof liquor in the basement which equals about 1200 gallons of ethanol. From the photos they could have been flowing at least 1400 gpm. In 10 minutes the flash point of that ethanol would be almost 200 degrees if none of it had burned off and climbing.
  15. Westside Highway is a deceptively dangerous rode. Real easy to speed on and constantly being worked on. RIP officer.
  16. WTF 2500 for medical and travel expenses. If thats not a typo I'm going to see a vet before my surgery.
  17. Weren't WCPD and NYPD aviation recently in Ct for the perp search after an officer killed himself?
  18. The vast majority of all gasoline comes from foreign oil. The difference is where it is refined into gasoline. In that respect I believe Hess does have proportionally the largest US production capacity. However refined gasoline and gasoline components comes from many countries including, the UK, Virgin Islands, Canada, Russia and the Netherlands.
  19. So did the service change to accommodate this drop in price or were they just trying to milk the town for a few extra K
  20. I really hate to beat a dead horse, but how much packaging time did this guy need? Best case scenario 10 minutes to Bedford, 10 minutes to asses and transfer, and another 10 back to WMC. Bedford to Kensico Plaza via 117 is 40 minutes and Pleasantville to Katonah Bar and Grill is 20. Why the bird?
  21. yeah, there's something missing here. First, I don't know of any ER's that monitor brain function in cardiac arrests and second there's no concrete evidence that external brain monitoring works for sedation monitoring so I'm willing to be its equally ineffective in this setting.
  22. I get the support we turn out on these pages for strangers with whom we share the bond of related careers or communities, but what makes good ol' Ted so special? In the past year there have been other elected officials throughout the country stricken with illness who have not gotten this out pouring of support. How about the other thousands of Americans stricken with cancer right now? Where is their support thread? Hell we could keep it to emergency responders and have everyone spending hours in prayer everyday just to cover their names. I get why the media jumped on it, Kennedy is a household name, but why are we so quick to follow?
  23. Or instead of carrying around a carpenters square for that one application drive the fork end of the halligan through the door above the panic bar. You can then lever it down onto the panic bar.
  24. They are fire fighters who work for the sheriffs dept. They are not LEO's.
