Every new boat goes into dry dock for hull inspections at some point. Doing so now before the spring gets going makes sense.
-
You talk about doing more with less, but no matter what trucks are on scene you need manpower. At what point do we stop trying to do more with less and just get more help?

Politicians are not the only people out there who are irresponsible and greedy. No one put a gun to any of Madoff's victims heads. In fact they were clamoring to invest with him. No one thought to second guess his impossibly high investment returns because all they cared about was all the money he promised them. Lets not forget all of the smart investors who didn't chase fairy tales but became over leveraged in the market when it crashed. Either through outright fraud or simple mismanagement if everyone was managing their own finances we would have a lot more destitute people out there. People that would then need government support. Social security is a safety net. That's all it ever was and ever will be. You shouldn't be relying on it for your retirement. That is where pensions and defined contribution plans come in.
-
I haven't seen a good breakdown of the details yet, but I believe anyone making more than 75k/year will be eligible to enter the defined contribution plan. If it follows the SUNY plan, its one or the other.

Actually last year NY was over funded. If you average out pension costs to the tax payers over a career rather than just the boom and bust cycle of the last 10 years pensions are an excellent investment for the taxpayers. Both social security and state pension systems were raided when they were profitable. I keep pointing this out, but you people on the right keep ignoring it. HAD GOVERNMENTS MAINTAINED THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS RATHER THAN REDUCING THEM BECAUSE OF STRONG MARKET RETURNS NY, NYC, AND I'm SURE MANY OTHER FUNDS WOULD STILL BE FUNDED WITHOUT THESE MASSIVE INCREASES. 2000% increases in taxpayer contributions is outrageous. But ask yourself what changed to necessitate those changes. There wasn't a surge in retirements nor was there a spike in payouts. The government finally got caught with their hand in the cookie jar. All of this applies to social security too. They kept kicking the ball down the road saying we'll pay it back later, but later never came.

"nyc.gov.fdny" does not work. It is being corrected at the shops and I thought was supposed to have been corrected on any other trucks before delivery. I guess not.

Ferrara was the lowest acceptable bidder. NYS now allows for rear facing blue lights. They wanted more visibility, but thought rear facing spotlights were tacky. These lights ensure driver distraction, make following difficult in poor lighting conditions and look great too.

Why does Katonah need a bond to maintain their facility? If the structure is sagging under the weight of the current apparatus, they are waaaaay late in addressing the problem. Generator upgrades and maintenance along with paint and storage space should be included with the general upkeep and maintenance of the facility. A training tower is a different story, but with Millwood, the Westchester FTC facilities, and some of the northern options; is another large training facility necessary? If they just need more storage space why not go with a shipping container or simple addition? Why spend $3 Million?

Why is it a surprise that Boston gets power restored faster than the suburbs? An outage in an urban area usually affects more customers and has a greater economic impact on the community as a whole.

I don't know the details of the protocols, but any medications not in the State EMS formulary and any interventions outside our scope of practice can be performed by the doc. In our system, the docs greatest benefit is preventing unnecessary transports. Not much a doc can do on scene for a medical emergency other than streamlining the medical control process. Doc can do whatever they want. We are only allowed to operate within our scope of practice. Doesn't matter what the doc says or does, but I cannot place a chest tube or amputate a limb. As far as unsolicited medical advice in NYC we cannot deviate from our established protocols. If the doc would like, they can talk to our medical control physician and get approval to authorize our medical control options. An on scene non-OMA doc is useless unless they want to carry equipment or take a turn at compressions.
-
FDNY EMS uses physicians in a variety of roles. Primarily they respond to MCIs where they can provide a much more efficient system of evaluating and releasing patients than the traditional RMA or transport for everyone involved. Then there is the benefit of on scene medical control. Running an arrest with the doctor standing next to you is much easier than the hassle of calling telemetry and sitting on hold. For confined space and building collapse rescues we have USAR physicians that provide on scene medical control for their specific protocols and even offer additional interventions outside the paramedic scope of practice.

Huh?? Head injuries are the big killer in pedestrian fatalities. If this airbag is hoing to catch the head of most these victims this will absolutely save lives. Discarding this development would be like chucking front airbags because the legs are still being crushed in a wreck.

Every new generation has had it too good, been too lazy, and will be the end of society as we know it. The greatest generation was great because they were faced with the greatest challenge ever to face a generation. If you have any doubts about todays kids (and I really do mean kids) being able to step up to the plate, just take a look at our military. At the start of the wars in Afghanistan and later Iraq our enlisted men and women entered the military at a time when recruitment standards were low and the military was, at least in my world a fall back. These kids, 18 to 24 years old stepped up and accomplished feats that were nothing short of amazing. Forget the success of the mission, the war, the occupation, whatever was the plan operationally. The day to day accomplishments these men and women achieved is nothing short of amazing. I have always been a firm believer that people perform to the level required of them. Put down a big enough gauntlet and people will rise to the challenge. We had our square rooters then and we will have them tomorrow, nothing will change that. But we also have our every day average people that will always do what must be done.

NYC has emergency marked ConEd vehicles with red lights. Not sure about a siren though. We also have a whole ot of PD available and can get an esourt for anyone to anywhere fairly quickly.

Those were the exams killed by the courts in response to the Vulcan's discrimination lawsuit.
-
Absolutely, that fight will a horrendous slog. I'm purely addressing the concern about providing paid coverage for less densely populated areas. It can be done.
-
If NYC can scale their coverage for everything from the population dense and call heavy areas like the south bronx to the quiet suburban settings like Douglaston in Queens then the county can do the same. LA County probably has an even more diverse combination of communities.

Not allowed. The Hibernians have very strict rules about who can march. In the past exceptions have been made, but they were for specific reasons. Don't let this stop you from coming out and enjoying the parade.

Sorry, have to pile on here. Nothing I have seen in my years of EMS has been as bad as the ped struck I saw in my 20's. Circumstances are everything. Seeing someone that was mutilated by a train was not nearly as hard as watching someone deteriorate waiting for help. The feeling of helplessness had a much greater impact. Being actively involved in patient care puts the entire incident in a different perspective that makes terrible things easier to process.

The test seems very similar to the last test. A lot of personality questions and comprehension stuff. I have the handouts (including the powerpoint) and once I get it digitized I want to get it out there. I'll definitely e-mail it to merit matters and anyone else that wants it.

As much as I detest the racial divisions they're attempting to drive into the dept I saw no evidence of exclusion at Taino Towers. I was one of several white candidates there. I pre registered and paid my $20.
-
Thats bullshit. I was allowed entry and so were several other clearly white candidates. I saw no group outside Taino Towers being denied entry. The place was packed and maybe they were denied for being late or not being registered, but I didn't see any group barred at the door.

That reminds me, the Brooklyn bridge is currently undergoing another major renovation after being found structurally deficient in several areas.
-
The cost of the span across the river isn't the problem. $700 million for a rail capable addition to the new bridge. It is the cost of building parking lots, stations, and connections to the current rail systems. The old span is in such bad shape a plan to build a single new span and rehab the old bridge as the second span would cost $1.5 to 2 billion more thsn the current new dual span bridge. So even assuming you could make it rail capable for 1/6th the price of vehicle capable you still haven't addressed the cost of tying it into the current network. The cheapest option of no new stations still requires substantial land acquisition and the construction of miles and miles of rail that cannot simply follow the Interstate because of grade and turn issues.

Just tossing a tourniquet to someone is useless. If they had any clue how to use one the pt would already have a belt or something else put in place. As it was explained to me NYPD would use available officers not involved in the search to remove victims to EMS. This to me seems the most practical short of adding a larger tactical EMS component.
