  1. Without knowing what they actually said libel is not protected by free speech. If you can prove what you're saying to be true and can sing it from the mountain tops.
  2. I never understood the effectiveness of these drills or the patrolling hercules and archangel teams. The legit terrorists are not stupid. They plan thoroughly and wait for the opportune moment. It doesn't take long to realize that these show of force drills don't do much more than drive around so they really are not a threat. One shows up, stop, stay in position and after a few minutes they move on. The hercules and archangel teams are highly visible and located in specific high density or high value areas. Thats great and all, but Terrorists in this country and abroad usually prepare at one location and then travel to their target. What good are on of these teams patrolling Manhattan stations in the bomb was put on the subway out in Coney and timed to go off when it arrives in Manhattan? So now something does happen, these teams of highly trained well armed officers now have to be contacted (not always easy in the subways) gathered and transported to the scene. These are all put in place to make the average idiot out there feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I'm safe because we have men with big guns to protect us against this threat. Lets not forget the officer parked in the car day in and day out on the Brooklyn Bridge, by the UN, and many other places around Manhattan. You try staying vigilant sitting on your butt for hours at a clip. Besides, these guys can't see anything more than what is immediately around them since they are just parked and cannot patrol. We have cameras all over the city, if they need a few more to cover every point of access to these high value areas then put them up and free these officers up to actually serve the city. Put more plain clothes officers out there to ride the subways if you want to protect people. My reference to legit terrorists is because clowns like the ones who wanted to attack ft dix and the idiots that had planned to blow up the tank farms and pipelines do not pose a real threat. Their roadrunner like schemes would be doomed to fail if they were even able to get them off the ground, which doesn't happen because solid police work shuts them down long before show of force drills or hercules teams come into play.
  3. It was nice to see a focused effort on rehab. You guys did a great job.
  4. I'm in an odd minority in that while I am in favor of citizens rights to gun ownership, I also believe the second amendment does not protect the rights of citizens to bear arms in todays society. This should have been recognized and legislation to address this problem should have been enacted. The supreme court in an effort to avoid the hassle that legislating gun rights would have presented chose to go with the spirit of the written word rather than the written word. Thats fine for religious interpretation but dilutes the power that our constitution holds. The authors of the constitution and our bill of rights went through great lengths to convey a specific message and even acknowledged the realities of change in an evolving society and included a process for modification. The 2nd amendment is written to ensure the protection of a struggling nation from outside forces and from one person or group of people from usurping the power and rights of the people. The need for a well regulated militia is no more and so with it goes the 2nd amendment.
  5. You're spot on Billy its a show of force drill. You can also find them ripping along the FDR or West side Highway.
  6. Why did you guys go with RMA's instead of just tracking rehab?
  7. Aerialscope advertises a 1000lb capacity in any position while flowing at full capacity. That should translate into 1500lbs while not flowing water.
  8. I am currently sans pager so I only heard the horns, but I believe it was initially dispatched as a minor alarm. That brings 2 engines and our rescue. The one and one you heard was probably 2371 requesting 1 and 1 to stand-by in our quarters when he arrived on scene.
  9. How the hell is this even an issue?! He's not the first and he certainly won't be the last. Is this really the act of an idiot kid? What about the streakers that were all the rage in the 70's. Hell, the character Robin Williams played in Patch Adams got quite the laugh from the theater when he pulled the same stunt at the end of the movie. Its bare butt. No one is any worse for having seen it and god forbid a couple of people might have even gotten a laugh out of it. The people calling for this kid to be punished for a stupid prank that caused no harm and no damage are the ones that need to grow up.
  10. The new HazTac buses are almost the same as the line buses. To accommodate the extra equipment carried by these units they added a through the box compartment. To accommodate the extra weight and length the trucks are now on F-450 chassis with a lowerable suspension. They also now have an intercom for communication between the cab and box as the window between the two is no more. The EMT's and Paramedics working these units are not firefighters. The Rescue medics are trained in crush medicine and are cross trained with the rescue companies so that they can bring treatment to the patient. All HazTac units are tasked with bringing patient assessment and treatment into the Hot zone and through decon. Fire is still soley responsible for rescue and hazard mitigation. This just allows us to follow them into many environments. The space is sorely needed especially on the Rescue units. Other than the extra compartment the trucks are pretty much the same. They are built by Horton.
  11. I'd like to point out that we rewarded our covering companies with a possible car fire for their troubles. In Pleasantville we like to spread the wealth.
  12. Just heard a rumor that NYS is in the process of approving Selective Spinal Immobilization. If the rumor is correct Regional councils have until the end of the year to develop their protocols and implementation procedures. Its about time.
  13. Read on another forum about a medic who couldn't even get close to sedating a very large patient with 30mg of Etomidate. To the point where the guy was still grabbing at the medic. Personally I have yet to witness or read about anything like this. I've seen the transient apnea and myoclonis, but I have yet to see someone that 0.3 mg/kg couldn't put down for a least a few minutes.
  14. I take back my question. Guy was well over 300lbs.
  15. grumpy, keep it on the DL, but the firewall stopped this one. Once it was confirmed that all residents were out we went with the surround and drown.
  16. Its cheap and easy pre-hospitally, but from what I understand the continuation of the therapy is much more involved and not easily accomplished in all facilities.

  18. last one looks like it was too close to a massive fire. Firefighters can move engines in pump cannot.
  19. I was sold on a quality scope when I learned the value of heart sounds.
  20. Damn, ALS once again beat me to my addition. While the chief handled the political side of it very well and his intentions are great, they don't make much practical sense. You could be buttoned up head to toe in nomex, but if you don't have a protected air supply on when the car flashes you're going to be well protected corpse. Why not make the scene safe for the pts in the car and for those operating my eliminating any threats. FDNY insists that EMS wear their PPE and love to brag about the flash resistant characteristics, but fail to explain who are hands, heads or airway are going to fare. Bnechis, you are dead on about ESU. Turf war bull asside, its the biggest complaint about how ESU operates in NYC. Eventually something is going to go wrong and one of these guys are going to needlessly get hurt or god forbid get killed by something that could easily have been prevented.
  21. Why not just put the time you'd be spending in an I program towards the classes for a paramedic program?
  22. I've seen FDNY's Ford Hortons take some good hits and there are some photos that are truly impressive. The boxes hold up quite well in rolls and cab first collisions, but as soon as you make the box take the brunt of the impact its over.
  23. Locking storz are just as safe as threaded couplings. Neither will work if they're not maintained and engaged properly.
  24. We have a lot of base reactions that we teach ourselves to ignore. Turn into the skid, evasive braking manuvers, don't turn the wheel when you turn your head, etc. I know I sure as hell don't swerve for squirrels, cats, or rabbits. Deer, I'll find out when I get there. Diver training classes are great, but nothing beats hands on training in evasive maneuvers and size familiarization drills.
  25. excellent question. Maybe White Plains is looking to expand the stable. A horse with the right hook might have a chance.
