  1. Stop trying to bait people into a volley vs paid. I'm a volley, I don't own a home, I don't use the pool, no movie theater either, and can't even use the gym but I can see the other side of the argument and I agree. Other people shouldn't have to foot the bill for our problems. I'd be just as pissed if I had to pay for extra staffing for New Rochelle or any other paid fire dept that I don't get the benefit of protection.
  2. How about maybe he's just not so bright and screwed up. If he locked them in the car, then how did his mother manage to get out? I'm willing to bet this was more a negligence issue. He was trying to work and take care of his parents. I'm not trying to relieve him of any responsibility for the result, but I don't think he is a sick person or POS. Just not so sharp and in way over his head.
  3. I remember as kid being a huge fan of those carts and I still see kids keeping them in business. The parades are for our residents and their families. If they want silly string let 'em have silly string. How often is it getting on the rigs or on our uniforms? Either way so long as its removed in a timely manner and not allowed to dry on it doesn't damage the finish.
  4. The argument that if you're a volunteer you shouldn't be compensated is ridiculous. Volunteers have always received some sort of compensation for their time, they always will, and they should. But it shouldn't be coming from the state. If your town wants to pay for your gas or give you a break on your taxes then so be it, but as bnecis has so clearly pointed out many others are all ready paying for their fire protection, they shouldn't have to pay for more. Its bad enough that millions of dollars a year are being dumped into grants that are supporting poor funding and financial decisions. PPE, ventilation systems, and other basic necessities need to be provided by the community. Grants should be spent on equipment that benefits broader areas, but thats for another thread.
  5. While the new commissioner can't fix everything the commissioner does set the tone for how the dept is treated by the city. A strong personality with a desire to do right by the dept can go a long way. A yes man who is just going to toe the line for the administration equals more of the same garbage.
  6. This isn't even about a baseball rivalry. This is about some lunatic who finally snapped. It could have been over anything, in this case it just happened to be that he was possibly a Yankee fan. Then again there could be more going on here. There was the supposed Yankee/Red Sox brawl in Yonkers a few months ago that turned out to be about something else.
  7. I never understood all the stress surrounding RMA's. If they need to go, find a way to convince them. If they still won't, let that become the doc's problem and call medical control. If they don't need to go, still do your assessment, document accordingly and get a signature. Its easy to get dragged into court, all they need is your name and address. For any legal action to stick you have to drop the ball. So long as you do your job right there will be no problems and that starts with documentation. It doesn't matter what you say to them, what they say to you, or what really happened during that call. All they care about is what you wrote on your pcr.
  8. 4.289 per gallon credit card full service. Gulf on White Plains Rd just north of Pelham pkwy
  9. Nothing being done with oil right now will make an impact in the next 10 years. Offshore drilling, anwar, shale, etc. Neither will ethanol, fuel cells, electric, they list goes on and on. Only way to fix prices in the near term is to stop selling oil futures and drive out speculation.
  10. There have been changes in oil extraction technology that had made some shale deposits profitable. Now with the exploding price of oil shale is an extremely attractive alternative. Now throw in that the US has the vast majority of shale deposits in the world and the picture just gets better. Before shale had to be mined and then cooked to extract the hydrocarbons. The newer technique I had seen involves drilling and pumping the hydrocarbons out. First they freeze the ground water around the area and then heat the shale. This should allow them access to deeper deposits without strip mining.
  11. The CPR card is just documentation for employment, feel good, etc. You are completely protected with or without the card.
  12. FDNY, we always have to document time of pt contact and even have a series of check boxes to document reasons for delay to pt contact. One of the things being looked at in the CPR study being conducted is the time to pt contact and factors affecting it.
  13. We all ready triage fire alarm responses, but as soon as you start suggesting non emergent responses people get all fired up like you're trying to close houses. Do you roll out the same response for rubbish fires that you do for multiple source structure fires? No because that would be unnecessary, wasteful, and add an unnecessary risk. Accidents are often not the fault of the responders. Off the top of my head I can think of 3 accidents (one in Mt. Pleasant and 2 in NYC) that have resulted in 1 civilian fatality, several firefighter injuries, a totaled engine and tens of thousands of dollars in damage to property that were 100% not the fault of the responders but they were responding to non-life threatening alarms. Responding non emergent is not the same as complacency and not giving a F***. You pull up to a 2 story vacant p/d with fire on all all floors are you going to make the same push you would make if it were the same 2 story p/d at 2am with a car in the driveway? We all ready modify our responses and actions on scene based upon the information we have available to us. We then take that info and make a risk vs reward judgment. Yeah there could be squatters inside that vacant, but odds are there aren't and there's also a good chance that anyone who goes inside that building won't come out. At the house with the car in the driveway, only one car around here they could be out of town maybe on vacation but am I willing to not make a push based on that? Lets throw a bicycle in the front yard, I think we're all trying to get inside that house asap.
  14. Have to be HazTac before you can get Rescue and have to maintain all of your training.
  15. Rough day for WEMS medics between this one and the Katonah accident. How many ambulances beat stat flight to the med center? Allegedly, one agency that arrived after Air-1 was on the ground managed to arrive at WMC faster. I'm sure many here are tired of me harping on this point, but we continue to put our most critical patients on a helicopter that delays their arrival at definitive care and prevents the helicopter from being available where it can actually make a positive impact.
  16. Goose is close. According to the CIA world Factbook in 2007 we were consuming 20.7 million barrels a day and we produce 7.6. Democrats and republicans are not to blame for the lack of production. The bigger kink in the system is refinery capacity. In the US we are shockingly short on it. Refineries are huge, ugly, and stink. They also have poop for public image. No one whether they be republican or democrat wants them built in their community. At a recent refinery fire in Texas last year the people from the company they interviewed were almost happy about the fire since it was going to enable them in increase capacity and efficiency. They were not allowed to build a new facility anywhere in the area and couldn't afford to shut down production before the fire.
  17. As much as I think these drills are a massive waste, the officers involved perform them in a very safe manner. Intersections are well controlled no one races through anything. On the highways these guys only do the speed that everyone should be doing.
  18. M' ave if you go back to the first page of this thread it becomes very clear that this is just part of the greater conspiracy by the Larchmont branch of the Illuminati to protect this rich kid from facing the punishment for the crime the EMT Bravo all ready convicted him of.
  19. Thats a great find. I wonder how many other communities this holds true with.
  20. donmoose, if people installed them the right way there would be no issues. But with anything build it idiot proof and they'll just build a better idiot. As far as removing an AC unit, on the inside pull it in. They are all suppose to be installed and removed from the inside so thats going to be the easiest way 9 times out of 10. Even that large in the wall units are usually only held in with a few screws and cheesy stamped metal frame. Easily overcome by someone who takes a second to find the spots that are holding.
  21. Makes perfectly good sense. The only problem I could see, is that it may take longer to get prime with 2 large diameter suctions. If you're struggling to prime 1 6", 2 is going to much more of a problem.
  22. Thats what an Aerialscope is in all practicality. It was designed after crane booms. There just isn't much demand in the fire service for scopes and even less for something stronger.
  23. collision avoidance systems aren't mandatory?? I would have thought medevac would absolutely require that.
  24. I was unclear in my wording before, and I'll try and prevent that. Yes the national guard in all its forms and related organizations are state militias and a vital part of this country, but they do not need nor do they benefit from the second amendment. The militias that were so vital during the start of this nation are now referred to as the unorganized militia and would consist of "able-bodied males at least 17 years of age and, except as provided in section 313 of title 32, under 45 years of age who are, or who have made a declaration of intention to become, citizens of the United States and of female citizens of the United States who are members of the National Guard." If something were to happen where our military was so over stretched or out numbered the selective service draft would be used, followed by the few states that have state drafts, and then if there were still any able bodied men left to fight there would be a call to arms. There isn't going to be anyone left. And if you're so worried a military coup that would eliminate the military and force a call to arms then you had better have a stockpile of rifles and ammunition because without it you aren't going to be much use to the militia. PC_420 Stop it. I have not said its old we should get rid of it. I have said it is impractical and no longer applies as written. My argument is not based on the actual right to bear arms. I am in fact a proponent of this right. Get away from emotional attachment and take a look at its practicality. So we need to be prepared to take the defense of our nation if we were to come under attack? So say tomorrow China decides to kick it off and sends their masses after us. The first move our government makes is the draft (see above). They are going to induct every able bodied citizen into military service long before any unorganized militias are called up. So we have the other option, a threat from within. Someone marches a Division into DC and takes over the government. Now without the federal military its up to the states. Who they hell is going to arm you? You're facing superior force armed with spit wads. The weapons currently at issue and the majority of the weapons in private hands are all but useless as a first line weapon. paramedico987 I stated that the minority opinion of the supreme court justices was primarily concerned with the repeal of recent gun control legislation. I however do not fear this as I believe there are laws that need to be changed and others that are so common sense that I am confident they will persist. I also love how everyone references drivers licenses and car registration as a model for gun regulation yet I have seen many threads come and go on this site about how ineffective both are in preventing bad drivers, unlicensed drivers, etc. I would also like to point out that my argument is about practicality for the 2nd amendment. Once again guns are good and the amendment has been out grown. Gun rights had absolutely nothing to do with the Nazi's taking power. They were voted in. The German people gave the Nazi's the power they needed. Once in power they changed the laws because there was no strong backbone to their government like the Constitution to prevent changes to its fundamental structure. This is what enabled Hitler to appoint himself supreme chancellor or whatever his title was. The gun legislation was only intended to prevent individuals from fighting back. The masses supported him. No gun laws would have made a bit of difference.
  25. The majority and minority decisions we're both focused on gun legislation. This decision wasn't about the 2nd amendment. The majority wanted to ensure gun rights while the minority is afraid that this decision could roll back any advances in gun control over the last 2o years. There are many laws that are still on the books everywhere that are pointless and some down right silly but they're still there. The idea of the president getting on TV one day and calling on the citizens of this country to take up arms and form up militias is absurd. There are many differences between Americans now and then that push this idea even further towards impossible. First and foremost then the average citizen carried a weapon of near military capability if not the same rifle the military used and they knew how to use them. Today we're talking about handguns. Not exactly the best primary weapon for combat. In the examples you cited there is clear delineation of intent to protect certain freedoms. As with the second amendment it is clear that the founding fathers wanted to protect the ability of the citizens to take up their own defense if necessary. I guess the whole point of my argument is that we no longer have the need for a "well regulated militia" and with it the right to bear arms for that purpose.
