  1. I guess the closest to that would be part time ff's that I've heard about out west for some commercial fd or paid per call volleys.
  2. I think the bigger problem is that fords are electrical nightmares. They fixed much of Jaguars problems, but can't get their crap together.
  3. First line through the front door? Why do they need the truck in there? Ground ladders work fine and give you access to the entire structure.
  4. wow, second post and the whole intent of the thread is shot to poop. Since people are going to post baseless lies I'll dispel some of them... 1. read the whole speech. Its nit picking a statement pulled from a speech intent on conveying emotion and gratitude for the sacrifices of the selma marchers. He was trying to connect himself to moment, if that is enough to not vote for him then please don't vote at all. 2. In "dreams of my father" Obama explains that his father grew up tending to his fathers goats while attending school. he later received a scholarship allowing him to study in Nairobi and eventually the US leading to his work in the Kenyan gov't. 3. When did he ever claim his father was a proud freedom fighter. 4. Odinga while claiming to be Obama's cousin has no evidence of any familial ties. 5. Maternal grandmother Christian, paternal grandmother Muslim. 6. Many Swahili words are Arabic in origin, kind of like those fancy numbers we use. 7. Just read this link http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/muslim.asp 8. again http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/muslim.asp Obama went to multiple schools. 9. No evidence that he ever claimed to be fluent. One times article notes that he speaks passable Bahasa. 10 & 11. Bush claimed his experience was from his father being a diplomat. But true, a few years as a child living somewhere is not enough. Its 7:30 my tour is about to end so I'm ending this here. snopes.com has details on the entire post http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/50lies.asp . Please stop posting baseless BS. You want to believe in ignorant rhetoric that is by all means yours to do as you like. Just stop spreading this garbage as absolute fact.
  5. A lot of people like to whine and complain about the apparent low quality of apparatus yet they offer no remedy other than to spend more money. Fact is a seagrave aerialscope is one of the most expensive trucks you're going to find and you get what you pay for. It has the strongest tip rating @ 1000 lbs while flowing water and is probably the most stable platform on the market. It has an extremely high safety record and as others have pointed out it has proven itself over the years.
  6. Looks like all that hose is rubber jacketed. Is there a specific reason for that?
  7. Not even close. Before the merger, take over, or what ever people call it NYC EMS was an after thought to HHC. Thats one thing people forget, NYC EMS was never independent. Were it spun off into a true third service I think things would have been even worse. From Koch through Giuliani EMS was never looked upon as an essential emergency service. Koch felt listing FD, PD, and Sanitation were the three big services a city must provide. He saw EMS a function of the hospitals since you could always take yourself there rather than have them come to you (This is the same mayor that while in office had to be picked up and treated by NYC EMS). Giuliani tried to dump EMS onto the voluntary hospitals by handing out nearly 50% of ambulance slots city wide. The Fire Dept saw EMS as a way to keep their run numbers up, increase their budget, and increase their influence within the city. As a result EMS has been slowly expanding out from its few hospitals to smaller and more spread out battalions, the fleet is newer than it ever was under HHC, we're now running more units than ever before, we have a quartermaster to provided all of our uniforms and PPE free of charge, and dozens of other small little perks that just aren't feasible with a 3,000 member service. Now there are many who disagree that things are better under Fire. To those I ask what has gotten worse since fire took over. The money is independent of what patches we wear or who's budget heading we're under. We still have to convince the office of labor relations and the mayors office how much money we're worth. The first step was becoming an independent bargaining unit apart from DC37. Next came being designated an uniformed service. Now that we have those two we'll see what our union do to get us some money. But even then it takes time. All these changes could have happened wether we were under HHC, PD, Fire or on our own.
  8. For the majority of Bush's tenure the Republicans have had control of the Senate. In 2007 thanks to Joe Lieberman becoming an Independent Democrat the Democrats took over the Senate. 2001 to 2007 were Republican controlled except for a 12 to 14 month period beginning in June '01 when Republican Jim Jeffords of Vermont became an independent. As for the House of Representatives, it was Republican led from 1995 till 2007. That is one unique feature of Bush's tenure, he went the majority of his 8 years with his party in control of both the House and Senate.
  9. Back in the day we had the benefit of a Dermatologist on the sidelines. His kid was on the team, so he qualified.
  10. I can't believe this is still going on. Someone goofed. Either they didn't properly secure the load, they missed damage to either the strap or they missed damage to the securement points. Maybe they had their house duty the night before and maybe no one had been doing it all month. This thread has degenerated into baseless accusations and assumptions. I have yet to see an incident that couldn't be traced back to a mistake on the part of some individual. Now this dept can figure out screwed up and administer the appropriate discipline.
  11. "Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." Absolutely one of my favorite quotes. However the key is essential liberty. An ID card with an RFID chip is not an essential liberty. Protection from illegal search and seizure, due process, privacy are essential liberties.
  12. As has been covered in every consolidation thread, NYS is a home rule state. The county cannot force anyone to consolidate. They can entice communities with services or cash, but they cannot force anything. Who has consolidated?
  13. Consolidation is a much bigger animal above and beyond switching from volly to paid.
  14. But that call volume is why it works. Without the call volume they cannot generate the revenue to fund an ambulance 24/7.
  15. Can we just accidentally fire a few cruise missiles their way. Just some concrete warheads and splash 'em down alongside the Russian ships. A friendly hello.
  16. I am firmly against socialized healthcare. I have housed friends from Canada seeking threatment from the best and I am currently watching my friend take his mother from England to Sri Lanka for cancer treatment. The Canadian didn't want to wait to have the next doc in line fix his knee. He was willing to pay to have the best doc available do. My English firend's mother was diagnosed with cancer that the govt has deemed too far advanced to be worth treating. Its not untreatable, just not worth treating. In England if you pay for any treatments not approved for out of pocket the figure you have enough to pay for everything and you lose your coverage. Since they have family in Sri Lanka she is now living there to get the same standard chemo and sub standard radiation therapy as compared to this country. Our system works for our capitalist society except for one glaring gap in coverage. Those with too much money to qualify for medicaid and not enough to afford private insurance. Massachusetts is currently running a system that addresses this problem and it will either break the state or show a way to fix this problem. One estimate believes the waste and fraud of the NY medicaid system could fund the expanded coverage to make healthcare available to all. Right now healthcare is available to anyone through American emergency rooms at zero cost even if you don't qualify for medicaid or medicare. You just have to be willing to sacrifice any hope of ever having credit. The people faced with this choice are the ones who need help right now. Since we're addressing military spending, healthcare, even energy policies in this thread, can someone explain to my why a flat tax rate doesn't work? I understand the richest of the rich take a bath with a flat tax, but I don't see how at 37k a year I should be paying a 26% tax burden.
  17. In PD and EMS members generally work in pairs or alone. A single FTO is all that is practical. As ff's you are trained to work as part of a larger team. Establishing that group mentality early is important where as independence is more important in PD and EMS.
  18. There is also a concern about how many of the 50% admitted over 24 hrs actually benefited from the flight. An uncomplicated femur fx will get you admitted to the ER but you may not necessarily need the flight. Allegedly this investigation has spawned a retro analytical study to look the documented finding by providers on scene vs actual injuries treated in the hospital. Apparently they're taking a detailed look to see if the problem is in assessment or procedure. I have one friend in the system down there but he's pretty low, maybe some here knows more.
  19. 30 y/o male found 15' below grade at a construction site. You are in what will be the basement off a building with access via scaffold or narrow wheelbarrow ramp. Pt suffered a witnessed tonic clonic seizure lasting "at least 10 minutes". Pt alert and extremely combative. PERRL. Patent airway. L/S clear & equal. Skin warm, moist, normal color. Urinary incontinence. No obvious injuries. Assessment difficult and vitals impossible due to pt's combative state. Co-worker reports he has a seizure history and is on unknown medications that he takes every day. Unknown other medical problems. Unknown allergies. Unknown events leading up to. Pt is on O2 @15lpm via NRB(sort of) and tied to the long board but not very effectively. What region are you from and what would you do? I'm in NYC. He got Glucagon 1mg IM with no improvement. Midazolam 10mg IM was approved through med control and administered. Once the pt became sedated the pt received D50 25g IV. The pt was then further restrained and transported without further incident.
  20. Coggs, I all ways look forward to your replies. Thought out and fact based. Thank you. I see Obama as an intelligent enough individual to not bury behind the eight ball in light of the very real threat foreign nuclear weapon development. A goal of organized mutual disarmament is something anyone would be hard pressed to fight against. To abandon your weapons in the hopes that others will follow is suicide. Hopefully any future changes mirror those of the past that recognize the tragic reality of nuclear war but maintain our ability to effectively deter aggression. In short reductions yes, elimination never. Missile defense is something that needs to be actively addressed. Current technology just isn't there yet. Short and medium range missile defense systems are practical and should be invested in. The problem is Bush made an ICBM shield for America the crown jewel and priority. Israel focusing on short range systems have come a long way. Some American money and intellect added to the Israeli system or hell even a new ground up system could provide some protection now to our most vulnerable positions. We still don't have effective protection from missiles that nearly every threatening country has. My problem isn't with the idea, its the blind ambition where they commit to the creation of a product at any cost. Clinton F-ed us with his plan to use Reserves and National guard as back-up while still being the worlds police force. There was a good book written , by I think Wesley Clark (could very well be wrong) where he explained Clinton's military plans and perceived lack of action. He was committed to not taking the lead in any protracted military conflict hoping to rely on a growing and more aggressive NATO. With his military cuts and lack of action from the UN and NATO (raise you're hand if any of you are surprised) he was informed he couldn't afford an all out war. Now with a lot of people screaming for us to stop trying to save the world and take care of ourselves first it looks like 'ol bubba's people had a good idea just crap execution. Don't sell your house before you have a new one. All ways seemed kind of simple to me. Its a cheesy line from a horrible movie, but "power perceived is power achieved". I completely agree and Jimmy Carter is a great example of that. However our new enemy is not intimidated by power. He enjoys being the underdog. It allows him to justify his tactics and recruit from a disenfranchised minority. Being the baddest dog on the block challenging terrorists to come get us isn't the solution and neither is turning in on ourselves and licking our wounds. We're letting Europe take the lead in Georgia right now and its almost embarrassing the way Russia continues to tell them to go screw. I hate the way people compare these past few years to the 1960 and the political unrest of the times, but damn comandchief your statement sounds like the same garbage that was spewed by older people back then too. "Every Generation needs a new revolution" is a simple yet pertinent quote from Thomas Jefferson. THe revolution may not work but its needed to breed new ideas and prevent stagnation. A globalized economy was once feared to ruin this country and while many have suffered and lost jobs the country as a whole has prospered and improved.
  21. Yeah. Obama hasn't really suggested anything new. Some things have been dropped by the current administration that he is looking to bring back but Obama has yet to announce any ground breaking plans that weren't started by someone else. For that matter neither has McCain. That's why I don't get how either side can say that electing one or the other spells doom for the country. So far all I know is that Obama is Balck and doesn't wear a flag pin, Biden rides Amtrack, McCain is old and a veteran, and Palin is a woman with a pregnant 17 y/o. So unless you're voting along party lines this is all we have to really go on.
  22. EZ I/O is only for adult pts in cardiac arrest.
  23. You guys have got to be flipping kidding me. Everyone's favorite Republican President Regan first pushed nuclear disarmament with Russia which was continued by G.H.W. Bush and Clinton. Standing down ICBM's was begun under G.H.W. Bush and continued under Clinton. When Donald Rumsfeld was first selected by G.W. Bush as his Secretary of Defense he had two major goals. The first was restructuring the military to be able to respond quickly around the world to smaller conflicts and get away from cold war tactics and strategy. His second was to revamp the technology development arm of the military to cut bloated failing projects and refocus on technology based developments and force multipliers over brute strength weapons that had become the norm during the cold war. The only thing new here flushing the missile defense shield, a project that is so far behind schedule and been abandoned by so many people because the doesn't work. The entire thing is based on information gleaned from the patriot missile system. A system that wors so well Israel went out and built their own rather than rely on our freebies. Out tanks, helicopters, aircraft and navy are all good enough but even they knew the Patriot was a POS. So now I pose this, what has he said that will send us into a Mad Max like post-apocalyptic fantasy? I would like to hear an answer to LTNRFD's question from both sides. We can't ignore them and we can't kick down the door and take over every scumbag dictator under the sun.
  24. I'm vaguely familiar with the requirements for FDNY Lt and NYPD Sgt. and Lt promotions but was hoping someone who's been through them could proved a clearer example of the breadth of information that you have to learn to prepare for the exam. Thanks.
