  1. Bad news guys, if you can see the car he's all ready nailed you.
  2. Be very careful. Tasers are not NON-lethal. They are less lethal. This doesn't mean they shouldn't be readily available, but people need to be remember that Tasers are not harmless.
  3. DOH doesn't care if you have blue lights on the truck
  4. Get back to assessment. Start EMT's on the path to being clinicians and get them back to treating illnesses rather than symptoms. The only skill I'd like to see added is combi-tube or other like device for cardiac arrest. Endotracheal Intubation is a skill many 911 medics have a hard enough time staying proficient in. How could you expect EMT's to be able to keep their skills up? Besides Intubation may be on its way out in the pre hospital setting. There was a city that I can't remember the name of now that was looking at switching entirely to the King Airway and eliminating Intubation.
  5. So a device like a refrigerator??? I'm just breaking stones. Thanks.
  6. At one point Grumman made both the Ambulances for HHC and the Buses for transit. So teh city was buying "buses" for EMS.
  7. ckroll nailed it. Stress tests are great, but they are expensive and only catch the problem after the fact. An annual agility would go much farther towards the goal of improving overall health of ff's. It doesn't have to be as strenuous as the hiring agility but something as simple as a timed run or step mill w/ weighted vest would be more effective in forcing members to stay in better physical shape.
  8. CPR has been successfully performed on many cats and dogs. The ASPCA or Human society has even supplied a few area agencies with animal BVMs. Its pretty easy, hold the snout closed, straighten the neck, wrap your lips around the whole thing and blow. Should you however have to clear anything from the airway it was suggested to open the mouth and suck on the nose (that right there is absolutely my line) Compressions are done with the animal on its right side. Place your hands next to the elbow just behind the fore legs. Follow pediatric guidelines for compression depth and ratios. Allegedly there may have even been a successfully intubated dog in the Bronx after it was struck by a car. In NYC call PD and they will transport you to the Manhattan Animal Hospital, but bring some plastic saving fido of fluffy is not cheap.
  9. In NYS you were sentenced to death if the jury believes you are likely to commit the crimes you were convicted of. Since you cannot be punished for crimes you have yet to commit the death penalty in NYS is unconstitutional.
  10. You can't compare County PD to the fire brigade. While they may be a redundancy that could be replaced by state troopers they do cover a substantial amount of property and roadway as well as specialty units like aviation, K9, and SWAT. If I'm not mistaken county Haz-Mat and collapse rescue are both covered by volunteers.
  11. Seen a couple of those. Dumped 200 gallons of water into one before the water stopped boiling.
  12. How about this law is a wate of money. If you get clipped by a car while involved in extinguishment or extrication then you probably have two or three rigs, a cop car or two, and maybe even a buring vehicle the idiot behind the wheel failed to notice. How the hell is a vest going to make a difference. So how about those actively involved in traffic control, yes the vest improves their visibility, but is it any better than the light show going on behind them, the light in their hand, or the JFK international airport flair patter set up? We are stuck by drivers who are not paying attention, are asleep at the wheel, or are drunk. You could paint the entire crew in florecent green paint and guys will still get hit. Want to stop the accidents then you have to slow down the traffic. Shut down the road enough where you get a good 50 to 100 yard back up of cars you have your safety. Vests, blue lights, 6 road cones with their striping spec aren't going to change anything because they don't get at the problem.
  13. How much fire and how big is the house? If it were up to me and I didn't know exactly where I'm going or there isn't a truck doing a primary to tell me where to go the hose is staying dry until I get close and know where I'm going. Dept policy however is lines are charged outside in all structures.
  14. In the Bronx I was assigned to a roll over in White Plains.
  15. Blood in our area may never happen. Up state maybe as it spreads across the country. Hypothermic resucitation is clearly on its way. The research I've seen hasn't shown a benefit in ROSC however it did show the percent of discharges from hospital doubled. They were next looking to quantify meaningful recovery for further evaluation of results. NYC is currently working of a cooling protocol that will involve the rapid infusion of 1 Liter of cold saline and transport to a resucitation center that will continue the hypothermic therapy. There are however several hurdles that must be worked out first, but progress is being made.
  16. Since not all depts have members that can walk on water they have had to resort to other means to access the many ponds the dot their district. Thornwood went with suprisingly unorthodox option of boats.
  17. It was still approved by a Republican controlled house and senate. No one party can dodge this as both parties were in favor of it. Democrats were able to parade around as friend of the common man and Republicans were able to make bank for investment firms, mortgage brokers, etc. There was no big outcry about the potential dangers. Interest rates were incredibly low and the economy was growing. No one thought about the down side and now we're paying for it. Politicians are the problem, on both sides of the political spectrum. And now here we are entrusting them with 300 Billion Dollars to try and fix a mess that no one knows the solution to.
  18. Fannie and Freddie begged and pleaded for those changes, which were approved by a Republican controlled house and senate. Get you head out of your arse. Neither the Republicans nor Democrats caused this. They allowed it to happen which is where they failed us. The Republicans with their love of big business overlooked the obvious risks so investment banks and mortgage brokers could make a killing. As long as interest rates stayed low people would be able to maintain their payments but also remain under their mountains of debt. It would become a never ending revenue stream. The Democrats sold out so they could continue their friend of the common man BS and went after quick money rather than being responsible and doing what may have been best for the people rather than what the people thought they wanted. This isn't a partisan issue. People on all sides were screwed by our elected officials so they could take care of themselves. Self sacrifice is long gone from political offices. Now its all about IGM.
  19. The solution to pollution is dilution. 5 liters of blood in an adult, round that up to 2 gallons. If it goes down the drain, by the time it hits any waterway its been diluted many hundreds of times over. More likely you're talking about a few pints per patient.
  20. One problem when were these banks forced to make these loans. I see enabling, but it looks like corporate greed is the real problem.
  21. Since we've had some pretty good political discussion going on recently I figured this would be a good place to put up some legit facts about the candidates and their plans for the country. This isn't about their social life, religious affiliation, or party BS. Just their actual plans for the next 4 years. Please try and keep this info coming from independent sources and not just links to their campaign website. Science Debate 2008 posed 14 questions to Obama and McCain concerning science, technology and the environment. The candidates full answers are available at the link above. I've added a few highlights from the site. Climate Change and Energy Obama - Greenhouse gas emissions reduced to 80% below 1990 levels by 2050 through innovation incentives and cap and trade pollution control programs. He also wants to export green technology to developing countries to make it easier for developing countries to combat climate change. $150 Billion over 10 years for clean energy. Toughening building efficiency by 50% over 10 years and fuel efficiency 4% a year. 25% of electricity to come from renewable resources by 2025. McCain - Emissions cut to 2005 levels by 2012, 1990 levels by 2020 and 60% below 1990 levels by 2050. Incentives for business to change rather than penalties for not complying. 2 billion a year for 15 years to develop clean coal. $5,000 tax credit for every individual who buys a zero emissions vehicle. $300 million prize for "the development of a battery package that has the size, capacity, cost and power to leapfrog the commercially available plug-in hybrids or electric cars". 45 new nuclear reactors by 2030. Education Obama - Improvements through better training and pay for teachers. Improved preschool access and greater access to affordable higher education. McCain - Added focus on retraining displaced workers. Incentive money to high performing teachers and schools. Deffense Obama - Increased focus on technology and science. Double the funding for DoD research, renewing DARPA, and using this increased focus on research to decrease the cost of procurement. Improve our defense against cyber and bio attacks. Improve domestic production capacity. McCain - Increased research funding and expand the military to "ensure that the nation is capable of protecting the homeland, deterring potential military challenges, responding to any crisis that endangers American security, and prevailing in any conflict we are forced to fight." Genetic Research and Stem Cells Obama and McCain - Ensure the privacy of the individual from discrimination and maintain funding and strict oversight. Repeal the the stem cell research funding ban while continuing to investigate other sources of stem cells. Current standards that prohibit the growth of a fetus for tissue are to be maintained. There is more and much more detail and rhetoric in the candidates actual answers. this is just a quick summary to give you an idea where each politician is coming from.
  22. New England Journal of Medicine asked each candidate for their plans for Health Care and then got a response from someone of the opposite political ideology. http://content.nejm.org/misc/election2008.shtml
  23. what a tool. Guy builds a "green" home and celebrates by burning a few tons of wood. So much for his carbon footprint.
  24. It doesn't look like he could have gotten much closer without either parking on the grass or right next to the structure. Why take the risk when access is just as easily accomplished with ground ladders?
