  1. Good for the union. The didn't complain about the work, they complained about not getting paid for it.
  2. At the vast majority of incidents so long as those in command were doing their job and staying at the command post, its never hard to find. I never saw the need for those lights and truthfully they wind up blending into the background of all the other flashing lights.
  3. for crap sake, this isn't ALS vs BLS. The point is had the kid been that sick wouldn't they have been calling for ALS. Also as you pointed out they probably wouldn't have been on scene so long. Either way its a poorly researched article that includes very few clear facts and no insight as to what actually happened to this kid.
  4. When I was up there P-town was 18 to drive. I'm willing to bet he misspoke when he said 4 years. I've driven the chassis they had that truck mounted on. While I didn't have a 75' stick mounted to it, it was still a bit squirrely especially when pushing the weight limit. Rt 6 is a major rd speed limit 45 or 55 with pure sand shoulders. It could be as simple as he misjudged the turn was going a safe speed for the road but way to fast for the turn. Catch the sand and bingo you're rolling.
  5. Typical journalism. Light on details strong on emotion. The kid wasn't in arrest when the EMS crew arrived on scene. How did he present? They apparently didn't call for ALS until the kid arrested so what were they doing? What is clear is that there isn't enough information here to even speculate wether or not ALS would have made a difference, but god forbid a journalist let that stop them. All they mention is the "breathing tube", which could be effectively covered by a BVM and opa 90% of the time until said "breathing tube" arrives.
  6. One of the few places that really NEEDS a ladder. When things burn in down town P-town they burn big... http://www.capecodfd.com/PAGES%20Special/PTWharf1.htm Big exposure problems everywhere heavy fire loads and mostly heavy timber construction.
  7. Plus with the vast majority if houses containing both a ladder and an engine its not an issue until you start closing down engine co's for the night.
  8. I deal with these on a regular basis. First, if I have what appears to be an actual life threat (didn't come from a pay phone, call back is valid, etc) I'm not waiting for anyone to open the door. I've kicked in a wooden frame on a private house to find they left by taxi. Oops, should have answered when 911 called back. Once we were the second crew to force the door that day found the note the first crew left. Another time it was a chronic harassment issue where skells were calling to have a deaf woman's door kicked in. She learned and posted a message to us on her door to go to her neighbor for a key. I've had fire force plenty of doors and only twice has there been an actual medical emergency. Those calls made it absolutely worth while. Figure $200 per door 50 doors over 2 actual patients is 5k per patient. How many lives would the new Yonkers USAR truck have to save before it is that cost effective? As for how do you enter, the fastest and loudest way possible. If the pt is right in front of the door no matter how hard it pops open you aren't going to do much more then cause a bruise, maybe you catch their hand just right to break a finger. Still better than the alternative if they're so bad off they're unconscious in front of the door. I've read and heard of too many cases were guys have been nearly killed trying to find the less damaging way in. There's always a risk but banging down the front door is always better. How would mfkap's story ended had it been a ff coming through the window rather than a half dozen guys in the hall? I've also seen the hydra ram (ESU's preferred tool) do as much damage as the irons (Fire's choice). Also keep in mind its cheaper to replace a door then an entire door frame.
  9. TIc is a great tool, but still just another tool. Too often I see guys walking into or around structures with the TIC in front of their face like its attached to their mask. Read the smoke and if you're the officer on the line get a look around the structure a best you can while your guys are getting ready to enter. Now if you suspect a basement fire or even better know you have one go back to basics and sound the floor as you go. The tic should not fundamentally change the way you do things just make them a little more efficient.
  10. Any residents inside the structure and how are the injured brothers?
  11. Agencies absolutely can do it on their own since the state won't move on this till they're forced to. All you have to do is use either an established form or get your own form approved by I believe your local region. Skooter, thank you so much for posting that link. I've been trying to fight that one off but didn't have the research.
  12. Here we are in an era where hospitals are going paperless and networking, computers are making their way into the field, and patients are even carrying their entire medical profile on their key chain but here we are still writing out carbon copy PCR's. We need to get into scannable documentation or even better laptop based documentation. Want to know how many of your pt's diagnosed w/chest pain get aspirin, push a few buttons and you can find out down to the provider. The technology is out there. Its been proven to be effective in all fields and is even heading to the battlefield in the next couple of years.
  13. Moose, when in doubt hit up the google. http://www.kingsystems.com/PRODUCTS/Airway...79/Default.aspx Its a supraglottic airway device, comes in 3 versions. Reusable, disposable and a new disposable one with some added bells and whistles.
  14. True, but pick any neighborhood that the city might pull the engine on the overnights and you find a similar situation.
  15. The NYPD letter is older than the recent budget events. Lets also remember that those areas losing an engine are currently probably also down an ambulance or two on the overnight as all ready. Hunts Point being an excellent example. Take their engine away and after a B.S. diff breather from 11p to 6a the nearest help is 12 to 15 minutes away.
  16. Have any emt's or medics in Westchester fallen in the line of duty?

  18. Not for nothing but wasn't Trooper Ambrose killed by a drunk driver? What good are blue lights, red lights, white lights, or even olive green lights if the jackass behind the wheel is drunk. In study after study amber lights are found to be effective in all types of weather with conscious and alert drivers. The only devices shown to impact impaired drivers are rumble strips or chevrons, and chevrons an an example of implied affect. Drivers have been proven to steer to where they look. Flashing lights cause cause people to focus on the source. Chevrons draw a persons vision from high point to low point. ^ gets eyes to the side and v gets eyes to the middle.
  19. There are a few things that must be proven before you are found culpable in a legal action in civil court. One of them is that said violation was a contributing factor in the accident.
  20. Wait a sec, John Wayne is American. You're gonna have to go with Ned Kelly or maybe even Max Rockatansky time.
  21. A TL can can fail as well. So long as you're within operating limits why not? If you really want to be safe at least get a pair of eyes up in a TL to direct your streams.
  22. Bad old days came here fast this time. Bloomy is no doubt an astute businessman, but I can't help but see these cuts as being somewhat knee jerk. There are certainly benefits to getting ahead of the deficit but this whole thing is overkill.
  23. psst seth, you only got half of the del veccio names off the sign
  24. Thats as much of a risk as cell phone sparking fires at the fuel pump.
  25. what he said. That pack was easy to use and always came off cleanly. The few extra minutes it took to pack was worth it.
