  1. nycemt nailed it. Homeless create a huge headache when disaster strikes.
  2. Single axle also significantly increases stopping distance.
  3. As long as they aren't in the way, close is better.
  4. Everything I know about Scopes is based on conversations with more knowledgeable people. With that disclaimer out there, Baker introduced their new tower with a hydraulic time bomb that was purchased by many departments. Locally the victims were Pleasantville and Scarsdale(I think). These would catastrophically failed after so many hours of use. Seagrave took over and did their own redesign resulting in what is being sold now. I have no idea what is in store for the next change except that its wonderful, amazing, and perfect. Just like every other new thing.
  5. A lot of people not too thrilled with their Bakers either. Two in Westchester for sure.
  6. How is this any different than when people ask about an MVA or Fire they heard someone headed to? There was less info provided here about this individual than most calls that get discussed. Any time we discuss a structure fire where someone is injured or dies we have everything you need to find out the family from the comfort of your own home. MVA's we usually give the same info on pts involved that was given here. Yes it sucks when something like this happens to someone so young, but had this been the result of a fire we'd have her age, home address, hospital destination, and final outcome.
  7. Didn't Segrave recently redesign their Scope hydraulic systems. New system should either be out or coming soon.
  8. That is one hell of a place to have to perform an extrication. Nicely done. Anyone from Brewster with the details on what went well and what didn't?
  9. Damn, Pleasantville should have asked Yonkers for a ladder.
  10. Ultimately through consolidation you can streamline your response. When you call mutual aid, are you calling for manpower or vehicles? Unless its tankers or first mutual aid engine and ladder 90% of the time its all about manpower. You condense your manpower to two or three vehicles and then the rigs responding in from other communities will not only be full of members but they won't be parked two blocks away scattered amongst other unused rigs.
  11. On the up side this will stop civilians from injuring people because they think steaming radiator coolant and airbag lubricant is smoke. On the other hand, what about when there is really fire? Once the person actually catches fire can you put it out or remove them from the fire? This decision is ridiculous.
  12. Skooter did they add protective screen? FDNY had to glue Plexiglass over the screen to prevent damage to the 12's. The last demo I saw didn't have them but the rep was saying it would be built into the grey housing around the screen. They said it could continue monitoring through a 20' fall. It then took a trip out the 3rd floor window. Damn thing was still working.
  13. Are they laying off an officer or eliminating one position? Its a very big difference but not enough of a difference to trust the Journal news would get it right.
  14. Swing by your local supermarket tonight. People freak out like they're going to be snowed in for weeks. Blizzard of 96 was a pretty bad one and within 2 days life was pretty much back to normal. Ice storm in New England this year. Thousands still without power, but within a day all major roads were open and two days later just about everything else was open. Life goes on, yet people continue to over react.
  15. wikipedia is all info from internet users who either know or think they know the answer. Its not about the age of the list, but the accuracy. How many of those plants were announced but had to be scrapped due to financial problems? How many other plants have closed? I don't know the real answer to any of these questions. What I do know is that every car is either built, assembled or made from parts here there and everywhere. Volvo, Mazda, Saab, and for a few years Jaguar were cars made by American Automakers and depending on the model built overseas and shipped here. Then there's Chrysler. Partners since the 70's with Mitsubishi bought out by Daimler Benze in the 90's then sold out to a private firm a year or so ago with Benze retaining somewhere around 25% stake if I remember correctly. All though there was story a few months ago when the automakers were taking their high cost fuel beatings that Benze was trying to say the stock has almost no value and were trying to unload it at zero value. So again I ask, how much does it really matter which car you buy? The argument could be made that Nissan and Toyota have an growing market share and are actively expanding american production. Buying from them ensures more Americans get jobs. Buying from the "big 3" means the money keeps a few Americans employed and either helps to pay back the eventual auto bailout or the Japanese automakers who takeover the American automakers. I have a 2002 civic. I've paid for gas, oil, brakes, and tires. To top it all off, much less gas than most. Every company makes lemons and gems. In my experience and my family's, the Germans and Japanese cars have the better track record without exception.
  16. All new 12's have the upgraded screen. 15's step up to color screens. FDNY uses colormetric devices. They also have a stash of 12's with capnography and NiBP that they are starting to distribute, however its not enough for all units and zero for back-up. Instead they're scrambling to buy standalone capnography devices until they can either buy more 12's or the 15's become available. 15 is about the same size and may be a pound or 2 lighter.
  17. That list isn't the most accurate. Hell it still has Tarrytown still listed as open and the plant as of now is a flat concrete slab overlooking the Hudson. Even still there are a lot of US plants listed as closed or closing in the last 10 years and not too many opening up.
  18. Its a global economy at some point the money is going overseas. Build me the best product and I'll buy it. The auto makers made the same mistakes everyone running a pension system makes. As soon as the Pension starts to outperform its expected earning the company cuts their contributions and commits them somewhere else. The Pension system is not a revenue stream!! If it was 1998 you told your financial adviser you were going to stop you retirement contributions because the market was doing great he would call you an idiot and remind you that the market goes up and down and one of the best protections against market fluctuation is continuous investment. Instead governments and corporations alike don't know how to handle a surplus and spend like drunken sailors. Next on Patterson's chopping block is 20 and out pensions. Is the problem that they cost more now or is more likely that they over performed and were underfunded for the last 10 to 15 years.
  19. Maybe not as much in the spotlight, but these cases are usually kept alive by the investigating detectives. They take these personally and don't quit on them. I know of one case personally where while the original investigator is long since retired he still stays up on the case and still keeps in touch with us. And this wasn't a child abduction, just one of the hundreds of unsolved adult murders every year.
  20. I'm surprised seth especially with your back history. I did the math a while back and was doing a multi story cary down on average every other tour. Most aren't particularly big and I was lucky to working a bus with two guys who can carry. And this is an area dominated by elevators, unlike Harlem and Washington Heights. I would happily kick in my share to get a treaded stair chair. I don't want to be riding a desk in 10 years and the new vehicles and growing Americans aren't helping.
  21. I agree with DFD. His intentions are great, but I have to side with the Chief. Especially as the helmets starts to see some fire duty and becomes damaged.
  22. The same is true with every foreign and domestic auto maker. First, do you know who owns which brands anymore? After NAFTA American companies starting sending jobs to Canada and Mexico. To avoid the foreign stigma Honda, Nissan, and Toyota started building in the US. Want to help the economy with your car, buy the one you want and go to the local guy to get it fixed and maintained.
  23. I still have to rock out the 2 wheeled chairs. While its great being able to stuff my O2 bottle w/ bag and contents under the chair having to hunch over to roll my patients anywhere and carry them down the stairs will ruin my back. Bring on the treds.
  24. Come on now, Punctuation and spelling help a LOT. Because its the way we always did it isn't a reason its an excuse. Maybe their selection is the best selection. The question people are asking is why is it better to go all the way to Port Chester when other depts may be closer.
  25. As per the article, the box was x-rayed and inspected. I don't know anything about how they do their job, but its not like they arbitrarily decided this one's a fake. They will review the actions of individuals, review procedures and determine what went wrong. Maybe someone goofed or maybe this guy did a great job of concealing the contents of his device, hell, maybe it was a bit of both.
