It doesn't have to be SCBA. There are other devices like the last chance air filter. Every cop should all ready have a mask that they are trained and fit tested on every year to address terrorism threats. Adding another mask or better yet a mask that would accommodate both filters would be easy to fit into training. Capt. Nechis there is no doubt that the volunteer system has flaws and is in many cases broken. I don't see it being fixed anytime soon so in the short term I advocate protecting the people who will be put at risk. As an alternative, what should be done in the short term? Even if the state were to mandate consolidation and 24/7 firehouse staffing in the first session of this year we're still years away from any real change. What if next time none of the officers have any fire experience? Are they going to wait 10 minutes for help or are they going to go in? It seems the general consensus is these officers did the right thing in this situation.

For many years FDNY had their hands tied with fires. Half the city burned down over 20 years and in that time a lot changed. NYPD ESU picked up auto extrication because at times there were no truck companies nearby available to handle. The FDNY Marine 1 and 9 fire boats were designed to put big water on big fires. They were not fast enough for rescue. In the summer smaller faster boats are put into service and both Marine 1 and 9 both have smaller rescue boats in the water year round. There is a new generation of fire boat on the way that will give FDNY a bigger presence on the water, but the primary means of water rescue are still shore based (FDNY) and airborne (NYPD). Same thing happened with aviation. PD started the unit through the efforts of its members. By the time Fire got to looking for a bird PD made the case that they had everything covered. As for who is in control, Commissioner Kelly is a smart and political savvy individual. He has Bloomberg's ear and has been able to expand NYPD's sphere of influence. FDNY is stuck with Scoppetta, a career politician who's previous experience was running The Administration for Children's Services.

Chris if you do start hoisting, what is the risk of the wash pushing people off the wing?

Everything is supply and demand. From sex to drugs to government. Everyone wants sports. We live vicariously through their accomplishments. I have never set foot on the field at Yankee stadium, but damn it, WE lost last season and WE haven't had a real shot at the ring in years. As long as the market will support it salaries will grow. Civil servants are an expendable commodity. Monday night at 7pm millions of Americans are not looking for a firefighter or cop. The vast majority of renters do not have rental insurance. Its cheap and very generous with coverage, but most people don't get it because they're not the one who's place is going to get broken in to or burned up. Much like insurance until you need it you don't understand the true value of your civil servants.

Who here would be willing to give up a little on their current pension to protect the young? Maybe vesting after 10 or contributions for 20 years?

Its not just the flights over the Hudson or tappanzee. Its every flight in and out of the tristate. The busiest airspace in the country.

What would really be nice to see is DNC cover everything from the stage back and public funds cover the people. The parties, dinners, special events, all the self congratulatory junk should be paid for by the party. Public inauguration ceremony, parade, etc that the average citizen can partake in gets paid for by public funds. I've gotta stop huffing glue, these hallucinations are getting a little to out there.

NYC water means NYPD is in charge until it is clear that it is not a terrorism related event(That'll be determined once the media clears out) at that point command is handed over to FDNY until all life hazards are mitigated, and then in this case probably the coast guard for recovery.

Also remember this was a best case scenario. 150 passengers is relatively small commercial jet. What if it had been 350 passengers or maybe the airbus monster with a potential capacity of 800 passengers? If the conditions had been any worse or the landing any less perfect how long would that plane have stayed afloat? I know nothing about the safety features built in for this type of landing, but short a wing or an engine would it still float level? Does an airbus float better than a boeing? The wind current, and tide were heading out to sea at the time of this incident but what if it had been different? It definitely would have created more surface chop and the tide coming in with the wind pushing the plane down river could very easily have helped sink the plane faster. News reports have NYPD aviation divers pulling two from the water and they were on scene within 10 minutes of the plane being reported in the water. I'm pretty sure county doesn't have the luxury of divers on board and I'm not sure how comfortable Chris would be leaving the bird up there while he took a swim. Realistically how soon could Westchester get divers in the water just north of the Tappanzee Bridge (I figure thats about the middle of Westchester's portion) if this were to happen tomorrow?

Thats asking for trouble. Its hard as hell to be great at either one. Many break their butt just to be good at the one they choose to do. The time it takes to be good at all three is too much to ask of one person.

This isn't about turning cops into firefighters. They should not be ventilating, fighting the fire, or going to the floor above to search for extension. This is to assist in evacuation, not be making grabs from the fire apartment. The NAVY example is a perfect example. They have strict controls on how far they go and a specific task to do that does not push them past the limited protection their equipment provides. New Ro is not a place where this would be useful. There is plenty for PD to do before the FD arrives. Same for Yonkers, New Ro, Peekskill, Pelham, Eastchester, etc. This an issue unique to communities covered by volunteer FDs where police will be spending a large amount of time on scene awaiting firefighters. In the shooting scenario, that'd be like trying to tackle involved room with a can. Flat out stupid without all the right equipment and training. What if you're in a mall or building where a shooting is occurring on the floor above? Should the firefighter who happens to be there go stand by an extinguisher or guide as many people as possible to the nearest exit? Once again I am not advocating police trying to be firefighters. However 3 officers went to the hospital all ready and I don't think anyone here would second guess what they did. To the Mt. Kisco guys, do you think the civilians at that fire could have survived 10 more minutes in that fire? Seeing as one was later transfered to WMC for respiratory burns I'm going to guess no. All members of emergency services are trained to operate up to the limits of their protective equipment. There are lines out there that you approach but do not cross. Should we not give EMS personnel vests for fear they might run into active shootings? At work I have an apr and suit that provides enough protection where I can enter an IDLH environment to effect rescue or operate safely in the warm zone. This doesn't mean I'm to be going into fires. No matter what you do someone is going to exceed the limits of their protection and thats not reason enough to not provide members with protection that can save them.

I HATE multi million dollar civil suits. They're usually frivolous and 9 times out 10 they're more about hurt feelings and quick paydays than they are about measurable losses. If for nothing other than their arrogance and complete disrespect for steve and all of his service I hope we soaks them for every penny.

I love how this is now about Republicans vs Democrats when the sitting Republican President issued the order for the incoming Democratic President-Elect. This couldn't be anymore bi-partisan and we've turned it into Bush vs Obama. Sage, that 1.4 Billion the secret service gets has to cover every American dignitary who travels abroad, every head of state that visits this country, former presidents for 10 years, the sitting president VP and their family, presidential candidates, and still perform investigation and enforcement for the treasury dept. What should they cut from their budget to cover the inauguration?

From Throggs neck, Senior Care is just over on Zerega. Definitely one of the better transport agencies. A lot of FDNY medics and EMT's work there.

This would be a new tier. Anyone on the job now would still be 20 and out, vested after 5, etc. I agree with vested after 10. I can even swallow paying in longer. adding both 55 y/o and 25 years is ridiculous. Had the city and state properly funded the pension system when the economy was booming they wouldn't be in this position. For us to pay for their mismanagement is criminal.
-
An important distinction to make is this was a one time thing. They didn't give up one day a year. For this to happen again it would have to go before the members. At least this way they have some measure of control.

NYC got a huge chunk of money for security at the RNC and every year the city gets money for the UN and dignitary protection. On top of that this is a massive event unlike anything seen in DC before. They simply do not have the infrastructure to handle it.
-
This whole thing is done for the people. They aren't spending all this money to make Obama feel better about himself, or to add to the grandeur of office. The lion share of this cash is being spent to protect the citizens who are flooding DC to see this event.

Narcotics are carried on our persons, but our restock is in lock boxes at the station. Its these restock and securement lockers where the heat was an issue.

Study the text book. The test is region neutral. When you take it, relax. Just because you get a few questions in a row on one subject or you feel the test is heavy on a subject it doesn't mean you're not doing well. Between tester questions and adaptive scoring you just have to take it one question at a time and don't defeat yourself.

There is no great secret to turning a semi to a full auto. It is easy. The perps gun was semi auto. These guns are designed for military operations where full auto or burst fire is desired. 20 minutes online and just about anyone can return their gun to its designed capability. Anyone who cleans their own gun and has any mechanical ability can figure it out with no help. The older the gun the easier it is. In a military AK, AR-15, SA-80, etc there is switch that activates or deactivates a second sear that catches the bolt before it reaches the trigger sear. The civilian version has the second sear and no switch. Smart people disassemble the gun and remove the sear and spring so when appropriate they can return the gun to semi auto. Those less gifted cut the spring and tie to solder the sear in place. CPAGE is right, you are going to want to file down the firing pin. A finer pin is less likely to misfire in full auto. Cheap ammo plus fat pin can get your fail rate over 50%.

easy. First off, the difference between a rifle and an assault rifle are the accessories. Collapsable stock, pistol grip, and high capacity magazine turns your run of the mill Bushmaster AR-15 into an assault rifle or in this case your imitation AK-47. You can go to your local gun shop and pick one up tomorrow.
