  1. Do any of these agencies run solo medics? I haven't seen a set-up yet that fits everything needed for ALS on one bike.
  2. Had the accident occurred after an AFA or building inspection would they be pushing to stop sending trucks out on those also? BS article from a paper that seems to have it out for the BFD. I appreciate the need for critical analysis of the dept, but this paper always seems to attack the dept.
  3. Anyone carry skeds? A bit cumbersome, but lighter than a stokes and especially on stairs can be a lot easier than bumping that bottle along.
  4. Tomahawk cruise missile on 95 in the Bronx wins, even if it was just a dummy.
  5. Typical 1 to 2 story residential I agree, you don't need a truck. Generally on a surround and drown you're losing the structure. You also have pretty decent access to the entire structure from exterior windows. There is however the school of thought where no one sets foot on wood frame residential roof unless they're tied to an aerial. There is also the argument that you don't need vertical ventilation in these structures, that smart horizontal ventilation is as effective and less dangerous. I've heard convincing arguments for all. What is clear especially with newer construction these roofs don't hold up to fire. So I guess go with what works for you so long as you CYA.
  6. Pleasantville. Oil burner that ignited some combustible material that was a little too close. All but first due engine returned prior to their arrival.
  7. Why, he was released by Bush's system and Bush's people. That would imply the old way was not working and maybe Obama is on to something. Or maybe this is war against religious idealism. A war that has been going on since the Crusades. This battle and its combatants are not going away.
  8. Freight trains make excellent fire apparatus chassis.
  9. According to Republican Jim Bunning of Kentucky Geithner has been "involved in just about every flawed bailout action of the Bush administration." I don't think he's a good pick either, but he was chosen for a reason. We'll see how it plays out.
  10. In EMS I've seen people react differently to me based upon my hair, but the reactions last for seconds. As soon as you open your mouth and make eye contact people figure out what you're about. Body language and intent are so much more important that what is or isn't on your head. But then again when the police are involved some people are just looking for an excuse to complain.
  11. yeah, in the presence of oxygen facial hair and plastic tubing becomes very flammable, but how many of those burns resulted in baffling injuries. My point remains, oxygen doesn't burn it just helps other things burn faster.
  12. I think the greatest fire risk is going to to be to the people on the ground, but its probably less of a risk than tar off a roof. This material is fairly thin and with the perforations there isn't a whole lot of mass to it. I don't see it sustaining a flame long enough for it to commute the fire to the floor or floors above. Its also very easy to cut or tear. Shatter the glass, make a hole, and you should be able to tear out a nice big sheet of broken glass. A similar product thats more common is the vinyl car wraps. Same thing except smaller holes on the cars (I don't remember if its thicker or the same on the cars).
  13. As ALS pointed out, who among us has not made the mistake of having a drink or two too many before getting behind the wheel? I know it has certainly happened to me where I got home and realized I shouldn't have driven. Yes there is a difference between having a drink too many at diner and stealing a vehicle from your VAC but his crime was as severe as some are making this out to be. Seth, if you want to keep this thread to pertinent info then why the rant about you recording conversations about someone badmouthing you? Who cares? People talk and most talk feces. You can misdemeanor to your hearts content and not lose your card. Catch the right felony and you'll be all right too. Violent crimes and drug distribution offenses are the only automatic exclusions I'm aware of and I'm sure someone somewhere has gotten around those. He screwed up and will pay a penalty and he'll be ousted from SHVAC. Luckily the only damage is too an old caprice. Maybe he learns from this and it motivates him to change or maybe he doesn't, but either way he's not first one to screw up and certainly will not be the last. Professionals and volleys abuse drugs and alcohol. For every story of one side I'm sure you can find one on the other.
  14. Closing Gitmo is a great pr move. No one likes it. You could turn it into the club med of prisons and it will still carry a certain stigma. He's not just dumping these people out into the world. They will be transfered and the trials will be resumed. In celebration of all the racial harmony now that Obama "our savior" is in office I dug up my favorite SNL clip of all time. http://www.hulu.com/watch/1477/saturday-ni...ord-association
  15. I'm not making excuses. Thats the reality of the situation. If he can't get the legislation he wants passed then thats his fault. If his programs fail, thats his fault. For the next 4 years if it doesn't get done then he doesn't get re-elected, unless of course the Republican's do like the Democrats did 4 years ago and lob a softball to the opposition. POTUS goes in the Limo. He has his own Secret Service medic with a full compliment of equipment.
  16. Tires in various forms have been approved as a building material. Either chipped or whole. Usually as part of thick heat absorbing walls. When used properly the rubber is covered in masonry giving any occupants plenty of time to evacuate and hopefully enough time for extinguishment before the tires are exposed to fire and the whole structure lost. I don't think foam would work well on vertical surfaces. You also have the issue of the steel bands within the tires. They become built in re-ignition points. Kind of like a zippo lighter.
  17. spontaneous human combustion doesn't occur and oxygen doesn't burn. Seeing as how he was still alive when they found him I'm going to go with Stepjam and bet he was burned at location A and found at location B. I think just about everyone here has heard of the late great Richard Pryor. After setting himself on fire he ran for blocks until being tackled by police.
  18. Why not use a digital recorder. If the TV can handle the ride a digital recorder certainly will. Should also take up less space.
  19. I voted for Obama and I'm happy to see him in office, but all of these expectations are setting up for some extremely disappointed people. He is just the President, a man. He is not the savior and he is not the solution to everything that ails this country. We are at war, the economy is in the tank, the national debt is growing like wildfire, terrorism is an ever present threat that will likely never go away, healthcare continues to cost more and do less, social security is still f-ed, and our energy consumption and production has come to crossroad. Have I missed anything??? There are a lot of things that have to go right on a lot of different levels for things to improve and only a couple of things have to get screwed up to ruin it all. Kind of like landing a plane in the Hudson.
  20. Secret service doesn't run with an ambulance that I'm aware of. That does look a lot like a tactical assault support vehicle that I saw in DC last year.
  21. Brooklyn. Captain's SCBA straps became caught up in bicycle in the hallway.
  22. Its amazing how different two worlds can be. I've started IV's with a pen light in my teeth and intubated by the light of a Fire Lt's box light. All though, I have a great spot light in the truck that when it works does a great job waking snoozing bosses.
  23. You have thousands of gallons of Jet Fuel thats sitting in a submerged plane tied to seawall in the hudson. Not exactly an ideal storage situation. Then they're going to sling it and lift it onto a barge, again not quite an ideal situation. Something goes wrong they're going to need a lot of foam fast.
  24. Just about any company will jump at a medic who just wants transports.
  25. As a new jack you will never cap out on OT and just how negotiable are your wages? Starting EMTs now make about $15.75/hr and after 5 years $23.50/hr. Add to that meal money and night differential. I pay 0 for medical, dental, or vision. Pension at 25 hopefully soon to be 20 years. Access to an extremely cheap and highly rated 401K/457. Civil service protection and a strong union presence. Line of duty injury and death benefits. Excellent training including hazmat operations for all members with advanced training to technician as well as an advanced rescue medic program available. Oh yeah I almost forgot, no transports all 911. If you're only going to do EMS for a year or so then its not worth it. If you're doing it while you're taking civil service exams and could be at it for a couple of years or might consider making it a career then its a no brainer.
