  1. We've got it easy, with few exceptions all hydrants are all the same style and a standard color scheme. However if someone decided to add one that matched the system I doubt anyone would notice before hooking up. The distribution of hydrants is too random.
  2. Its good to see some guys have been able to turn this into some humor. I am all for using photos to critique and ask questions but this is ridiculous. This isn't a team forcing entry or bailing off a roof without their equipment. Its guys BSing in front of a structure with a light smoke condition. On top of that we have an explanation from someone there that these photos are from after knockdown. Who cares how they're wearing their equipment outside and while its tragic that a poor brother must suffer the indignity of using a surplus radar dome for a helmet, I think he's safe for now without being on air and not wearing a helmet outside the structure.
  3. Most "pork" is more about the appropriateness of the item rather than the need for the item. The recent Democrat stimulus package is an excellent example. Many items added that while important, and not necessary for the purpose of the bill. Firefighter training funding is pork as soon as its added to a healthcare or economic stimulus package.
  4. In the whole mess that is NYC, the one group I really can't fault is the fire dispatchers. I'm sure there are exceptions, but as a rule they have their poop together. I'm sure if it was looked into further you would find there was something outside the dispatcher's control that had the assignments so screwed on that job. I've spent a lot of time chasing jobs on the spaghetti pile that is 95, the Hutch, and Bruckner interchange and when in doubt I just followed FD since you guys usually had better info. Sadly the greatest problem is GIGO, and until they install truly integrated software no one will know what the other is doing if we're in the same room or across the city. PD still has first crack at all jobs, fire and ems have to e-mail each other, and no one can see what other has until its sent over. We're one of 2 cities attacked by foreign terrorists, and we still haven't addressed the greatest weaknesses found in every drill and every after incident report. Communication!!
  5. Yeah, the billion dollar boondoggle that is the FDOC looks great. Not actually a dispatch center, as Fire dispatchers are stuck using antiquated equipment in old facilities and EMS is sequestered away in 11 metrotech running old computers in a cramped office. If you watch the EMS video when Magoo is giving his little speech they're watching TV on the screen behind him. After spending billions on their operations center and their unified dispatch so far it is used to stream video and track MOS injuries. Meanwhile we're all using antiquated dispatch software the inhibits communication and prevents the closest and correct unit from always being assigned to jobs.
  6. You guys really don't get it. This is what people look forward to about lists. They want to see what the list maker thought and then they agree or more likely disagree. Its the same with all the greatest band, album, car, president, gun, etc lists that people come up with. If people didn't care about the list no one would talk about it. Enjoy the attention the thread is getting, and dare I say come on out and defend the selections. Since you guys went the extra mile and actually interviewed people from the incident you have an insight that most the people here don't have. Share that info. The greatest list I've read is Burt Sugar's "Boxing's Greatest Fighters". When he published it, he caught a lot of attention because Marciano didn't make the top 10 and Ali wasn't even top 5 amongst other extremely unconventional rankings. His list is great because of the detail in which he defends each position and leaves the reader debating the book in their head. QTIP and share the knowledge you guys have.
  7. http://www.hbo.com/events/takingchance/ In 2004, Lt. Col. Michael Strobl volunteered to escort home the body of a 19-year-old Marine killed in Iraq. It would prove to be a life-altering experience. Kevin Bacon stars as Strobl in this profoundly moving HBO Films drama that looks at the military rituals for honoring its war dead from the perspective of one fallen soldier named Chance Phelps. Strobl never knew Phelps before taking the assignment, but as he journeys across America, he discovers the great diligence and dignity in how the military handle such dark duties--and comes to grips with his own issues of guilt when he meets Chance's gracious family and friends. 8. No savings there, since the houses are staying open as the other company is still open. On these overnights they're just closing 1 of 2 companies. For now.
  9. Are you for real? Any "progress" made over there is because the system lives on the verge of collapse. Wait times for an ambulance are regularly over 30 minutes, crews over worked, and hospitals are flooded.
  10. Why not? There is no hands on part to EMD is there?
  11. The article sounds like they're pissed the houses are still open. Like they want houses closed.
  12. This happens every day. Everything from Ponzi scheme operators to murders to petty criminals. Defense attorneys are there to protect the accused. Remember, not everyone taken to court is guilty. Police and prosecutors are not immune to mistakes. The jury did what they though is right. The average american is not that bright and not well educated. If its not on TV we don't know about it. The judge has nothing to do with deciding guilt or innocence. Get out and experience the world before you decide to give up on society. If you think the courts are so screwed up, go and sit in on some trials. Watch a prosecutor try pin a paper thin case on someone and then watch a jury toss a easy conviction because it didn't happen like it does on CSI.
  13. nycemt, if it makes you feel better ignorant people make up the majority everywhere. The Bronx does not have some magical border that keeps all the idiots within the borough. However, these 12 people represent you and your neighbors, so technically if you agree that these 12 are idiots then you agree that the Bronx is chock full of idiots and therefore people can continue to paint the entire borough as such.
  14. Fire Units Eng 73, 71 Lad 42, 55 Sqd 41 and others EMS Units BLS 26I ALS 26Y Batt 55, DC2 Multiple 40pct units. At approximately 1100hrs a firefighter, while walking roof of 3 story private dwelling, fell through a covered air shaft. The firefighter became wedged in seated position at the bottom of the shaft a few feet shy of striking the ground. The firefighter was Alert and Oriented with no loss of consciousness and all neuro intact. Due to the difficult location, position of the firefighter, and threat of injury extrication took a while but was accomplished in under 20 minutes. 15 minutes later the firefighter arrived at Lincoln Hospital in stable condition. No one rushed and everything proceeded calmly and efficiently. Nice job by everyone involved and hopefully he'll be back on the rig sooner than later.
  15. http://www.nydailynews.com/news/2009/02/12...racist_fdn.html I am so angry right now. If any case should be fought to the last dollar, this is one. Not a penny should be payed and not a word of apology or guilt.
  16. Racisim is absolutely a problem in the country and I can guarantee you 100% that there are racists all over the FDNY. But guess what, they aren't all white males. Asian, Black, White, Latin, we've all got racists and some of them even post youtube videos. Thats not the issue. The issue is if FDNY is an inherently racist organization and if actions motivated by race caused or contributed to FF Sears. Since every probie takes the same exact test every week, the only way minorities are specifically affected is if they are inherently less physically capable than white candidates. I all ready covered the treatment he got, and it was better than care the mayor himself would get if he dropped in his living room. For such a racist organization there were an awful lot of white faces framed out in blue at a funeral for someone none of them knew.
  17. Do something that winds up being directly contributing to the death or two people and get away with, how would you leave the courtroom? Thats about what I would expect.
  18. Thats a fair question, seeing as how the paper did no investigation on their own outside of asking the FD for comment. The recruits were told not to help because the instructors have a system in place to provide care. CPR was started and the defib placed by the instructors. If there's any doubt, after every arrest the data chip from every defib used is downloaded. Everything from the last time the defib was checked to any rhythms detected is recorded and downloaded. After it happened all anyone talked about was how well everything went despite the tragic result. CPR was in progress, ALS was on scene quickly and they were on their way to the hospital in minutes. There were entirely too many people there for something like withholding care to go undiscovered for so long.
  19. Anomalyemt, I'm sorry to see you guys leaving Castle Hill. Great people on 3L and mostly excellent medics on 3V. I haven't seen the orders, but rumor mill says FDNY is picking up 2 Mary Immaculate and 1 St Johns ALS, one unknown BLS, and relocating one ALS into the area. When Westchester Square closes an slightly less reliable rumor mill has 20W becoming 03V and if transcare wants to, they can park another ALS a 1/2 mile from 20X. Bloomy made it clear from the beginning that none of his cuts were set in stone. Threaten to cut cops or firefighters people groan and the city council cries. Threaten 15,000 teachers and housewives, yuppies, and the middle class start calling their senator. Once the state and fed send cash, that everyone knew from the beginning was coming, the teaching cuts get scaled back. Much of the areas being picked up have higher insurance percentages so the dept may be able to spin that into making it 18 cut tours.
  20. They'd get the same rf exposure if it were across town and they'd be - 1 generator and 15k a year. I don't think thats a great trade off.
  21. How about we hold people responsible for the most base animal reflex. Self preservation. Before crossing the street, look both ways at ALL crossings since drivers don't always go with the flow of traffic. Once you've begun to cross keep on looking because cars may continue to move. We were all taught this very clearly as children. Look left, look right, look left again. Cross on the green, not in between. Don't cross mid-block, only at the corners. Its embarrassing that we have to spend so much time and money on protecting stupid. Personally I cross where ever I happen to be, no matter what the light says, but that's because I'm watching the cars and I'm going to move my rear when I have to to maintain my ability to live. If you step blindly into a crosswalk because some light with cute little stick figure says you can you deserve what ever comes your way. Step out between parked cars and get popped by a bus, its not the bus drivers fault. Didn't hear the fire truck/police car/ambulance because you were rocking out to your ipod, then I hope you really enjoyed that last song.
  22. There are absolutely people in California prisons who don't need to be there. 3rd strike offenders who have never committed a violent crime, people in on cow manure possession charges, and the precious few who actually learn from being locked up. I don't care how liberal you are, but there is no way a state can release 1/3rd of their prison population and not suffer a surge in crime. Cut cops on top of this and these people are in for some serious guano.
  23. Cherry bombs. The dowel with the nail in the top, bigger dowel works much better. Looked like he was using an old broom handle, something a little smaller than a closet rod fits well in most jams.
  24. Part of Bloomy's budget requires the expediting of people on Light or Limited duty to retirement. I can't wait to see him use that 3/4's jump to poo on the unions again.
  25. And with the hospital closures, the ambulances turning out are lost as well. FDNY is asking for all paramedics interested in a transfer to queens to sign up now. I'm assuming they're going to grab up as much ALS as they can and give up the remaining ALS and all BLS to the voluntaries.
