  1. Sorry, but thats simply just not true. I've done jobs with these added units and seen transport crews lose their poo when flagged or when a job turns south. The voluntary agencies that are recognize for the ability to field good units provide additional in house training to their members before sending them into the street. Ambulances are a drain on hospital resources. Their attraction is in bringing the critically sick and injured back to the home hospital. Its reaching the point where the hospital destination of the sickest patients is the closest appropriate and not up to the patient or provider so the benefit of running an ambulance is that much less. Why else when St. Vinny's Midtown closed did they stop running those units? No hospital to bring the patients to means no benefit to running units.
  2. Jimmy, you have your terms screwed up. I think you're trying to ask about capital murder. All murders are Felonies. When NYS reenacted the death penalty I'm not %100 as to the requirements to make someone eligible for death, but it was struck down by the courts because of a requirement that the perp be at risk for killing again if they were ever released. In NYS no matter who, how, or why someone is killed they aren't getting the needle.
  3. Truckies putting in some work... and its not just overhaul. 1st 2nd 3rd 4th
  4. I'm in a similar boat. After a series of SNAFUs I'm finally guaranteed a spot in a class (#14 on the list). I deferred to the next class so I could finish my nearly completed paramedic training and they stop hiring. I'm quickly running out of options in my last year of eligibility. Its not fair to change the rules because of the economy. You extend this list and delay the next one and you've probably screwed just as many people. Since wither way someone loses its only fair to go by the established rules.
  5. It seems like without a central organizing authority the majority are benefiting on the backs of a few. The volunteers cannot contribute the way the paid depts can and Yonkers has made a commitment to special ops far and above most agencies. Without a central pooling of funds and resources its not going to work.
  6. Who needs a hard to store $600 thing when you've got an engine co. every few blocks?
  7. ckroll and NWFD, those are excellent examples of when to call for the bird. What matters is what you did when you realized the flight was not necessary.
  8. Didn't Yonkers have a team a while back? I use to see someone practicing at Yonkers Raceway, thought it was YFD. There are worse wastes of money that many of these depts partake in. So long as its funded as its own line item in the budget, then the commissioners at least doing their job and being transparent with their spending.
  9. In nearly everything I've read etomidate is universally a better induction agent than benzos, ketamine, and nitrous. While RSI does provide better success rates, I haven't seen anything that makes etomidate only dangerous. Mostly the percentages I've seen are mid to high 90's for RSI and mid 80's to 90 for etomidate only. While not an ideal trade off, depresed cortisol production vs paralysis is a fair deal in a service as large as FDNY or a quieter agency with only a couple of intubations per medic.
  10. Now this I would call distressing. CPAP is great, and decreases intubation rates and hospital stays. I haven't seen anything where it makes a major impact on fatalities. ETT drug administration results in a zero save rate in cardiac arrest. A quick comment about using etomidate. Why not use etomidate in the presence of trismus? I've heard of it causing trismus, but haven't seen anything in the last 10 years telling you not to use etomidate in the presence of trismus. If your agency does not use paralytics and the trismus is not as a result of an injury to the cranial nerve there is a reasonable chance that the etomidate will facilitate an otherwise impossible intubation.
  11. How is it that everyone agrees on the times and conditions when we should be calling for a bird, yet every couple of months we wind up with another one of these threads. Its not the same guy calling for a bird each time. There have got to be some members who either know why the bird was called or believe they should be called more frequently. Lets hear from you. If you don't want to face some of the stronger opinionated members of this board, PM me the details or your reasoning and I'll take up the cause. Otherwise, there's nothing to learn here since without debate nothing changes.
  12. thats the Bronx Fire Patrol. From what I've been told a couple of former guys from Aviation got some money from a few churches and other groups to create whatever it is they are. As far as I know they are disaster assistance volunteer agency, tied into the red cross. If thats true they shouldn't have blue lights and shouldn't be anywhere without the red cross.
  13. Remember, the dollar amount at the bottom of the bid is not the entire bid. Certain specifications have to be met, especially when a community is going to reject the lower bid in favor of a higher bid.
  14. Great drill. A lot of problems were identified and hopefully some serious good will come out of it.
  15. plenty of maneuverability. The impeller is able to draw in water to be forced out the jets allowing for near standstill turning.
  16. If you're talking a leave of absence from the job, FDNY considers you a civilian and you have the same rights as any civilian. You're effectively resigning from the job for that period of time.
  17. It happens all the time. While thats a particularly brutal crime, I've worked with a convicted felon in the city and have seen plenty of people have to submit to regular piss tests because of the stip they were hired on. It happens in the military, pd, fire, and ems.
  18. The majority of the injuries are rarely serious. Most common injuries we see are shoulder and knee sprains/strains, eye injuries, and lastly burns to the ears, neck, knees and wrists. The majority of members are back quickly, but many of these are potentially serious. With any injury you have to get it taken care of then. Waiting can potentially make proving the cause of debilitating injury harder at times.
  19. How far did he fall? What was the extent of his injuries?
  20. Maintenance worker made a mistake, city pays. Firefighter drops a hook on the car, city pays. Window knocked out by firefighter, debris shot out by water stream, facade falls off building, etc are all expected risks in the course of firefighting that are the responsibility of the person who is at fault for the fire. Same for the people with the smoke and water damage. The dept isn't liable, but the person who caused the fire can be sued in civil court.
  21. WAS, what if it wasn't a window knocked out by firefighters but bricks falling off the building as a result of fire damage? I see the same party being responsible in either case and I'm pretty sure the property owner is safe since its a result of arson.
  22. ckroll, I take serious offense to your last post. I am not nor have I ever been a clown. Just because I have size 16 shoes has absolutely no bearing on my ability as a provider. Other wise, great post.
  23. Sorry, my job is to look out for myself and my family. Its the city's job to provide adequate staffing. I'll pass the hat to help affected brothers and anything else I can do, but pay cuts or zeros now don't get restored or made up for later. Hiring on the other hand does happen when things improve.
  24. Thats an interesting scenario. If a vehicle strikes a parked car during operation, then it is operator error and the city is liable. In this case I think she is SOL. It sucks, but if the arsonist had set her car on fire she'd be in the same place. Had a cardiac arrest in a home, guy let someone from his methadone clinic crash at his place. Guy arrested and we made a mess out of his place. It wasn't intentional but things we had to do to get him out and the damage done inside was expensive. I was recently subpoenaed on it and he lost the case. You feel for these people, but life sucks sometimes.
  25. If you don't mind crossing the East River there are several Brooklyn and Queens Hospitals that hold fairly frequent physician led CME that a few Westchester medics I know use. Mamomidies, I can remember off the top of my head others I'd have to look up.
