  1. few fatal fires don't have some sort of easily preventable human component to them. Smoke detectors, delayed notification of FD, illegal locks, over loaded extension cords, etc. This doesn't excuse the city from taking a functioning system with a few problems and making it worse.

  3. Correct, unless the budget gap is filled. You will have to request new plates and pay all the associated fees Its not unusual to issue new plates, however to force everyone to convert is. In years past they would replace old tags as people got new ones. This time they're attempting to force everyone to get new plates when they renew or register over the next 2 years.
  4. The new plates are coming and they will cost more than in years past. What is at issue is if we will be mandated to replace our old plates with the new ones starting in April. Assuming the budget hole gets filled as you request new plates you will be getting the new design. I know with classic cars if you can find a real NYS plate from the same production year you can register the car with those old plates. I don't know if it would work with newer cars.
  5. NYC was the #1 target before 9/11, after 9/11, and will still be the number 1 target tomorrow. Terror trial or no terror trial we're the target. All that changes which target in NYC is top. Can we at least expect the US to not be hypocrites. In 1995 an American, Lori Berenson, was arrested in Peru and charged with leading a local militant group the country had identified as terrorists. In Peru anyone accused of actively engaging in or supporting terrorism is tried in a military tribunal. Appropriately enough the US State Dept demanded Peru cease and she be tried in open court according to established international treaties. She was convicted of treason and leading a terrorist cell. She was convicted and sentenced to life in prison. After years of continued pressure by both the Clinton and Bush administrations she was granted a civil trial where sentence was reduced to 20 years after the court found various flaws in the original prosecution. I believe she did what she was eventually convicted of in civil court. Lets face it, not all Americans are good people. We have no cleared example right now than Hasan. However there are Americans all over the world who could easily become innocent victims of an over zealous government without the protection of the same international treaties were looking to violate.
  6. Goose I'm sorry to hear about your loss, but don't for a second assume my views are coming from some ACLU loving bed wetting liberal with no connection to that day. Personally I'm disgusted at how long this has taken. Military or civilian courts so long as they receive an adequate defense I could give a crap. Why do I care they get an adequate defense, because I'm sick of hearing about them and their plight. I want them buried in a hole until the end of their life at the tip of a needle or however it comes. I don't want an appellate judge with an agenda to give them a second chance. I cannot indulge in a fantasy of dreams and desires where the animals who are responsible for any American death are caught, proven guilty, and quickly removed from this Earth. The reality is, its been 6 years since Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was captured and we are no closer to ending this than were that day. The Nazis never made war on American soil. Embassy bombers, the first WTC bombers, and terror plotters are among the nearly 200 who have all been successfully tried in Federal courts. These animals are guilty and American Civil Rights will not prevent them from being punished.
  7. Don't forget, the officer was doing 40 and the bus was doing what, 30? Thats one hell of an impact.
  8. After 6 years, 5 of which were under a Republican administration the military courts were not working. NYC Federal courts have proven track record convicting the terrorists responsible for the first WTC attack, embassy bombings and the millennium plotters. We finally have some closure. As far as the efficiency of military courts, no executions since the 60's even though they have had men on death row since the 80's. Good luvk clearing that log jam to get to these guys.
  9. Its the whole if its not my idea its a bad idea mindset. Clearly the unions were after it, so why not get a little more from them for it.
  10. Completely stole my post. No doughnut!
  11. EMSer, the vaccines are not exactly the same, but production methods are. First a seed virus is created. There are two methods that I am aware of that are commonly used to create these seed viruses. One where an isolated flu strain is combined with another virus in an egg where the two combine DNA. The second involves scientists identifying, then engineering the surface proteins and adding them to a stock vaccine. These seed viruses are then distributed to the vaccine manufacturers where they are added to millions of eggs to produce the actual vaccine. The link between the vaccine and guillain barre are correlational and an actual cause has yet to be identified. Since 1978 there have been seasonal vaccines that contained other H1N1 strains with no increase in reports of guillain barre. Anyone exposed in 1976 or who received a seasonal vaccine containing an H1N1 variant may be immune because while the strains are not identical they are similar enough where the current H1N1 strain could stimulate a response.
  12. may have something to do with state bid. Pleasantville switched to white because the available red was pretty ugly.
  13. Its made the same way the seasonal vaccine is. If you believe in the safety of one you can have faith in the safety of the other.
  14. More and brighter lights have never been shown to decrease accidents. In fact the large number of bright lights at accident scenes is thought to be responsible for many additional accidents. The only argument for brighter lights is the increased visibility distance. Only catch is incandescent and halogen lighting is visible well outside the reaction range of an attentive driver. Rolling light shows do nothing to alter the fact that drivers are not paying attention.
  15. Absolutely. This isn't a knock against Dover. These things are cheap structures with zero thought towards fire protection.
  16. Unless the fire breaks out IFO a Dover engine, they're not going to get ahead of a trailer fire. I went to school in Plattsburgh and got to do some drills with the city firefighters. Rescue involved going through the wall because trailer fires only stop when the trailer ends. Not to nitpick, but if there's nothing left other than structural members, its not a good stop. I have yet to see a trailer fire that resulted in a stop.
  17. Im not sure how much they'll be hiring in the coming years as they're looking to close companies, but they're establishing another list. http://agency.governmentjobs.com/philadelphia/default.cfm?action=viewjob&JobID=177629&hit_count=Yes
  18. Did you just refer to "an a-bomb from a-rod", "georgie juiced one", "swishalicious", etc as a class act?!
  19. Bloomy has a huge budget gap to fill. He has all ready demonstrated a desire to close firehouses. Its plainly obvious he is going to go after firehouses. Layoffs are not going to happen with the current economic climate. They're too costly. If things change for the city, maybe then but there is plenty of space to scatter firefighters if they start closing houses.
  20. I thought the original order was for 20 trucks. Price seems about right for 20 trucks.
  21. Why the switch to type 1's? If there an opening from the cab to the box or did they go with an intercom?
  22. October 22, 2009 – The U.S. Congress has approved legislation restoring notification requirements for emergency response personnel exposed to infectious diseases while on duty. The provision was included as part of S. 1793, the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Treatment Extension Act of 2009. The bill passed the U.S. House of Representatives by a vote of 408-9, and passed the U.S. Senate unanimously. President Obama is expected to sign the bill into law in the near future. When the Ryan White law was reauthorized in 2006, the infectious disease notification provisions, in an apparent oversight, were dropped from the law along with several other provisions that had outlived their usefulness. Their restoration will allow emergency responders exposed to life-threatening illnesses, such as tuberculosis or hepatitis, to receive notification within 48 hours from the receiving medical facility. “IAFF members put themselves at risk every day, providing pre-hospital patient care in chaotic, unsterile environments where they are routinely at risk of exposure to blood-borne and airborne pathogens,” says IAFF General president Harold Schaitberger. “Restoring these critical provisions will allow emergency responders to better protect themselves, their coworkers and their families.” S. 1793 also requires the Secretary of Health and Human Services to update the list of diseases for which notification would be required. The IAFF will continue working closely with Secretary Kathleen Sebelius as this process advances to ensure its members are well protected.Ryan
  23. While the 48 hour rule can be waived they are still required to notify the transporting agency. My only issues are that its up to the Secretary of Health and Human Services to determine which diseases are covered and we still cannot compel someone to be tested.

  25. I don't know what to tell you, but Icahn and Bronx Success were both starting the vaccinations on Wednesday and I'm assuming they weren't the only two. Even got my very first swine flu complication this morning. Shockingly the injection site was tender and his arm sore the next morning!!!! Poor mother thought her son was gonna die from "the swines flus".
