As happy as I am to have my little volley pension coming my way, it will not do what you want it to. Spend that money on your facility and on things and events to keep your members happy.

One can only hope. http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/2010/01/30/2010-01-30_lets_pull_fireboxes_mike_says.html Mayor Bloomberg wants to extinguish fire alarm boxes from city streets. Bloomberg pitched the fiery move this week as part of his budget for fiscal year 2011, saying it would save FDNY $2.5 million. Since 85% of calls made through the street boxes are false alarms, Bloomberg said, "In the days where everybody has cell phones ... the city would be just as safe without them." Only 140 structural fires last year out of 26,666 were first called in through an alarm box - and phone calls on those fires came in after the boxes were pulled, according to the FDNY.

They are the latest in sidewalk protection accessories from the DOT called bell bollards. They're maybe 2 feet tall, black and white, and are shaped like a ...well, bell. They are used in places where vehicles frequently make tight turns or u-turns and allow tires to glance off and continue without damage while still protecting pedestrians from errant rescues, ambulances, and cars.

Relatively few people actually live in that neighborhood around Wall St. All the brokers, lawyers, bankers, and execs that don't live there don't give a gosh darn.

16Fire, without a doubt accurate, but I'm not sure thats enough for provfd's mm any day statement.

Anyone using helmets with the slide out shields? How well do they work?

The visibility isn't so much an issue because most of the visibility you need is in the lower 2/3 of your windshield. Most rearmounts are similar to driving your personal vehicle with the visors down. Not ideal, but something you can deal with. The extra clearance you need to manage is easier because its in front where you can see it.

OK, I'll bite here. Why? Assuming station space isn't an issue, how is a MM superior?

I'm not saying he was at fault, but the last thing you want behind the wheel is a distracted driver. His partner should have taken over driving. I've been in this situation twice with partners. Its just not worth the risk.

We weren't the first, but we certainly sent the most resources. One guy with some brass on his collar ranting is just that, some guy. He's essentially bitching that the US didn't take control and run the show. As for who's first, it was the Chinese. They staged a photo op so they could claim they were first. As per a guy on the ground, the chinese rolled up with hand tools and jumpsuits. They're slightly more capable than the locals with less language skills. Go China!

What's the load capacity on that stokes mount?

Give them a break, they're only following suit. Ossining, Valhalla and Hawthorn all pay EMS members as well as several combination FDs. Fact is, the majority of the members are volunteers.

doctors, lawyers, pilots, etc the test is after the training. Everyone then has the same knowledge base.

Always remember, you're no good to the patient if you become one yourself. Speedy recovery to the crew.

FDNY EMS 26W3 approximately 1008 calls (missing a couple months so I used the average).

CFD320, thanks for the detailed post. That is the accurate and technical end of my early morning babble. If the city can prove the test filters out the best people for the job, then the test stands. FDNY couldn't do that. So, what makes for the best qualified candidate? You must use a test that has been proven to be job related or affect everyone the same. Yes, the vulcans are flipping idiots who would rather see this job torn to pieces if it meant more blacks in their ranks. If they were truly worried about quality minority candidates entering the FD they would have been out there recruiting them. As soon as the city put together a real recruitment drive they wound up with an estimated 20% minorities expected to be hired (at least before the economy went south). Worst case scenario the city has to pull minorities from the established list. These are still people who did well enough on the test to get a list number. These are people who maybe would have gotten on the job without all this.

The argument is not that the firefighters or test writers are racists. It starts with the dept not being able to prove that the test did anything to help select better firefighters. First class or last class and you're still getting firefighters with similar pass rates and similar promotions rates. The tests in question had an higher failure rate amongst minorities. Traditionally in any standardized test, your basic education has a lot to do with how well you do on the test. Poor people get a crappier education than rich people. Its not all society, there are many factors including family and community issues. Here in grand ol' NYC the vast majority of our minorities come from garbage communities with weak schools, broken homes, and little community support. They are not going to do as well as better educated people who grew up in better communities with better schools. It just so happens these better communities are a little heavy on the white end of the spectrum. SO, what is really a poverty bias takes on a racial bias. In the Jim Crow south there were many laws put into place to disenfranchise blacks without explicitly preventing blacks from voting. Things like property ownership requirements and literacy requirements while not explicitly targeting blacks were used to target them. So piles of precedent and case law were developed to prevent those types of actions. This is the same principal that the city has lost on. The test wasn't intentionally racist, but it had the unintended consequence of placing a greater hurdle in the way of minorities. Now if you can create a test that directly speaks towards someone's ability as a firefighter or aptitude for becoming a firefighter you can test away to your hearts content. That is why you have the latest test created by the city. While it appears to be a lot of bullshit and unimportant babble, the test was essentially a pshych profile. I hope this made sense and didn't ramble too much. If it did, then why are you still reading?

I'm sorry, but you have to be aware of your surroundings at times. While he is absolutely allowed to practice his religion, a little heads up to a stewardess that he's about to do something she may be unfamiliar with would have gone a long way.

Because its worth it. Seriously though, I don't get your rant. What do you mean by painful, drawn out, difficult and obscure?
