PFD does not bill for false alarms. They can forward chronic false alarm locations for the village building inspector to issue a violation. This is a corrective action and not revenue generator.

If people want to be known when they rate someone, they can put their name in the comments

With the Q its not so much about the volume or the range of the sound, its the modulation of the sound the mechanics of the sound wave. The modulation is what allows people to determine which way the sound is coming from. My cycling the siren tone high and low it gives the left and right ear a chance to try and determine which ear is hearing the sound first, and therefor where the sound is coming from. If you pin your Q on high wine or your electric siren on any rapidly repeating noise the person become disoriented and cannot determine where the sound is coming from. A similar affect occurs in urban settings where the sounds can echo off the buildings confusing the ears. I have to try and dig the paper out of my old laptop, but someone did an analysis on the net affect of the differences between a mechanical and electronic siren. Mechanical do a better job at penetrating sound insulation and traveling further. If you want a mechanical siren without the draw of a Q, I believe Timberwolf makes a mechanical siren popular on smaller rigs and ambulances out west.

Meet the New NYC Fire Commish, Salvatore Cassano The city's most troubled department gets a new boss with blood on his hands By Wayne Barrett Tuesday, Feb 9 2010 A couple of weeks after Mike Bloomberg announced that 40-year fire department veteran Salvatore Cassano would replace Nicholas Scoppetta, the commissioner he had served as a top aide for eight years, the mayor went to the FDNY's Brooklyn headquarters to boast about the new record low in fire deaths. Bloomberg attributed the decline to innovations at the department, praising Cassano in particular without mentioning that deaths are down to a similar degree in every city in America where cell phones are sold. Then the mayor introduced Cassano as "Nick," a slip of the tongue suggesting just how little change Cassano's appointment represents for the city's most troubled department. http://www.villagevoice.com/2010-02-09/news/meet-the-new-nyc-fire-commish-salvatore-cassano/1

With the advent of these "partnerships" the state was convinced that the eval period was unnecessary. Essentially the hospital builds the cath lab and buys the staff from the established partner. In the case of White Plains the staff is coming out of Presby. White Plains was suppose to be approved two weeks ago, but was delayed some reason. As a result I got the chance to check out the new facility at Presby on its first day and its absolutely stunning.

yes, but only if there are performance reports

Even agencies receiving public money are not necessarily required to answer FOIL requests. An agency contracted by a municipality for service would be exempt.

Yeah, complaining about something being out there and then putting it out there yourself makes you part of the problem. Its not about how accessible the video is. Its that you're doing the very thing you're ranting against. As to the appropriateness of the video and photos, yes it is appropriate. When you benefit from public exposure then your victories, losses, and in this case his death are all fair game. This wasn't a private figure who died in an accident. What about the compilation "fail" videos and entire TV shows dedicated to accidents and injuries. Its all in the same vein of voyeuristic experiences.

One step ahead of you. Sent it in earlier today. We'll see what it turns up.

At what point do we stop bending over backwards to make due with less and we start cutting back on services? Every time we maintain our level of service after a "devastating" cut or develop a new revenue stream that becomes the new status quo. We will not get any credit for this when the economics of it all improve.

First, I've gotta congratulate you on keeping the longest running thread I've seen in any forum active. Second, how can anyone hire 16 people for less than it costs to take 16 from a much larger staffing pool. Administrative costs alone are going to make that difficult. Then, how does this dept negotiate insurance benefits and provide a pension without breaking the bank?

Federal employee's and sub-contractors with some exceptions are covered under federal whistle blower legislation. Clinton made headlines with Whistleblower protection when he tasked AG Reno with handling federal law enforcement whistleblowers. There is also the SOX act was in response to Enron and other investment scandals. However this is very narrow and limited in scope. The average worker is usually protected under a piecemeal of common law and various pieces of legislation. Only a handful of states have real comprehensive protection. NYS is not one of them.

You can keep up assuming and alleging things, but can you come back with call numbers from any of the volley agencies? How come there was no stink when this first happened months ago. Only when it hits the post do people, none of whom have identified themselves as being a member of one of affected agencies, start crying about it. Here are the facts. Shortly before 9/11 for whatever reason it was decided to give all the volunteer agencies a unit designation so they could log on into the FDNY EMS dispatch system. These units were never added to the suggested unit strings. They would just sit there in the available unit lists. Some dispatchers and units would take it upon themselves to dump calls onto the volleys. This was never dept protocol, just a few members acting on their own. The volunteers would also respond to calls they heard come over their local PD precinct frequencies or EMS frequency. The other alternative was local residents who called the volunteers directly. FDNY has removed the volunteers from their dispatch system. Thy are still getting calls from units and dispatchers trying to dump jobs, they are still buffing calls, and residents can still call them directly. Please tell me how I am just spewing the company line. Give me anything that disputes what I've said.

This has no affect on the day to day operations of any agency.
-
If you don't use it for more than 30 days, stop carrying it. Of course there are exceptions ie:bailout rope, but if you're not using it take a minute to consider how important it is to have on you at all times. Dr. Murphy will ensure that anytime you need something out of a pocket in a critical moment it will be blocked by something else if available.
-
How do you go about inspecting your tools for fatigue or damage? Regularly replace the tape?
-
Yeah, time alone means nothing, but when you meet an experienced provider like GAW on a call for the first time, you have to give them the benefit of the doubt. Instead too often people and especially damn medics come rolling through like our poo don't stink and dismiss the lowly EMTs on scene. Some take the idea that respect is earned a bit too far and demand everyone start at the bottom.
-
I'm sorry about that. Come ddoyle. Where are you?

100% Every agency has their ups and downs. While it has been a bit since I was a PVAC member, it wasn't that long ago. At the time PVAC was only functional because of the hard work and borderline insane commitment of a few people. I picked up many calls from work either on the second tone or after a phone call, on one occasion coming all the way from Yonkers, another White Plains, etc. Pleasantville was far from perfect, but there were about 8 or 10 people doing 90% of the work and I'm willing to bet its still essentially those people carrying most of the load.
-
So, how much experience is enough? Pleasantville has members with several years in the dept with zero fire experience. These are often times active members who just happen to have no experience because of how infrequent substantial fires are. In those last 285 years we lost a few firefighters. How many could have been saved had an effective FAST been standing by? They also got along just fine for years with buckets, want to go back to that also? Izzy, I'm currious. Why did you included the medical training for FAST members?
-
You give them too much credit. I monitor PD since they often get the jump on jobs while our dispatchers are re-interviewing callers and they get plenty of ERS no response jobs. In the 42 and 44 precincts alone there are a couple per 8 hr tour and thats only when I'm in the truck listening.
-
Nice idea with the tool box. What pump controls are in the cab?
-
I don't see any lines coming off it. Looks to me like a well placed truck.

Teachers are taking a big hit too and they were the first to back him. Luckily Bloomy isn't your typical poll. As bleak as it looks it will not be this severe. All these cuts are based on Patterson's proposed budget. The state legislature and city council still have to weigh in.
