  1. keep it up crimecop. I often disagree with your politics, but intelligent passionate discussion is something to be encouraged. As far as "one nation under god", as someone pointed out it was added in the 50's a wee bit after the founding of this nation. I haven't read the constitution since college, but can you tell me where it mentions god? The declaration only has a vague reference to god that can in no way be linked to anyone's particular god. So, short of a more specific reference who's god are we working with? The Christian or Jewish god who had a real taste for blood back in the day? If we go Muslim, they are extremely liberal with the blade or stone and more than happy to take a life. I know very little about Hindu, Taoism, Buddhism, etc but the ancient Romans and Greeks with their polytheistic ideals had no qualms about taking life. I go atheist. Nothing to hide behind for or against. Death penalty doesn't affect murder rates, costs more than imprisonment, and occasionally kills innocent people. As for the original thread, funk this guy. Vic didn't chose how they died he shouldn't have a choice. If 5 officers volunteer, then have at sirs. If not then give him the needle. No need to force that upon someone's conscience.
  2. HFD had an extremely difficult extrication today due to the size of this patient. Anyone on scene want to describe this one?
  3. Careful, 123 main st already burned. This all comes back to that same old westchester/ NYS in general home rule issue. Every jurisdiction has their own say. So until we start pushing our leaders and educating our residents we are just as responsible as the people making these myopic decisions.
  4. They are in Penn 24/7. Not many of them, but they're there.
  5. sorry, twisted up the screen names. I had meant you nfd. Have a good trip. These days I'm sitting on a bumper in lower manhattan. Not as much sun, but a better view.
  6. Anesti, I met you over there last spring. Its a tough unit, spent so much time sitting on the bumper that day, I got a sunburn and finished my crossword. It is the 89 or cross street location for 18Rescue (18Zebra when we met).
  7. You clearly do not understand what is really involved in firefighting
  8. Only because the people filling the complaint didn't do the leg work ahead of time. In 2 EMS stations alone FDNY is coughing up 5 figures a month for unsafe work conditions. You have to demonstrate a hazard and prove the dept was aware and made no progress towards a solution.
  9. NY1 Story ABC Story NBC Story St. Vincent's Hospital Manhattan inpatient services, including all acute, rehab, and behavioral health, is shutting down. The Board of Directors of Saint Vincent Catholic Medical Centers voted to authorize the closure on Tuesday night. The vote came after a six-month long effort to save the financially troubled institution, which has operated in the Village for over 160 years.
  10. You only see the psychologist if they have questions about your psych evaluation. For filling the class they just keep processing people until they have enough. I've heard of people going in for their psych and agility the week before they were sworn in.
  11. As of the closure announcement the Harrison facility was to remain open. I have no idea what the future holds. It all depends on who owns the EMS equipment and who is filling for bankruptcy. If its the hospital itself thats filing then the hospital and all of its assets will be sold off to pay off its debts. If its the company that operates the hospital and the related properties then everything gets liquidated. Clairs was renamed Vinny's North and shortly thereafter closed. The EMS operations were pick up by FDNY and other area hospitals. St. Johns and Mary Immaculate were the Queens facilities that closed last year. JUst stumbled upon this JEMS article about the state of hospital finances. Its about Miami Fl and how they're on the brink of losing their only Trauma center. It also mentions some of the budget issues facing other systems. http://www.jems.com:80/news_and_articles/news/2010/03/jackson_health_system_nears_insolvency.html
  12. The PTOP for incomming medics is on for this summer. Things could change, but the city just committed FDNY the money for a new station on the West side of Manhattan, the dept is picking up the Vinny's ALS units, possibly some Brooklyn units, and maybe even an added unit or two in Manhattan to make up for extended transport times now that Vinnys is closing.
  13. Did you call the recruitment number for FDNY? As screwed as the city's budget is, they're regularly hiring EMTs and pick up a class of new medics every few months.
  14. Back in 2000 when the catholic medical centers merged in the hopes of getting them out from under the archdiocese and its financial troubles, they all merged under into the Saint Vincent's Catholic Medical Centers Network. Then 9/11 happens and they can't manage the mountain of debt they took on. A few years later SVCMCN has to file for bankruptcy. St Clairs (Vinny's North) and some other ancillary facilities went first in 2007 when they emerged from restructuring. The highlight of the return featured a major expansion of Vinnys that included a several hundred unit residential complex that was going to be built and managed by a 3rd party. In 2009 after several community driven revisions the plans were approved and expected to be completed by 2012. Shortly after approval the Greenwich Village Preservation something or other lead by Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins sued everyone involved and effectively killed the proposed tower. With the loss of this income there was no way to cover their growing debt. $300 million of new debt in 3 years is a big deal. NYS floated them several loans to cover payroll while they looked for a buyer, but Continuum had no intention of maintaining the ER and no one else wants the debt. They have 300 million thats due now. Plus however many millions more that still hasn't come due. So any bail out would have to have 300 million liquid right now and probably another few hundred million in the wings to give them time to find a new revenue stream. On the upside the Greenwich Village Preservation something or other is now protesting the closing of the hospital who's fate they sealed. As far as why NYs hospitals are consolidating, one story I read blamed it on the New York Hospital and Presbyterian Hospital merger. To stay competitive a medical center or hospital group has to provide everything. The old days of stabilize and transfer to a city hospital for the uninsured are gone because of all of the partnerships and referrals linking hospitals. For example your pacemaker being implanted at NYU by your NYU doc may actually happen in Bellevue's Cath Lab. Your Residents working at Jacobi or North Central are also working at Monty and Einstein. So now everyone is sharing the load of the poorly insured or uninsured while the pool of insured is more scattered than ever. I'm sure some of it also has to do with changes in populations.
  15. Continuum health partners made a run at it, but it wasn't feasible without significant debt restructuring and a major change in hospital operations. No debt restructuring and bad press caused Continuum to bail. Mount Sinai gave a it a shot recently but bailed after they got a look at the books. If there was a way to make money out of it someone would be after it. There are enough nearby hospitals to cover all of the profitable services. The biggest loss will be felt in the transport times to west side ERs during week days, parades, holidays, almost every day.
  16. That park is incredibly difficult to access. Some areas not even accessible by ATV. I can think of one small area in the middle of the park you may be able hoist a patient out, but the rest of the park is heavily wooded. The park has several miles of fairly technical mountain biking trails and its been sheer luck that this hasn't been an issue sooner. Graham Hills has also been the site of a few brush fires, but none in the last 10 to 15 years. Even if you know the park front to back, its can be hard to describe your location and even harder to find someone based on a description of their location. Can 60 or state police obtain GPS coordinates from 911 calls? Then can anyone do something with those coordinates when they get them? How long does it take to get the county ATVs activated? This was lucky, and the individual wasn't too badly injured. However a punctured lung, lacerated organ, or impalement could kill someone in 2 hrs. These questions don't just apply to Graham Hills. This area is littered with isolated hiking and cycling trails.
  17. At this time the clinics are the only thongs that will remain open The ER is slatted to close.
  18. I didn;t think statflight had winch capability. Foshay would maybe let an ATV in, but not smoothly or easily. Better access if off Polywiggle.
  19. maybe instead of top rated members, a list or top rated messages or even better, top rated threads if thats possible.
  20. If its available, go fios and dump cable. saddest thing about moving to NYC was leaving fios behind.
  21. Actually, P'ville has the smallest slice of the park. It just so happens the main access is in Pleasantville. As a matter of fact there is a house or two at the end of Central Av are technically within the Thornwood Fire District. I believe it was several years ago when Pleasantville, Thornwood, and Chappaqua were drawing up a mutual aid plan for responses on the Saw Mill that Pleasantville and Thornwood clarified some of the district lines. The houses at the end of Central Av were one issue, the commercial lot next to McDonalds (the light poles in the lot are the district line), and the superintendents house at the Mount Pleasant Cottage School are the ones I remember off the top of my head. So, back to Grahm Hills.. Hawthorne has the Western half, Thornwood the Eastern half and Pleasantville the northern edges surrounding the Locust Rd area and Woodland Dr areas. They also have the parking lot and 117 access rd well as the Pollywiggle Rd access. Poor Hawthorne doesn't have any access. In fact the park is almost completely fenced off on the Hawthorne side except for a few deer trails and stream beds. Maybe they're trying to say something about Hawthorne.
  22. The official park entrance is in Pleasantville, but the park is in both Thornwood and Pleasantville.
  23. BaltimoreSun On Friday, the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ordered that Albert Snyder of York, Pa., pay costs associated with Fred Phelps' appeal. Phelps is the leader of the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan., which held a protest at the funeral of Snyder's son, Marine Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder, in Westminster in 2006. At first glance this is a truly reprehensible decision in support of a vile group who deserve a horrible end under the boots of our service men and women. At the root is our first amendment right to freedom of speech. We're free to say pretty much whatever we want with few exceptions no matter how offensive. Fire away...
  24. FDNY EMS has an on call medical director at all times with the ability to perform field amputations. However this is set up more for collapse rescue type situations. We even have one extremely passionate doc that has his bone saw in his vehicle at all times. Although that may serve a dual purpose for his QA/QI interviews.
  25. So, its a walk in clinic with a lab and CT?
