The house has a beautiful memorial to the members lost on 9/11. The marble was donated and the city provided the brass plaques. Now they want to create a complimentary memorial for all the other members the house has lost over the years. Pepsi is giving out millions of dollars to projects voted on through their website. You can vote once a day till the end of the month by texting 102739 to 73774 or going to this link http://www.refresheverything.com/e8l2b8memorial

Gamewell, you got the Usonia situation 100%. Abaduck, remember the hoopla during Obama's attempt at healthcare reform? The argument from the right was that healthcare is not a right. It is a privilege. Same goes for fire protection. Hell, the guy even said it himself. He thought if he didn't pay they'd still come.

The number of people who know how to work the system like that is not a substantial number. The problem is, when we find calls that were intentionally upgraded by the caller we get pissed and it makes those memories stronger. Truth be told the majority of my intentionally upgraded calls come from grumpy's street side brethren and ff's that don't want to spend 10, 20, or 30 minutes waiting on the low priority drunk, injury, or EDP. Anyone who's been around long enough has calls that came across innocuous but found to be serious. Its going to happen occasionally. What happens much more frequently is idiot drivers getting in the way of 25 ton vehicles traveling at 30 mph.

I can certainly understand why people don't support the Democrats, but BadBox just nailed why it baffles me as to how people in our professions can support Republicans. Third parties are viable, especially in local elections.

You can get better and more detailed specs and photos of commercial planes from manufacturers and military aircraft are well documented by the government. As long as its plainly visible I don't see the point in restricting photographer access.

If you think cops never cheat or lie then you really need to grow up. The most honest cop in the world is still going to lie his balls off when the wife asks if she looks fat, lie about the last fish he caught, and lie throughout dozens of other situations in life where the lie does no harm and keeps his life moving along. If you get home from the supermarket and see they didn't charge you for something are you going back cash in hand to fix it? What about every cop that accepts a free coffee or lunch while at work? None of this means these are officers that can't be trusted. There was no worry about a sudden shift in ethics or ability to do their job when New England was hit with rampant and systemic cheating on EMT certifications. This to me us much more minor as the FBI incident was an in house test to asses their people.

I wouldn't say terrifying. Yes their apparent lack of knowledge could lead to problems in court and with prosecution, but there is no cataclysm on the horizon. These agents will continue doing their job likely making no fewer or no more mistakes than they currently do.

Rescue 6 is a reserve rig that was last staffed for the Republican National Convention. I believe they're keeping 1 as a spare and 1 as Rescue 6.

Generally replacement is done based upon age. Vehicles may be replaced sooner if found to be overly beat up during preventative maintenance.

For all of FDNYs experience and equipment it looks like they could use some help on drafting ops. After 9/11 the dept felt it was important enough where now every engine is equipped with flexible suction, but here at this fire they had to wait more than 20 minutes for a Marine Unit to get water flowing and later established a hydrant at least a 1/4 mile away. The water line isn't more than 10 feet below the pier there and the water is several feet deep before large debris and a few feet further to bottom.

The engine, was absolutely close enough and right against the rail with a stick right next to it. Those east side piers are very strong and fully capable of the construction traffic they regularly handle. Much of the FDR, and substantial strictures all around Manhattan are built on these piers. They had all the hard suction off the first engine and one guy looked like he was trying to explain to the chauffeur how to position the rig. The BC arrived and then the suction was dropped and they started hand stretching. In drafting the distance or number of lengths isn't as much of a problem as the vertical height you have to pull the water. 10 feet is within spec for the new engines and two lengths of suction would have made the water. I know I was behind Eng 80 going to the fire, but I don't remember who got to the pier first. FDNY was well prepared to keep everyone safe. There were life vests a plenty. R3 and the marine unit had guys ready to go in, but if there had been a life at risk they would have had serious problems. They attempted to use the deck guy but the valve to the gun was opened before the pump was spun up, so by the time the stream reached and was aimed at the fire most of the water was lost in the river. I'm about as big a cheerleader as there is for FDNY and have benefited greatly from the knowledge of many of their members. This was not their strong suit.

Do yourself a favor and head over to E 163 and Southern Blvd. There's a little bakery on the north east corner on Southern Blvd that makes possibly the best in the Bronx. Its a thick drinkable milk, oatmeal, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg mix. That and a coffee from the bakery on Intervale between E 163 and Westchester. Damn I miss my old area.

I don't know, the motorola touch screens FDNY EMS uses has survived water, coffee, spanish oatmeal, and some questionable stains from the overnight. The programing is garbage and constantly crashing but the screens are pretty reliable.

Wow, the drug testing surprised me. How do you guys handle the random testing? Is there a provision for testing after accidents or for testing on an officers suspicions?
-
Absolutely there should be driving checks on every member. Someone runs into you while stopped at a light, absolutely you should not be held responsible. You have a couple of at fault accidents or tack on a few tickets in a short period of time and you absolutely should not be behind the wheel of an ambulance. These are large vehicles often near the weight capacity for the vehicles brakes and chassis with powerful engines. There are people in the back of that vehicle and the people in the streets around you that are dependent upon you ability to safely navigate that vehicle. You're driving record directly speaks to your ability to control yourself and your vehicle.

Just curious if they screened for living donors?
-
Yes, and like firearms, the laws only apply to those who choose to follow them.

Because Westchester does. I'm not being snarky, but its been that way for as long as I've been around and at this point is part of the local vernacular. There is no right to privacy out in public.

The more powerful 5mW green lasers started becoming more popular with astronomy enthusiasts and have ranges of over a mile for less than $20. If you're willing to shop overseas (thank you google) you can go as powerful as you want to pay for. Lasers that can light cigarets at close range, burst balloons, and do real eye damage are battery powered and pen sized while lab quality lasers with a DC converter are available for a few bucks more.

About 4 or 5 years ago there was. It was never acted on, and I'd be surprised if it was still valid.

DDT was great. There's been an increase in the push to phase it out in Africa recently and not for the environmental costs. For some unknown reason in insect populations that have developed a resistance, some are showing an increase in activity after DDT application. Not so awesome to stimulate the feeding and breeding of a pest your trying to eradicate. The theory is these bugs have "learned" that after DDT exposure is a prime time to thrive as competitors and predators are killed off. Want to kill bedbugs, one of the safest and most effective is CO2. All hard surfaces and electronics are bathed in CO2 and all furniture is bagged and saturated with the gas. Its the most effective and far and away the most expensive.

There have got to be better options than the gear FDNY EMS uses. Urban search and rescue teams do just fine operating in the worst conditions imaginable with much less restrictive and less cumbersome equipment. If you've ever treated a serious patient wearing that gear or seen FDNY EMS members start treating a patient, the first thing they do is start stripping the stuff off. At a minimum my helmet and jacket are gone and if I have a moment, the APR goes too. The pants would go, but there just isn't a fast enough way to do it. So now in the back of the bus where our bags plus two medics fills up much of the usable space we're adding a pile of clothing.

Alway be careful. Had an amateur exterminator get rear ended. 5 gallons of insecticide sloshing around the back of a minivan is uncool.

Thats an unreinforced cinderblock wall. Very little lateral strength. Easy to do that much damage.
