  1. This is something that needs to be handled on a case by case basis. The leaders in community A need to have a talk with community B and address the issue. Across the board decisions to with hold resources just because they're paid violates the letter and spirit of mutual aid agreements. How is that any different than a volunteer agency refusing to go for fear of burning out their reliable members?? Paid or not these are still valuable resources to the community that is counting on them to respond.
  2. On my birthday way back in 1987 (or 88) a plane crashed into a house in Pleasantville. Poor homeowner was in the shower when the plane landed in the next room. They still managed it and without bunker gear or an electronic foam portioner. Planes have been "landing" in unexpected places since they started taking off. There is no way to train and practice on every single type of emergency. Start with the basics. You have a composite construction vehicle with flammable fuel. There's not a dept out there that shouldn't be able to handle that. Airbags in seat belts, we should all be prepared for. Explosive deployed parachute, we have experience with airbags; similar concept different scale. At some point, no matter how big your agency there is a number where your resources are overwhelmed by patients. Maybe its 2 or its 40, either way triage and transport as available. Ignore that fact that its a plane crash and focus on the elements and its nothing that any agency shouldn't be able to handle. who knows, maybe net week it'll be a Carrera GT into a fuel tanker into a church van just as easily as it could be an A320 onto 684.
  3. This is going to become an intox/BS sick job dumping ground. Hell, Vinnys was an intox dumping ground before it closed. Manhattan hospitals are not so far away that you cannot skip to a fully equipped facility without causing harm. Besides, the patients where time really matters will be going to the same hospitals as before. This is a clinic that accepts ambulances, not a whole lot more. I have a hard enough time selling patients with legit medical complaints on the benefit of going to a nearby hospital and then getting transferred to their doctors facility in LI or Jersey.
  4. Thats why we drill. You don't send out the same response for a gas main explosion as you do for an odor of gas just for practice, why is that OK for an aircraft emergency??
  5. Wasn't there a similar crash 5 or so years ago? Cesna down in the same area.
  6. They rioted after beating the yankees. After the series they just kind of partied. Boston is a special lil town, apparently fans didn't realize there was one more series.
  7. This really wasn't a surprise. Montreal, Vancouver, Ottowa; Canadians just like to riot.
  8. Here's something from Ford discussing different conspicuity options available. Everything from car color to sirens. https://www.fleet.ford.com/showroom/CVPI/pdfs/BRP_Report_Out_Countermeasures.pdf A 2004 paper from the US Fire Administration... http://www.usfa.dhs.gov/downloads/pdf/publications/fa-272.pdf Reflective striping works. Its too bad you think its ugly, but it works.
  9. abaduck may be very liberal, but he has never been anti-police. He usually goes to great lengths to point out he's not against police, he just questions the powers given to them. We NEED people to question. Question changes, question the status quo, question everything. He's not one of these whiney children bitching incessantly. He asks questions, makes points, sometimes changes his stance, and other times doesn't. Without debate, what's the point?
  10. adults stuck in swings, kids stuck in vending machines, people stuck in wrought iron fences, etc.. These are all common especially in the summer.
  11. Is he really an a-hole for this? Its a valid question and absolutely true in respect to the volley world. Ed did a good job clarifying what would to the casual observer appear to be several vehicles out of service. Vehicles go out of service all of the time for maintenance, training, calls, etc. Publicity and community outreach is important. So long as accommodations are made to maintain protection I see no harm.
  12. HOLY CRAP!!! This is an allegation made by one individual against these members. They have not been convicted and as of the article were only charged with endangerment and harassment. I can't believe how many people have jumped on the bandwagon here. So, due process applies only for some crimes and some people now? I don't know any of the people involved, but I've seen enough high profile accusations of sex crimes later recanted by the "victims" to allow due process before running my mouth. People losing their jobs over false accusations happens all the time, doesn't make it right. SRS131EMTFF, you clearly do not believe in due process, or atleast not a version that has any integrity. We are already held to a higher standard and they should be suspended as soon as charges were filed. You're youth is evident and you obviously have not witnessed someone suffer through a false accusation of a serious crime. I have, and you are absolutely treated as guilty until proven innocent in more than enough aspects. You suffer substantially until everything is settled and are never even close to being compensated for your losses.
  13. Seriously?? Suspension pending trial is expected, but termination just because they were accused is absurd. This is absolutely heinous if the allegations are true, but until convicted of a crime they are just that, allegations.
  14. After being trained on the Petzel Exo system, the body belay is absolutely not faster and as far as safety is concerned there's no comparison between the two. I have only been trained on the body belay and then the Petzel system so I can't speak on any other systems.
  15. you were shocked by this? really? I am a frequent offender of blocking hydrants, fire lanes, etc but only when convenient parking options are unavailable. Maybe in the minutes before you arrived there were no convenient spots. Nothing like coming outside after the delivery truck, engine, RMP, and dbl parked cars are gone to see my ambulance sitting in the middle of the street all by itself. He's not on a call, so yes he could absolutely park somewhere else but is this really that big of a deal? Its the fire lane and the curb cut is still easily accessible. More importantly, you knew where the offender was. Did you take this up with them personally or just come here to whine about it?
  16. What do you think happens when you leave two cold and hungry people in the middle of the woods and tell them to wait until morning?? They try and get themselves out, putting them at greater risk of injury or death. There are better ways than abandonment to address this. Out west if you get into trouble due to your own stupid you get a bill for services.
  17. Why not? What did they do wrong?
  18. What percent of the total vehicles on the road were black?? Wasn't there a large shift towards black and white cars around that time? I know around here they were increasingly popular for a bit. I guarantee that the majority of the fire trucks involved in fatal fires and roll overs accidents are red. Thats either a poorly written stat or a bullshit number used to push an agenda.
  19. paint jobs do not improve visibility. If all the lights and reflective striping don't do it, no color is going to make a difference. The additional cost of painting the car is compounded by the additional cost of repairing these cars. When they are slashing budgets and laying people off, every wasted dollar matters.
  20. Does it really matter who posts RIP on of these threads? Its not like there's any unique info coming from this thread. The story is all over the media. So yes, on EMTBravo a thread about lights and consolidation os going to get a lot more attention than this tragedy. But that is only because there are better places to focus your concern than a thread here that just posts links to other sites.
  21. Answered my own question. The bill was passed. Any candidate who took the last test up to the age of 36 may register for the next test.
  22. http://www.ny1.com/content/top_stories/139772/city-council-expected-to-approve-new-fdny-exam-legislation http://www.dnainfo.com/20110526/manhattan/aging-wouldbe-firefighters-shut-out-by-litigation-push-for-higher-age-limits So it looks like the new age limit was to be voted on by the city council earlier today. Any word on the result?
  23. Has anyone forgotten that this is PHILADELPHIA. The same city where 5 officers were shot and killed in separate incidents only 3 years ago. A city with a still increasing crime rate and shrinking police force. Had jackass complied, gotten on his knees allowed the officer to disarm him, and then still been arrested and harassed he'd have a point. He never gave the officer a chance to de-escalate things. Who gives a crap what you say you have, until I can prove it I'm wouldn't buy it either. Look at the guy's youtube channel. He's a poop stirrer. Yes, he has the right to open carry, but everything in life has consequences. You need to be sensitive to the environment around you with any actions you undertake. What about the idiot who tried showing up to a presidential rally with his assault rifle?? I don't care how much you're allowed to have it, that wasn't the appropriate place for it.
  24. In Texas you don't have the population density you have here, so the developers have more choice as to where they're going to put their newest project. That comes down to who gives them the sweetest deal. NYC is able to demand things like schools, fire stations, and other infrastructure be built in but Yonkers doesn't have that same pull when they have to compete with the rest of southern westchester and north jersey for the NYC commuter crowd. White Plains had gotten infrastructure included in one of their pre bubble projects but eventually the cost became prohibitive and the developer walked away. Not only are these developments adding to the strain on the system, but they are frequently granted substantial tax breaks. The community is always left counting on the outward ripple of economic stimulation to eventually fill the gap. More income tax, more sales tax, more jobs, and eventually more businesses.
  25. Not at all. Add to your official duties documenting mechanism of injury and patient condition during extrication via photography and voila it is allowed. want to play it safe, as long as no patient photos are included this doesn't appear to apply. This seems pretty simple. It applies only to those summoned to the scene. If you're not responding as a provider you're not covered. If you are on scene working, any images recorded must be in accordance with your job. If you're wearing your helmet cam, if its part of a dept training program you should be allowed. Still unsure, after everything is said and done. Reach out to the family, explain what was recorded and get a release signed. No release signed, destroy all images. Release signed, utilize to the extent allowed by your agency's rules. This just adds a penalty to what should already be common sense practice.
