  1. Maybe one of the FDNY guys can correct me, but the added hard section was in direct response to the sudden shortage of water on 9/11. They had to wait for the fire boats to finish ferrying people to NJ before they could begin supplying water. I believe it was the firefighter that was committed to pumping for several days. I've witnessed a quick thinking Company attempting to get a draft running and it didn't go well. Manhattan has much better access to water than you realize. You've got just over 20' to the pump of vertical height to play with and a lot more horizontal. All of the parks dept piers and parks are capable of handling heavy equipment at reduced speeds and all of the piers around the bridges are currently or have recently been used as staging areas for the heavy machinery and supplies used in the recent replacement and rehab of the east river bridges. The East side has vehicular access from the mid 30's all the way around the island to the West Side, minus a few blocks around the old Marine 6(At least I think that's where Marine 6 was). The west side has Many sections with vehicle access scattered all the way up to Dyckman St. All of these piers were initially used for an industrial waterfront and have just been re-purposed as parks, roads, and bicycle paths. They are extremely well engineered. Of course only a couple of these areas are any good for a primary water supply as access is limited and in some cases weather dependent. However these are all options for that next "Oh Fudge" event. We all have those probably never going to use, but good skill to have things we train for and drafting should absolutely be included for firefighters.
  2. Because of the construction the memorial at ground zero will be initially restricted as to how many people can visit at a time. You can now book your reservations online here. It opens on 9/11 for a dedication to which all of families from 1993 and 2001 attacks are invited. On the 12th there is a special reception for these families as well as additional tours. Families will also have a permanent set of tickets reserved exclusively for their use every day after the 12th.
  3. There's no doubt that more lights and the blue lights are more visible. The issue is that at some point more visibility is not helpful and actually harmful.
  4. Hay and coal spontaneously combust for different reasons. Hay is because it is still alive and capable of cellular respiration after harvest. A high enough moisture content not only allows this respiration to continue, but it also serves to insulate and help catalyze the reaction. Charcoal I'm guessing goes the same way as coal. In the presence of an oxidative agent (air) the carbon in the charcoal reduces into CO2, CO, and heat. With enough ventilation charcoal shouldn't burn or react sufficiently to be perceptible. Wetting is an endothermic or heat trapping process. So the interface between wet and dry could take advantage of the increased heat from wetting and the natural decomposition of the charcoal. Seal that up tight in a plastic container and bingo, you've got a fire. Something like matchlite charcoal should be much more susceptible to this.
  5. the article is from june 1
  6. The ignorant people you speak of are all current members of the dept led by Captain Washington. This was not the fault of the applicants or candidates.
  7. We have Gatorade in the summer and hot chocolate in the winter. On all 3rd alarms or greater all members have their CO measured via Rad 57 prior to returning.
  8. This is in absolutely in no way unexpected. Both he and his father have a long history with the Rive Keepers. River Keepers have been fighting Indian Point since day one. River Keepers are run by the Kennedys. Cuomo's ex-wife/mother of his children is one of those Kennedys. thanks to the small Democratic margin in Albany I don't see this happening.
  9. Why can't it handle search and rescue? It appears there's a search light mounted above the pilot house and those boats sit very low in the water. I believe the deck is actually under the water line making reaching over the sides very easy.
  10. The increased pump capacity goes along with the added hard suction. As John pointed out, it was one of the many lessons learned on 9/11.
  11. Assuming the city council approves the current budget the closing will not be happening. That being said, vehicle replacement is a different budget item than staffing. Even as you're cutting staff trucks are still aging and will need to be replaced. Lastly, the FDNY TL fleet is in sorry shape. Companies are frequently in spares and at times are stuck in a spare rear mount when no TLs are available. They are long overdue for some new trucks.
  12. Likely. However monophasic are not administering so much more energy as I'd expect a substantial difference. The PADI and DAN AED training make no distinction between the two.
  13. They're perfectly safe on a boat. Your concerns are with ensuring the patient's chest is dry. There are some studies that support CPR during defibrillaton as being safe for the rescuers. If you're that concerned with stray voltage mopping up any extra water with a towel should suffice once on the boat.
  14. 6,000 gpm 3,000 hp worth of propulsion, 1700 horses dedicated to throwing water, a top speed of nearly 60 mph, and as SRS pointed out its a boat. That's why it costs so much.
  15. The bus driver forgot to put the bus in park. What more do you want?? Its a tragic accident.
  16. The study that started this thread is not concerned with causing repsiratory failure from the administration of high flow O2. The increased mortality is associated with hypercapnia and acidosis. The average patient was under EMS care for 45 minutes. I'm pretty sure Westchester's numbers are pretty close to that.
  17. Fire officers up to COD are all civil service positions promoted from below. COD while not civil service is still an appointment from below. Even if there's nothing written in the job description, the hiring pool is all firefighters. EMS requires officers to maintain their certification as a condition of employment. Medic officers can let their REMAC go and become EMT bosses but Medic is currently required for Lt and will likely become a requirement for other positions.
  18. Those exterior plasmas screens are a must have. Inside gets too crowded with everyone trying to watch TV, especially during Football season and any playoff game.
  19. Squads got some more regular responsibilities, but they're not going anywhere. There's no big savings in turning them back into engines and none were on the close list

  21. There isn't a local anywhere that wouldn't kill for a 90% response from its members. Hell some are just happy with 50%
  22. Sorry, but Bloomy has a bug up his kiester for the FD. Shockingly, they're going to come up 20 companies worth of funding short again. He's always been after more productivity, going as far as proposing to have firefighters cutting grass and sweeping streets. He got his 6 companies in 2003 and if I remember correctly was after closings as early as 2002. He still has the elimination of the 5th man and the dept is well over a year from adding any new members to the ranks so staffing shortages are going to continue to be rampant.
  23. Cuts Averted Its just a small blerb as part of a larger story on the teachers deal, but apparently the companies are miraculously safe again. "Also spared the falling budget ax were 20 fire companies that Bloomberg had marked for closure. Fire Commissioner Salvatore Cassano had said that closing those companies would slow emergency responses around the city, endangering lives. It's the third year in a row that City Council has rescued the fire companies from the budget knife after Bloomberg proposed shutting them."
  24. I'm sure they still use the same 10 cent rivet everyone else uses. Until someone fixes that you're better off buying cheap shears in bulk
  25. First and foremost, the union is just a representation of the members. If the union is garbage, the members allowed it. All the strongest unions have a history of strong member support. You have a chance to either put up or shut up. I hope it all goes well for you.
