In the early summer we'll usually get a few junkies and methadone patients who nod out in the sun only to wake up with some serious sunburns. They're easy burns to misjudge the severity as the burns can go extremely deep and still leave the surface intact. One guy had substantial full thickness burns across his chest and forehead that the transporting crew just thought were first and second degree burns. He wound up getting a transfer to Cornell a few hours later.

I have zero experience with cafs, so maybe someone can clear this up. One of the major selling points is decreased water damage and faster overhaul. So, after covering the walls and filling the room knee deep in foam, how you clear out the room and do so quickly? Not only do you want to find any fatalities in the fire room (body found next day by family headlines suck) but often enough there are closets, rooms, and voids with unusual access that can hide victims and fire.

That doesn't sound right. First, I have no idea where we'd put 9 of these. We have enough trouble with our 5 MERVs and the MRTU, BOB. BOB is up for replacement and there was a bid out for it. I've heard talk in the past about adding a second MRTU, but I've yet to see anything come of it.

Is anyone in Westchester offering a CPEP now?

There's a huge difference between military and paramilitary. For one, the time spent drilling on your salute. The more you get out there you'll see there's something about the way former military do certain things. One of them is saluting. I'd bet he's ex military.

American society has always been much more comfortable with graphic violence then pretty much anything else.

At least the headline is technically correct. That alone is impressive for the Journal news.

The dept will offer training classes before the exam. However, before the last exam the training offered by the FD did not match the exam they held. A good start is a GED study guide. It will cover basic math, reading comprehension, etc.

Not a clue when the next line engine order will go out, but the next round of High Pressure Pumpers bids are due by the end of the summer and the winning bid should be announced before the end of the year. I doubt you'll hear much about any other engines until that bid is settled.

Don't forget the two NYPD Auxiliary members that were shot in Greenwich Village 4 years ago after a shooter saw them following him from the scene of his first shooting. He chased them down and murdered them. As much as uniforms are a deterrent they can also become a target to someone deranged or desperate enough.

Rumor has it the last truck still in service that responded to the WTC is about to be replaced by the first ferrara rearmount.

The fastest way into 911 per-diem is Transcare. Lennox Hill has been taken over by North Shore LIJ and they run their own ambulance fleet for their hospitals. No matter who you go with you have to do transport first. The hospitals pay the best so their retention is much better. Transcare has a much higher turnover so if you're flexible you'll be doing 911 quickly.

There are times to use sirens and times not to. The TBTA ask you to only use them when necessary and especially when not entering the toll plaza. It traffic is packed or flowing they're not practical, but when traffic slowed especially by gawkers it is useful.

Its hard enough to keep one boat funded and maintained. We don't need another out there.

No Dodges in service yet. Apparently in the next few weeks they should actually start rolling out. The Marine 1 boat is Marine 1 Alpha. Same boat as the PD version just different features.

I'm seeing BiPAP used more and more for COPD in the ERs. It surprised me as I figured air trapping plus increased airway pressure would equal barotrauma, but the real benefit is with acute exacerbation and providing support for tired veintilatory muscles.

skme is spot on. A few weeks ago coming down the taconic at night in the rain I came upon a trooper that had pulled a car over or was blocking for a disabled vehicle in the left lane. Between being nearly blinded by the blue lights, the rain, and the unexpected left side parking spot mid curve I very nearly rode right into the back of the trooper because I had absolutely no idea where the road was. I couldn't see the road markings, guardrail, or anything past the trooper to help me gain my bearings. By the time I figured out what the was going on rather than giving the trooper my usual wide berth it looked more like I was trying to take a mirror off. Too many lights ARE DANGEROUS! I have no idea if CFFD's lighting package is too bright, I haven't seen it. However the idea that more lights is more gooder needs to stop.

We get it, there is a massive amount of redundancy in the fire service too. Start a thread about that. Instead of getting your feelings hurt over law enforcement being attacked why not offer an explanation as to why every PD needs to be out there doing these checks or even better throw in a suggestion as to how you would fix it. We need the large law enforcement presence on the river. When something bad happens out there all of these resources will be needed. Rather than having 20 different agencies doing the same thing 20 times over, why not coordinate? Today depts A and B will be doing one thing. Depts C and D take on a different assignment. If that's too much sharing for all the little fiefdoms how about a central database of all the boats stopped. Before harassing someone you check in to see if they've been inspected today.

Report said nothing about CPAP. Oxygen powered systems are only going to deliver 100% O2, but hospital based electric systems can meter out a desired O2 concentration.

Rayrider is absolutely right. There is so much overlapping redundancy that it has become a nuisance. Imagine if every weekend every police agency along 9A was going to run a checkpoint. No one would tolerate it. Wave runners definitely draw more attention because of their peers however even a 32' Whaler with 4 adults earned 3 "safety checks" in 5 hours including 1 while anchored. They need to find a way to coordinate with each other.

I've been going back through the articles covering this case and none of them indicate that the race question is mandatory. It is by all indications still optional. The change the judge asked for was a language change that indicates to the applicant an intent to falsify the race response will result in disqualification. So far the city has aggressively and successfully resisted the judges demand for a quota based hiring process. While these test may be dumbed down all hiring decisions will be based upon your score and nothing else.

VF has the stronger lobby. Its no surprise.

Find me a single story of a child predator using a tot finder decal. Most children are attacked by someone they already know. The real problem is no one ever took them down. My neighbors house had them from when the kids were babies. They grew up and moved out but the stickers never came down. They finally came down when a new family with young children moved in. Go figure.

The judge ordered that anyone found to be lying about their race be automatically disqualified. I have not seen anything where the judge ordered this section to be mandatory, as it has always been optional in the past. On a happier note ... Firefighter Exam Notice

Notice how all older members are saying Teens usually do not have the experience or maturity to operate a large emergency vehicle?? Its because we all were at one time the young guys chomping at the bit to get in there and were absolutely convinced that we were ready. Its only later when you realize how unprepared you really were. I am a huge advocate for Juinor Corps and young member involvement, but there are some things you just need to be around for a while before you're ready for them. Its a fact that teens are involved in proportionally more serious accidents than anyone else and almost as many accidents as the elderly. You can cite examples of this guy in XYZ FD or the military but one is a unique case and often a result of desperation rather than choice and the other is someone that is intensively trained and molded into a mature experienced person beyond their years.
