If the heat persists then the fire is not out. This is why you leave someone on fire watch when you are unable to effectively overhaul a structure. A properly extinguished fire is exactly that, extinguished. The only place a rekindle makes sense is a mulch pile.

How many home owners realize that they're in a non-hydrant area? Of those that do, how many know what exactly that means for their fire protection? My father is an educated man rarely completely ignorant of a subject. He long ago realized that in the event of a fire if it goes beyond that first room he prefered it burn to the ground to save him on demolition and waste hauling costs. He was also well aware of the pitfalls of volunteer fire protection and had his home well insured. This was all many years before I became a volley. The one consolation he took was there is a hydrant 50' from our propety. Only after I joined the local FD did we find out how useless that hydrant was. The point to this ramble is the average home owner has no idea. They see an FD full of trucks a few blocks away and assume they're protected. Since FDs are the last to advertise their ineptitude who is going to tell the homeowners they're on their own?

Its happened to other cities and counties. Politicians refusing to make hard choices, bad bets, and tough economics can quickly sink a fagile budget. Yonkers is close to being taken over by the state, Nassau is run by NYS, and a multitude of towns cities, and counties across the country are in similar positions.

Greenburgh is even more progressive in their medics are dedicated to EMS. There is no chance they won't be available because they're on a car stop or other non-ems call. Their medics are also available 24/7. Whitehall has two and are hoping for a third that is available whenever they happen to be on duty? That's not really a service worth bragging about.
-
Not at all unique or different from Westchester. Greenburgh PD has been providing ALSFR and BLS ambulances for as long as I can remember.

Because children in the cabin are not required to wear pfds.

How can the grant be used "effectively in the volunteer sector"? I have yet to see anything that definitively improves recruitment or retention in volunteers. Truth be told I don't see much evidence of any improved retention with the programs often advertised to fix these problems.

Good luck with limited duty cops. Our selection of EMTs aren't much better. Hire people that want the job and pay enough to get quality hires. Our CROs and dispatchers are so inefficient there has got to be a better way. Just last night, 3 calls for Union Square W and 16th, 16th st, and 16th and Broadway. Shockingly they were all for the same person! Then the winner on the mic tried to insist West St was right there and we should check to see if that's also the same job.

I believe he is talking about the FDNY's new modified start triage. The orange tag makes sense administratively, but in application it is unnecessary and redundant.
-
Triage tags are a state requirement and I believe one of the few items carried on every DOH certified vehicle. I stand corrected. There is no requirement to carry triage tags. FDNYs new modified start triage is state approved for ise by any agency. I know we've given our training materials to a few outside agencies but don't know if any have followed through.

Are they using a true back flow prevention device or just a simple flap valve or similar device?

None of us need that extra crap. We still have to get there, so you can add all of that along the way. "Pt mle 60 yrs can't breeth" is all I need to start going. If along the way you want to tell me he's 'coofing flem, 'wheezeling', 'dissy', 'has the sugar', or whatever else can be gleaned from the caller and scrambled by the CRO, thats great. I'd still rather have someone with zero medical training but 8th grade reading level following the EMD cards and updating me.

JBE, I read the edited version. Never saw the full. One thing that kills me with communications is we have a group of people that handle calls efficiently, with extremely few errors, and have repeatedly been recognized for their competence and performance. The fire dispatchers do their job extremely well. It would be cheaper to properly compensate and train 1 person to take these calls than with the current system of teo people. Not mention the time saved with getting the proper resources going to the proper address. Most if the gripes with the system are not fire, ems, or PD specific. Its simple things like correct addresses and actually listening and interpreting what the caller says. "Mle caller sts was jumped under train" is not a trauma call requiring engines, ladders, a squad, rescue, bls, als, ESU, transit, and a handfull of supervisors. It was a male assaulted that needed an RMP and BLS.

The system could easily function in its current form if the city would just invest in proper training for the call takers and get the proper dispatch software. Get a call type and location and the call should be handled by the proper dispatchers. My GPS can figure out that when I'm in manhattan and type 34 & broadway I'm probably looking for E 34 & Broadway in Manhattan. The system needs to integrate with cell phone gps cootdinates and not just list them in the call text. Then when an address doesn't come close to the call location it can be double checked. Like the Trauma at e 13 and 3rd av yesterday was a typo that should have read e 103 and 3rd av. The cell tower was on 104th st.

HFD, there is no requirement for management to continue the terms of the contract. They could revert to minimum wage and dump all benefits until the terms of the next contract are worked out. Triborough was added to the Taylor law after it was discovered that once the contract expired it could be argued the taylor law no longer applied. Triborough allows time for negotiations and the arbitration process.

How would you feel is she was running around with a bullhorn announcing the police were prepping for a felony arrest raid? She wants to hold up signs against radar, go right ahead. She wants to protest heavy handed tactics employed by some police agencies, I'm right with her. Her actions were directly impeding the ability of the police to do their job.

Then there was the strangulation high and hyperventilation high that was going to kill America's youth 10 or 15 years ago. At least this one has very little risk of death or debilitating injury. I say let these kids be stupid and let the burns be the mark of the idiot.

Why do I get the feeling this had something to do with his early and sudden exit.

The chief has an excellent point. My former VFD held an annual fund drive every year and that money was divided amongst the companies. None of the donors knew where this money was going but I'm sure the majority thought it was operations. I have no qualms with the way my company spent its money and would have been confident opening the books to the public. How many others can say the same? Do you think the average tax payer would really be OK sending their volleys to lake george for a weekend? Buying food for a drill or taking your members out for a reasonable annual dinner are fair reward. Sending them somewhere for pertinent training not available locally great idea. Providing a lounge, bunkroom, kitchen, or gym all can be reasonable and justifiable. 50" plasma with movie theater seating and a viking commercial kitchen kind of excessive. If you think the Chief is picking on volleys open your books up to the public. Next time you're raising money include a break down last years expenditures.

I really doubt the officer saw the sign and decided she was getting hauled off. In my experience there's usually an exchange initiated by the officer asking the person to stop interfering with THEIR JOB. Other than NYPD highway cops I've never met an officer that enjoyed running traffic stops. Also never heard of someone aspiring to be a cop so they could catch speeders for 20 years. Often times officers are assigned to a traffic detail or encouraged to catch more VTL violators. Why wouldn't you just comply with a cop doing the job you as the tax payer hired them to do?
-
What about the fund drive money? Thats a substantial amount that gets no scrutiny.

District books are open, but company books are not. When the district cuts the company a check there is no longer any accountability.

If you are uninsured/under insured but working full time this law is a very big deal. Same for any business employing more than 50 people that doesn't currently provide health insurance. Sadly, for all the hype this law will have no major impact on the majority of Americans.
