  1. another fun little road block is the new cars with pencil sized A Posts. They're made of high stength metal alloys. If you try and cut them you will break your tool.
  2. europizza has a sister store in Millwood across from Rockys. I believe its also called europizza
  3. engine235 any sentiments and words you have to share about Pirro she deserves. We still have an unsolved murder of a FF that she won't acknowledge. I have quite a few choice words and desires for her future that I would love to share with her.
  4. find me a kid who wants to grow up and ride on the big blue/green/lavander/perrywinkle fire truck. Its all about the big red fire truck. Red has alot going for it. Its the color of Mars the war god (we "fight" fires). Red is also associated with vigor, willpower, leadership, courage, valor, pride, and bravery. Lastly red is also a universally known as representing danger and stop. So come now all you depts out there eith your "unique" color schemes come on and join the cool kids. I'll buy the spray paint and we can fix this problem
  5. I can't speak for Ferg, but I'm sure we could liberate something from Pleasantville to add to the collection
  6. The $1000 per covers retrofitting existing gear, new harneses, and the costs of providing training for the firefighters.
  7. uhh ohh...designed and using FDNY facilites and equipment...when this thing takes off in other cities where's the money going to go?
  8. Some people are still looking at this like its an indirect attack where you open up the fog into the space and steam up the room. In that case, yeah anythign in there is dead..fire, victims, and fiefighters. The 3-D method uses a very short burst of fog that does not disturb the thermal balance, does not inject a large volume of air. It is also not used to extinguish the fire. it is only used to improve the conditions to facilitate your direct attack. In a situation where you begin to see signs of flashover or roll over what do you do....You bounce the stream off the celing so that the now broken stream and droplents that fall to teh ground can remove some heat form that environment. The 3-D methond does the same thing just more efficiently.
  9. o know there are few members more knowledgeable when it comes to the strengths and weaknesses of apperatus, but from what I understand, the FDNY ferrara's ahve been holding their own both chassis and bodies. Also, I believe the sattelites are ferrara bodies on macks. As for pierce...just like PVFD said they aren't waht tehy use to be. Simple things like the manufacure process for their chassis, the wirring, the attachment methods they use at certain critical junctions just don't compare to what other companies are doing. I don't believe price is the big factor. Other compnaies build for less. Besides, if you want to keep a company from winning an open bid there are many ways to go about doing is. Ferrara rigth now is just giving alot of people the best truck for their mopney right now.
  10. WOW. I this article has really struck a nerve. I've done alot of reading on this and from what I can see it works. He wasn't necisarially referring to dueling handline for two reasons...In my experiance rarely do the garage door and and house access oppose each other. They are most often perpendicular to each other. Secondly. In their situation the door is only open for 2 to 3 seconds at a time. When the second line is operating you don't open the door. This comparison applys to situations without adequate ventillation. A very realistic situation considering the manpower problems affecting many of our depts. With proper ventillation you remove the key element of 3-D firefighting...volatile super heated gases. This is not an indirect attack. An indirect attack utillises the application of large amounds of fog from an exterior position. This method uses a small amount of fog precisely applied. Can work is an excellent example of something that we all ready practice that is very simmilar to 3-D. You can use a straight stream and bounce it off a celing and get results as far a** mittigating risks possed by super heated combustible gases. The 3-D technique just works better when done properly. How can you say the authors statement about FD progress is wrong. WE are outrageously slow at adapting new technologies. To say other wise is to be ignorant of the history of the fire service. After all of this I have to admit, I am still a major proponent of the smooth bore. Considering the inconsistancy of trainign and experiance in the volunteer fire service I firmly believe in the K.I.S.S. method of firefigting. I can only speak for my dept., but if we saw alot more work and/or had the time and resources to get a whole lot more training in a a REAL fire environment I would be in favor of 3-D. There is just too many way to F up and kill someone
  11. they work until you hit a deer. Its the kind of thing that if it works, you won't notice it. All though, I have seen one car with them that was sporting some fur and a nice trail of deer snot and blood frozen down the side. So you be the judge.
  12. No, we really do try to...my guess is its some kind of inferiority complex...some kind of longing for acceptance and love. Besides, its Fergs first parade and I've got $20 on a tornado/three alarm blaze combo.
  13. Pasqualonis in Thronwood...every egg sandwich is dbl egg and a Bacon egg and cheese with a large coffee is about $4. Where can you beat that?
  14. Thats one of the many reasons these hospitals suffer so hard. Covering the expenses of the poor, running communtiy health programs and free clinics along with insurance fees and legal expenses generated by our littigation happy society running a hospital is outrageously expensive. The WMC also has its own unique problems; the bill collection dept for example was all but useless untill recently and services that were not generating money, ie: liver transplants, have all compunded the situation
  15. the only time waxing is a concern is after painting...in that case do what the guy who applied the paint tells you to....trust me, I didn't.
  16. Its sickening how much it costs to do work in the city. If it was a private job away from govt excess the job would still easilly run in excess of 60k each. Them union boys are expensive.
  17. The state has been asked to help and has a bail out package ready. They are just waiting to see if the hospital can stay out the red if they were to get the money. No sense in giving them money if its not going to help out in the end.
  18. Its just too bad the pages don't come faster. It'd be nice to not have to carry the pager and just use the Nextel
  19. AS far as I've been told, White Plains has the best Neurology dept. in the county. Anyone have any facts or to confirm or correct this?
  20. chiefs have personal CO and there's a mulit gas in HQ...that way no worries about it not being on the rig that goes to the call. Every time you get off the rig, if you don't know for sure you won't need it, you should have your scba
  21. I hear all of these problems that everyone is suffereing, and I smile...when the III's first came out, people were all most fighting for 'em. Then the IV's came out and everyone was all about them. I have kept my II and will never give it up. And now with the new V's comming out, everyone out there who still has a II, read all of these stories and trust me...hold on to that pager. Hide it, say you lost it, burry it in your back yard. What ever it takes keep you pager. Maybe by the time we reach the Minitor XVII it will work.
  22. the empire state building is built using entirely different methods. You could not build something the size of the towers that way. There is not a building in the world that could stand up in those conditions. You have to remember that the buildings survived the impacts and performed as designed. It was the extensive fire coupled with the massive structural damage that brought them to the ground. The is no way to build a tower to survive that kind of impact. You can only engineer them to allow more time for evacuation and rescue.
  23. No matter what you use...plain english or 10 codes there will allways be confussion and missunderstanding. There has to be a published list of codes or terms that has tobe sent out to everyone
  24. roeems87, you are absolutly correct in everythign you have said. This has been comming for several years now. As for the previously mentioned seinfeld reference, it has been an in creasing problem where people are refusing or at the very least hesitating before proving mouth to mouth for fear of disease transmission and the all ways mature...eeeww I don't wan't to put my mouth on someone else.
