  2. The twelve firefighters to rescue one firefighter number thats being thrown around here came from an after incident report in Arizona (phoenix I believe). They found that for each downed firefighter they rescued there were at least 12 other firefighters directly involved in the rescue. If anyone wants more info they can PM me and I'll dig it up for them.
  3. DC f'ing rocks. The girls are hot without the attitude of the girls in the city. M street in Georgetown (just like ALS said) is the place to be.
  4. Don't worry slacker, I'll make sure the airhorns and q siren are cranked just for you.
  5. And lets not forget the light bar. The Whelen Delta - Kenny edition
  6. You are correct grumpy, we will now have a speedy dry schute. Now along with hose and air packs we can also distribute speedy along the road on our way to the fire It also has the added advantage of allowing us to leave a trail for you to follow to the fire when you finally get down from the sticks to break in the new trucks.
  7. All right we all agree one ff isn't enough. Why did it take 10 minutes for more apperatus and ff's to arrive. Aren't there other apparatus assigned to the alarm? And if its a combo dept why didn't any volleys show up in the first 10 minutes? Maybe you can explain this EMSjunkie.
  8. A coupe of people have hit on this all ready, the vast majority of the injuries suffered by ff's durring a fall are from the things we land on. Most of our neck and back injuries sustained durring a fall come from landing on our scba.
  9. Can't stand foam blocks. The only way to get them tight enough or to stay is to use them on a dead patient. Velcro head blocks work best, but the headbed is great for ease of maintenance.
  10. Get far enough back to where you think you're safe, then double it. If someone gets hurt let those responsible for securing the scene bring them to you. Meth labs are a hazmat incidnet. Hot, warm and cold zones should be in effect
  11. In thornwood, I believe engine 88 is actually a regect from FDNY.
  12. December 30, 2005 -- The FDNY's rank and file yesterday overwhelmingly approved a contract agreement between their union and the city. "The agreement not only provides our firefighters a wage increase, but, most significantly, it serves to enhance public and firefighter safety for the next half a decade," said Uniformed Firefighters Association President Steve Cassidy. The 50-month contract guarantees a 17 percent pay hike over 50 months, and is expected to cost the city an additional $168 million by next year. The agreement, announced last October, has already been approved by union brass and Bravest delegates. Yesterday, firefighters took the final step and ratified the agreement, with 86 percent in support of the contract — 6,094 in favor and 829 against.
  13. I'm in the middle of this mess right now. Call them up get on the provisional hire list. A few months later you will get a letter notifying you of your physical. After that You get placed on a list depending on your score on you rphysical. Then tahy work their way down the list. It took about a year for me to getthrough to the physical. Once you do get through the physical, stay on them with phone calls about your status. They have twice now screwed up my information and I was left out of the last class because of it. Some how my EMT cert expiration was changed to a different month in a diiferent year.
  14. The area immediately infront of and around the collum of water comming from a hose carries alot of very turnulent air. That air actually strikes the saw dust first and ejects it into the air. This creates the conditions requires for the explosive ignition of the saw dust. Its the same forces that make hydraulic ventilation work. The two way I was tough to extinguish these types of fire are either with a very wide fog at very low pressure (almost like a sprinkler head) or with a large volume at low pressure (take the nozzle off and drop the line in the hopper).
  15. Many people have put alot of work into creating and excellent and very important tool for us to use, for that I thank everyone involved. But as others have pointed out there isone area we are lacking. Constructive critiquing of incidents. If we can't disscus our mistakes then we will never learn from them and will be doomed to repeat them.
  16. If you want to stay away from transports the way to go is transcare and westchester ems fly cars. You only ride calls that you deem necessary and unless you are on an ALS transport bus you might do one transport in a great while. I don't know much about Empress ALS from what I understand they only have supervisor fly cars and ALS buses(correct me if I'm wrong).
  17. Too bad pleasatville gave up the Hays Hose horn. Now a good chucnk of the town can only hear the horn on a clear and quiet night. I can think of dozens of times where it was the horns that alerted me to an alarm.
  18. face piece in the jacket is one of those tricks the older guys usually pass down. Another all too obvious one is move your bottle changing and rehab station inside an enclosed apparatus durring the winter. Every winter alarm I've been at I've seen guys trying to melt ice off a scott pack with their bare hands.
  19. there are some depts that have arranged low cost housing for members contigent on certain FD related responsiblities. Maybe someone could help fill in the details on this.
  20. THis topic has drifted over into skills training when the article is about reducing line of duty death in NY. "Maybe the easiest way to cut down on the deaths would be to require more physical-fitness training, said Byrnes and Thomas LaBelle, executive director of the state Fire Chiefs Association." This says it all right here. Guys are still dropping from cardiac and other health related problems more than anything else on the fire gound. Addd to that the fact that most mistakes occur after fatigue has set in and it all points to better physical condioning.
  21. It is absolutely a promotion. Better pay and better working conditions. No one said it was a more technically challenging postion. Just a more desirable one. And by desirable I am going by the thousands who apply every 4 years for the fire exam compared to the hundreds who sign up for the EMS exams.
  22. None. There is no specified diffference between the two. The difference comes from a tower ladder having a platform mounted to the end of the ladder. Actually you will usually find "sticks" (straight ladders) longer than towers since there is less weight at the tip and you can fit more ladder into the same amount of space.
  23. To be left alone tied up and then fall on your face. While funny as hell, entirely too f-ed up. I am the first to b**** about voer zeleous lawsuits, but this guy deserves what ever he can get out of court.
  24. The flashover simulator in Rockland (a must use for everyone) is made from shipping containers.
