  1. The three vehicles they have are really impressive. High speed on land and water. While not every dept will need one, they could do alot for the right depts
  2. I find it interesting that alot of people just write this problem off to a lack of experiance, and just leave it at that. In many depts in our area that experiance is just not going to come in time. Fires are down and our experianced members are getting older and moving on. So the next best thing is training. Training is great, and way too many people need more of it, but I don't care how many classes you take or how many hours you spend in training fires when the sh!t hits the fan people react differently. The sensory over load you get from a ripping fire is more than enough to phase someone. So if the biggest mistake an officer makes is to call out half the county for a 15 minute knockdown then I'm happy. Sorry about the rambling, but this seems like a problem that attempting to fix could create a more serious problem of under staffing jobs.
  3. they've been available at places like Sam's club and BJ for a while now.
  4. Too bad they're not. EMS consistantly ranks tops in all jobs for Post Traumatic Stress (far above even combat soldiers) near the top for suicide, and amongst the bottom for years served in the field. Our brothers and sisters burn out at an extrordinary rate. At the end of the day FF's are together at the house talking, shooting the s***, whatever. There is also no one out there that can even come close to the back patting and atta boys handed out by ff's. Add to that the blind faith they have to have in eachother and you wind up with a very close group that works hard to care for their own. Sadly, in EMS we spend our entire day posted out in the middle of town stuck with our partner. And if we work with any onter crews its for a few minutes before we takeoff with our Pt and back into isolation. Then come the end of the day we clock out and we're on our way home. We don't have the opportunities fire has to just talk with each other. Until we find a way to eliminate that isolation we will continue down the same path we currently follow.
  5. I am a huge fan of FD and EMS being united. First, there are many things we in EMS could stand to learn from fire as far as brotherhood, teamwork, and taking care of our own. While forcing FF's to handle EMS is a bad idea, FD response with EMS to certain call types can be hugely productive. Ideally you can keep the two as separate entities within the same organization. In calls with the greatest threats to life seconds count and a two man crew is never enough. Throw a couple of FF's trained at least to CFR or even better EMT-B on the scene and they are an extra set of trained hands. Because lets face it there never has been and there never will be enough EMS units on the road. There are also many situations where ff's have their hands on our pt's before we do(MVA's, Fires, Collapse's, etc) FF's with at least an awareness of what to do to care for the sick an injured makes our job that much easier.
  6. Federal is very leniant. Volly's are exempt, and it covers you for a few years not sure how many though. Students away at school get sent to the bottom of the next list. State is whole different story. No matter who you are or what you do, you are allowed to defer for a few months and are then required to take whatever date they have available. All though when you defer you are able to subit a time span that you are available.
  7. Its pleasantville. We're infamous for life threatening storms in the middle of the march.
  8. FDNY can rock the legs so long as the bunkers are on durring a call.
  9. Double check the link. It is set up for a second boarded pt. The down side is it requires the 2nd pt to be faced teh other way - head to the door.
  10. Applications will be available from the website as soon as the filling period opens. There are also locations that you can go to to pick up apps. And if thats not enough, you can even call and have them send you an app. But they won't do a thing for you till the filling period starts.
  11. The truth of the matter is, in 2006 it is firefighters who put fires out. Richmond is showing up with more equipment and more manpower on the first alarm now, but how many are showing up on the second and thrid alarms?? Does this new set-up reduce the number of multiple alarm fires? Does it reduce the damages caused by fire? For seven or more years now Richmond has been operating with this system in place, yet there is no mention on the site of an specific improvements made in their on the job performance.
  12. From what I usually see, CPR w/AED around $80 and refreshers $50
  13. Do any major Cities run an ALS flycar system like we have here in Westchetser? Seems it could be a more efficient method for distributing medics to ture emergencies.
  14. Not just the wording, get the singantures on there too. Copy of the DNR is sufficient, so the tatoo should work...as for the notary, never seen it and I've seen dozens and dozens of DNRs
  15. Even if you're rolling out with 4 man engines and are runnign off tanker shuttles a 2 1/2 with a smotth bore is still a very effective tool that isn't used enough (IMHO)
  16. NYS is very clear. If they don't explicitly approve it, you can consider it invalid. F-ing scooter stole my idea. You get a full DNY tattooed on the body, it may be acceptable. NYC went to court a few years ago because NH's would have them in all sorts of different styles. The state said that so long as the right info was there they didn't care what it was printed on. That could be applied to the human body.
  17. The state approved the use of glucometers months ago. From there its is up to each region to develop their own procedures and policies for the agencies to follow. As of yet I haven't heard of anythign from Westchester.
  18. I don't care what you add to these cars people are still gonna slam into them. People crash into scenes durring the day, covered in fire apparatus, whatever. People see flashing lights and they lose their minds. The only lighting sceme shown to reduce accidents is all amber. People associate amber with construction areas and aren't interested by it.
  19. While I am all for idiot proofing this job, we've gotta be able to do something as simple as looking for obvious hazards. If we are able to identify construction type from down the block in 5 seconds, then we should definately be able to ID obvious hazards like window A\Cs.
  20. GPS isn't accurate enough (especially vertically) for effective use in structural firefighting. Worchester Polytech is working on a radio location system using antenna's mounted on the fire apparatus. Then as more vehicles arrive and are positioned around the scene the locations become more accurate in all three dimenssions. With as few as three vehicles you can have positions down to within 3ft. There are even portable recievers that can be used at larger incidents or taller buildings. If the building is mapped ahead of time you superimpose the locations over images of the floor plan. If the building isn't mapped the system tracks paths of travel used and develops an image of accessable areas. Its very impressive and should be rolling within the next 5 yrs.
  21. Its only to be used in engines specifically designed to run on the mix. You will ruin a normal engine by using it.
  22. Can you blame them for filming elsewher; about a year or so ago an FDNY probie got drunk stole a truck and actually crashed it into a scene they were preparing to film. Movies are a business. they film whats necessary on location and film teh rest where they can get the most bang for their buck. If I'm not mistaken Flight 93 was filmed in England.
  23. The US doesn't need to import ethanol. We have the raw material (corn) and the ability to increase production. Many of the now deffunct beer processors are being turned into ethanol producers. Our biggest problem is cost effectivness. As demand and production increase the cost will drop.
  24. I have no idea what the distance was, but there is now a federal law prohibiting demonstrations within a certain distance of a funeral or memorial service.
  25. More important than that clown and her church, check out the response to her protests. Across the country groups of bikers have been showing up to funnerals and blocking out the protesters with flags and banners and the drown out the chants with their bikes. The bikers are mostly Veterans and show up in huge numbers at the slightest rumor that their might be protests. Its an impressive sight.
