  1. excellent, that site is perfect. Thank you

  3. Anyone who is thinking of getting phios, look into committing to tv now. I'm saving %10 and will get phios tv for three months(I think) free once it becomes available. TV is allegedly begining early '07 and you pay per channel. No more forced packages.
  4. cheap and disposable...garrity. If it melts, gets stolen, or gets lost you don't care. bright, penetrating, and long lasting...pelican or stream light LED. $20 - $40 and pelican gives lifetime guarentees on everything but the batteries on their LED lights.
  5. You want someone who is experianced and well practiced to be your medic. Not just a guy who took the classes a few months ago. Same would go for the guys on the entry team. You don't want a medic who went through a few training evolutions on point.
  6. Fines for missed events (when they were actually enforced) were only levied if you didn't notify someone you would not be able to attend. Even though we're volunteer, its still a service that we provide and a job we are tasked to do. This just serves as some form of accountability.
  7. Driver is all ready exiting on that side of the vehicle. You are furthest out into traffic when exiting and entering the vehicle. If it really is that bad, first you sholdn't be on the road and secondly, you can allways place the chocks on the other side. It doesn't take more than a few seconds to remove the chocks from where they are stored.
  8. In one court I know of, this is working out very well for the mototists. The prosecutor will be gathering all of the offenders for each type of violation together. Depending on how buisy the court is the lowest offenses are going to be sent packing, with automatic plea delas accross the board to entice people to sign now and walk away. They are going to try and keep their case load close to what it was before unless the state approves more prosecutors.
  9. Funny you should menton that. If you're up against the death penalty, not only will France not deport you until you are guarenteed no death penalty, but they'll even grant you assylum and eventually citizenship. Viva la ribbit
  10. The booms are for he fuel. You're gonna need oreos and grahm crackers to contain it. Once it reaches the water, it'll just mix, as milk is mostly water.
  11. This seems pretty simple to me...if surviveair was negligent in publishing and/or fixing a known problem then these people deserve every penny they can get. If however the rquipmnt was not deffective or this is a new undocumanted flaw, then this suit should be thrown out immediately.
  12. All right, I'll try and be a little more clear. I am not advocating stripping their manpower to the point of compromising the pubic's safety. Just reducing redundancy and waste reguardless how tall or fat they may be.
  13. fire fighting is no different than any other profession. You can practice it till you're blue in the face, but you don't get good at it unless you do it. Having guys sitting around doing nothing is dangerous because it breeds complacancy. Guys take trainning less seriously, they don't stay in shape, and they lose those intangibles that you only get doing the real thing; that sixth sense that so often inexplicibly gets guys out before they get hurt. So what does that tell you. Having 30+ ff's on scene with the first alarm and hundred more at a momens notice isn't enough. Even at the biggest emergencies, they still have dozens and dozens of guy standing there with nothing to do, actually becoming a hinderance. At the Manhattan building collapse how many were involved in the search and rescue and how many stood-by? How about the Bronx collapse? While it had no affect on pt care in the end do you have any idea how hard it was for EMS to get their equipment where it needed to be. Its not the ff's fault, they are all dying to get in there and help their brothers, but people had to fight through a sea of ff's to get anywhere. Thats why the FD has to work with the city and make sure the people they are trying to protect are not forgotten. Get an independant analyst in there and make sure that if they have to give up hoses then those who need the protection most will get it. And about the smoke detectors...yeah they do reduce major fires, fatalities, and injuries. So why don't they push smoke detectors on every residence. Thats a riddiculous point. It's called risk vs reward. You, me and everyone around us make those decisions a thousand times a day. Do you drive the safest car money can buy? Is your house fully sprinklered with smoke and CO detectors in every room? Do you drive more than 5 or 10 mph? So now you're saying I'm being silly and exaggerating. Every medication you take kills a certain percent of the people who take it. Have you ever run a light, sped, or drove with a drink or two more in you than you would have liked to. When OSHA sets forth guidelines for contaminant and risk exposure they are looking at the cost of implementation vs the number of lives saved and injuries prevented. You pull up to a fire and the family tells you that their son or daughter is still inside just as the living room flashes and the whole house goues up. Are you sending the truck company in through that inferno to pull out a body? Every day we make decisions that could eventually cost someone their life.
  14. How about that Fertilizer (I think it was fertilizer) plant in the Bronx that went up a day or two later. The IC was asking for then to just send what ever they could get their hands on. Eventually started sending westchester units if I remember correctly. Anyone remember who went?
  15. Why is it as soon as you suggest downsizing the FD you become labeled crazy and an idiot. Today you don't need as many ff's to fight a fire as you did 30 yrs ago. We have better tools and equipment that allow us to work longer and more efficiently. We also don't have the fire load we did; forget nation wide, but in cities like NY and Philly. When you have companies going first due to one or two fires a year that use to go to 10 to 15 then you need to realize that things have changed and so must the FD. In most smaller cities arround the tri-state area ff's are making multiple evolutions into a building for extinguishment. You can ask any of them if they deem that to be excessive, and they will say no. In NYC, its a minor miracle for a crew to go back in a second time. I'm not advocating stripping FD's of their manpower and compromising anyone's safety, but there is alot of room between an engine and a truck on every block and 20 minute reponse times for the second due. And you you know what, asside from saving money you're giving ff's the single most important tool in their arsenal...experiance. Everyone knows, training is important and irreplacable, but nothing can touch the real thing. Now that we've saved some money, what about using it to install 3-D mapping technology to determine a ff's exact loaction when they hit that mayday. Heck the system will even show you the ff's route. Or maybe to bolster the pension system. Money has to come from somewhere, and maybe if we're active and cooperative in this process we can make sure the savings end up helping us out instead of being funneled off to fix ot holes or cover the pol's pay hikes.
  16. He is absolutely correct. While nothing would make me happier than mass ff hirings in New York, the city, just like Philly needs to shrink the FD. The only catch is, that money needs to be reinvested into Emergency Services. EMS is horribly underfunded and its members under paid in nearly every city I've looked at. And I don't think there's a mjor city in the world that wouldn't benefit from more police officers.
  17. The crooks that were the focus of the story will get what they deserve and the reporter got a good thumping. As for the camera man not stopping, two things. You have a tendancy to become detached from what your viewing and you become focused on shooting. Also, the camera ops and reporters offten don't get along and would be happy filming the beating. Besides, that footage is gonna make the assault case a slam dunk.
  18. If you're thinking about this, check wether or not the time restrictions on the foreign income applies. Usually you are required to remain outside the country for a certain number of days out of the year. I don't remember what it was exactly, but its alot.
  19. Hate to nit pick, but is it really construction workers trying to kill ff's. I'm sure the carpenters and steel workers are out there doing this for shits and giggles. How about blaming the people responsible; the project managers and property owners.
  20. excellent tool, but is it true its only being used on viable pt's?? Rumor has it that was the order issued with the devices.
  21. The city had a system like that. They were the super pumpers, massive pump with a hose tender. After years of occasional use the city decided it wasn't worth it and dropped them from service.
  22. this reporter got what he deserved. Nearly everyone involved in this deserve an a** whipping. These reporters are constantly harrassing people and think they are above it all just because they have a camera. And while often the people they are after are trash, it is not the role of these clowns to convict people of these crimes. Every once in a while a story comes out about these investigative reports being false or misdirected and there are no repercussions or accountability. Besides, watching the behavior of these people, its obvious that its escalating and the reporter continues to provoke a reaction out of them. He got it and I hope he enjoyed it.
  23. EWFAC or JBE...any comment??
  24. How is parity illegal?? It is a common practice in seveal cities amongst its uniformed services personel.
  25. I agree with ALS. Fire and EMS working together best serves the needs of the public. Forcible entry, extrication, technical rescue, and just extra hands are all best provided by fire. On top of this, every fire emergency has a significant potential for creating patients. In my opinion, FDNY is actually on the right track. Below chief of the dept fire and EMS have completely seperate leadership. So long as the two stay seperate and they stop trying to move EMS into fire houses and don't try and make ff's ride ambulances the system actually has a good chance.
