If that was a attic fire then it was a good move.  What ever that was it wasn't really well attached to the rest of the house.  Imeadiate results too.

How does this affect your organization?  What preparation needs to be done in advance?  Is this a negative or a positive?

Today, I had to move a member to the "Answered Final Alarm" group. I found out a friend, member of this forum, and EMTBravo advertiser/sponsor Ed Simione, AKA "Officer Ed", passed away after a long and difficult battle with cancer. Although I've never met Ed in person, we've maintained a friendship online and corresponded. We have had some common ground.

Ed was a retired Police Officer in Arizona, and also a volunteer firefighter. He worked as an officer in Narcotics Interdiction, and as a Narcotics Detective in the Phoenix area. In his retirement after an on the job injury, he operated an emergency lighting business, Dash Flash, which his mission was to provide emergency lighting to those who have to buy their own equipment at an affordable price . He has been an advertiser/sponsor of this site for several years, and has given EMTBravo members significant discounts on his products.  He was an advertiser on this site. Since there are so many fly by night LED light companies, He sent me some to demo so I could vet him. His products were solid. I gave the demos to friends who could use them, and they are holding up nicely in busy enviroments. I've spoken with his daughter, and her and his wife intend to keep the business going. He was also  an active member on this forum, logging in almost every day.

RIP, Ed. I'll continue my mission to help raise cancer awareness. Feel bad I didn't write you sooner. Thank you for all you've done for this forum. Condolences to Cheryl, his wife. Thoughts and prayers.

This was his last post, responding to a post I made about this site:

A little blast from the past here, 14 years ago. Former Forum Admin Truck 4 produced this awesome feature and there are no words I can say of how appreciative of him for this. 2004 was a busy and tragic year in Westchester.  Links in the Incident Alert dicussion thread do not work but I will update those soon. Click on the links to view the Incident Alert. I'm proud that we have a searchable database of 14 years worth of topics that you can research.

I don't see Mount Vernon as ever being properly staffed or equipped.
A large portion of the city is rented, and the property owners don't live in the city. When a structure burns down, it's considered "urban renewal" to the City. Fire Protection has not been a priority for the city for decades. The same problems come up over and over again. When I Google'd articles about Mount Vernon Fire Department in the Journal News/Reporter Dispatch/Daily Argus and NY Times, the same problems just repeat year after year.
It's sad, because there are a lot of guys in Mount Vernon who are passionate about firefighting, and are excellent firefighters. With the right leadership (on the City level), they have enormous potential. But it seems whenever they start getting traction on an issue, something comes up. The negative publicity seems to be endless. The morale is terrible. The stations, equipment, and apparatus are in disrepair. The hiring practices don't ensure the best possible candidate, and a lot of the good ones try to transfer out, or wait patiently for retirement as soon as possible. Guys lose hope that they'll ever be promoted due to politics. With this, they lose talented guys, and the heritage of knowledge and experience that goes with it. The new generation is set up for failure from the moment they walk in the door.
The city doesn't truly care about economic development and the potential the city has, and has failed at every effort to attract real sustainable development , so they'll never have a solid tax base to pay for the aforementioned.
Even with proper funding, excellent leadership, and productive collaboration, these are issues that will take years, if not decades, to repair.

The Mayor of mt vernon figured out a way to save money. Instead of putting money into his fire budget he uses other town's or city's fire budget. He's ahead of his time and he thanks all.

It's all bull.... Put the correct amount of manpower on the job to supply adequate coverage for the taxpayers and to also protect each other. Stop relying on other cities to come in and help the short staffed dept. Do their job. What does it take to make a change a firefighter losing his life because carelessness and the lack of knowledge in the mayor's office... NOT RIGHT....

    1) So what agency or group enforces that agreement? Maybe a provision for suspending services where aid is no longer mutual?
    2) Again, I know next to nothing about NY laws, but I would wonder if an agency/municipality would be prevented from billing for services that are not requisite to their mission? While you wouldn't bill your own taxpayers, it might be considered billing for "contracted" services"? There must be some shared services amongst Towns and Villages that are contractually paid?
I would think (hope?) that any mutual aid MOU or other agreement would have some clauses about being a member department in good standing or something similar? I'd think looking at how that agreement is fulfilled or broken might be in order? Why not petition the agency that "holds" the agreement for a suspension of the offending FD? Or look at how to withdraw from an agreement that is so lopsided.
I suspect the politicians would seek another FD to provide aid if just one stopped or started billing, but if everyone agreed, it would allow for a response to help the other FD and their citizens, just at a cost. Then it would be up to a politician to say, "No, don't call for aid, we can't afford it."

It was a stretch comparing E82 to spring valley and 6 fires a year. As Far as the building code violations? It sounds pretty bad in spring valley but this sort of thing happens everywhere.

This guy stands by what he said. My post had no profanity, racism, crudeness, or anything that should be censored. Once again, I know that my posts my be extremely unpopular (esp. for an emergency services website). That said, it is important to express opinions in open, and uncensored forums (both positive and negative) so that law enforcement is aware how everyone views them and not just their supporters (I'm sure there are other people out there with varying, milder degrees of my extreme opinion). When we start to censor these ideas we threaten the free thinking ideas on which our country was founded and enter the realm of Cuba or Soviet Union. If I were dropping f-bombs, n-bombs, selling illegal stun guns, and promoting incest it would be one thing...but I think we are all adults here and can handle a negative post with strong wording about how I feel police are undereducated for the role. So keep reporting those posts Stalin...and make sure you vote for Hillary in 2016 while you are at it!

The correct term for "Freeze Protecting" a 2.5" gallon Water Fire Extinguisher is "Loaded Stream"
Any local fire extinguisher company should be able to provide. It comes in powered form and can be mixed in a 5 gallon bucket to get your desired result.
Meaning: The more you mix, the better the freeze protection, ie: 0, -10, -20 degree's.
    Hope this helps.
    Stay Safe.
