I think it depends on the situation. I can think of a few instances where we either had everyone on the Rescue and nobody on the bus, like Shawn said. Another time we had to wait like 6 to 8 minutes for the Rescue to respond to give us a hand with an obese patient in cardiac arrest. Another situation is if you don't have the manpower to roll the bus, roll something with some EMS equipment and get some aid there to help out before the mutual aid bus shows up.

I think they gave it back, or it was removed from service. They are driving one of the early 90's Seagraves with the single front Jack.

IMHO, a bar has NO PLACE in any firehouse. Look at all the incidents, especially in the past two or so years where members were tanked and crashed a rig, some of which with fatal consequences. Yes, I had my card in the firehouse, but rarely drank there. Cans of worms will be opened for sure. I understand that it helps to have a bar for events in the big room at the firehouse, but at any other time it should be off limits. And for those of you that defend the bar in the firehouse, and the reasoning that it keeps members from quitting the department,or that it's cheaper than going to the local pub, if that's what keeps them there, then they are not worth having in your department. Soapbox 10-9, have a nice day.

I'll just dig out the car, along with the fiances car. Nice thing about living in an apartment building, no driveways to shovel.

It's also a TYPICAL FDNY move. Reactive instead of proactive. The ropes should never have been taken away in the first place.

As a matter of fact, this has been a pretty light winter. Coulda been worse, like the winter of 95 into 96 where there was a record broken in NYC for snowfall. For all of you plow drivers out there, go out and get yourselves PAID!!!

Another person who seems to get off knocking what he knows nothing about. I agreed with him up to the point that the movie sucked. That's about as far as it went. The flaming pile of rubbish line pi$$ed me off considering I lost a number of friends that morning. Just another pi$$ed off guy looking to get a rise out of the reader. I don't need to read a review to say the movie stunk.

I look at it this way. If you want to move into the city, that's fine. I did. If you know anyone with a city address, use it and get at least one utility bill in your name, and you can get around it.(Wink Wink) Our union has been fighting to get the residency requirement dropped for years.

I wish I remember the specs for it, but LCFD had a 1970 Mack CF with a 55 foot? Telesqurt, refurbed(sort of) bought from FDNY. Served as Engine 70 at one time. Caught fire on us twice, couldn't get out of its own way, and there is a picture laying around the archives of its former Lieutenant sitting off the boom of the Telesqurt with a rope and a large hook tied off to a 6 foot pike pole making it look like he was going for the big one in the lake. Ahhhh good times.

Fret not, there will always be someone willing to buy it as an "antique" or some Department in the middle of nowhere that would pony up the cash to refurb it.

I understand that one of the things I said was turn em around if they are not needed, this lends itself to that whole liability thing. If the cop says there is no need for Fire or EMS, as a dispatcher, my response to that is, "That's nice, keep em going anyway". Let them get there, assess the situation and then take it from there. Maybe I shoulda rephrased it.

They should have done a spare MACK CF not a 94 Seagrave!!!! :-P Well said, dude, just like 288 looked when they first became a squad. Although, and this is unfortunate, I don't think there are too many, if any CF spares left in the inventory, be they spares or reserves.

Any dispatcher with a shred of common sense, an idea of the area, and who has been trained properly will do it as we've said from the beginning. Send em all out. You can always turn em around later.

Not for me to accuse anyone of being a killjoy here, but it's been a busy winter all around, I would say. One thing I have learned, there are those who relish in the heavy fire duty, and others who let lose an ahhh @#$% when they get toned out for a working fire. There is a happy medium in all of this. Hopefully, when members of departments reach a certain point in a career, they will find this medium. The Firefighter who doesn't like to hear the report of a fire, but grins like a kid on Christmas after all is done, knowing the tools they have in their hands and minds saved someones property, or more important, a life. Am I making sense here?? Fires are a sad fact of life, and yes there are many things a department can get out of it,experience,newer and better equipment and the training to use it. One of the biggest ones is Justification of existence. If fire activity is down, some firehouses may be reorganized or flat out closed. Something to consider.

IF he stays clean, and I mean IF, since his rehab trip a while back, let's see how he does. Surprised he didn't sign up for LA Countys test. I wouldn't knock him just yet, but, if you're gonna do it, just do it and don't announce it to the press.

From what I can see, it looks as if they ripped most of the old pumper body off and rebuilt it, bringing the roll down doors to one side and then added the extra compartments. The suction lines were either moved to a different spot, or removed completely. About all I can see that's different. Pretty smart move by the department, refurbing the rig and making it usable as a Squad.(Wish they would do it with the reserve rigs as well)

As it's been said, when in doubt, turn em out. I would have advised the PD unit to respond, and then been on the phone/radio to 60 to dispatch FD and EMS. PD advises no injuries?? So what?? I can't think of how many times people see a fire truck show up at an accident scene, and immediately find something wrong with themselves. Unless that cop is of a higher medical authority then the EMT's/Medics responding, sorry, I keep the bus and the units going in. No offense intended to any Police Officer who is an EMT/Medic.

I'm not much of a pro on how 60 works, but wouldn't it be easier to tone people out on 46.26, and have X amount of departments operate on 46.14, and others on X frequency, or (shudder) go to a higher band frequency?? Example: I buffed out in LA County last year, they announced alarms on a main freq, then had two or three battalions operating on a particular frequency. Sample: Engine 36, Engine 236, Light Force 127, Truck 105, Squad 36, Battalion 7, Residential Structure fire, 2306 East 215th Street. Cross streets of Walk and Don't Walk, units utilize blue 3. I think the same could work in Westchester, Tone em out over 46.26, Units responding to the reported PIAA on 684 in Bedford utilize F-3.
