May he rest in eternal peace, and may the Lord be with you in this time of sorrow.

I'm not sure if it is still there, but it does exist as part of the Fire Family Transport Foundation. It takes firefighters and their families to hospitals, clinics, etc. It also provides transports to memorials and funerals, if memory serves me correctly.

I caught the last ten minutes of it last night. Doesn't look much different than some of the other shows I've seen.

Oil companies..... screw the poor and working folk while the head honchos get rich off of our suffering.

I found it kind of funny when LAFD's Engine 209 caught fire not too long ago. It's well known amongst the members of FDNY that the Seagrave rigs are far from perfect and indestructible.

This is a great book. Mr. Griffiths is also absolute aces. I recommend this to anyone who is a super buff, along with anyone who is looking to get on the job with FDNY, either as a Firefighter, or as a Dispatcher.

One other last bit of advice. You may be a volunteer upstate(like I was), you may have buffed NYC for years, or have friends in the job. It doesn't matter. This will be like nothing you have ever experienced. Your experiences may give you a leg up on people who come from a non fire background, but it will not be the be all end all. So, in closing, like they say when you start up in probie school anywhere. Eyes and ears open, MOUTH SHUT!! Have a nice day!!!!

F'ing skells. Hanging by the cojones would be too good for them.

As I said earlier, the residency is a big hang up. However, if Bloombag gets re-elected, that is supposed to change. I'll believe it when I see it though. One of the things I found out is, find a friend who lives in the city or join up with a friend and rent an apartment together.

It depends. Most people hired lately ae hired as provisionals(no civil service test). If you don't make it, you can take the test and be called when your list number comes up. Requirements are, a High School Diploma, 2 years of experience in an accredited Volunteer or Paid Fire Department. 2 years in some sort of emergency dispatching service. I would suggest calling Personell at HQ to get the full list of requirements. The big hang up that a lot of people have is you must establish residency in the 5 boroughs of NYC within 90 days of hire.

Looks like I'll be doing a lot of running around the next couple of weekends. Thanx for the updates, gang.

Only 7 of the 12 hired made it through the firsts stage of training. It will be interesting to see how the rest handle life on the platform for the next few months. Waiting to hear about the next class.

Why does this still happen?? Because lack of grapes by chief and firematic officers to do the right thing. They allow it. Nuff said. As for the back up guy in shorts and flip flops, you're a knucklehead who should know better.

The FDNY Dispatchers got your back. Love and prayers to all.

It is with regret that announcement is made of the death of Supervising Fire Alarm Dispatcher George Zeitchek(SFAD#34) FDNY Brooklyn Operations. Which occured Tuesday Sept. 12th, 2005. George leaves behind a wife, two sons, and a lot of grieving co workers in the FDNY Bureau of Communications. George was one of my first bosses when I got hired back in 1997, and he was a big help to me in my first year as a boss. I relieved him Sunday morning up in the Bronx. He will truly be missed by many, and proves the theory that only the good die young. He was 56, and a 30 year veteran of the FDNY Bureau of Communications. God Bless ya, George.

Black over red has been catching on recently in the NY area. I can think of a few departments that have that scheme. For some departments, it works very well. Thornwood yellow, or cream, eeeehhhhhh if it works, ok. There's making a rig look distinctive, and then there's being downright garish. I've also been noticing a gray or silver color popping up a lot lately and I must say it's interesting. Port Chesters' Engine I believe has it. TL-2 is also one of the nicest looking rigs out there. But it's a trend that I honestly think makes the rigs look much bolder.
-
There's a few guys who do photography, but I don't know of anyone who shoots video up that way. You would think with the work some departments are getting, it would happen.
-
I wasn't going to say it, but thank you, you are correct.

I was sitting at my desk in the FDNY Manhattan/Citywide Communications Office. Engine 6 gave the verbal over the air. Screaming for a Second Alarm. I took phone calls from people trapped inside the towers. I think that pretty much sums it up.

I presume you haven't seen some places where these boxes are. I have seen on numerous occasions where the pull style only box was the only reporting source on a number of incidents. Then you get the people who just press the two way boxes and walk away thinking that's it. That's another story. As for people not knowing where they are, how about not even knowing their home address?? In a situation like the blackout a few years ago, one of the only things that worked when the phones didn't, were the boxes.
-
Not entirely true. Especially when you have the aforementioned people on cell phones who have no idea where they are. Then you have the people out there who don't have the luxury of ANY kind of phone. Throw in the hearing and speech impaired, etc. Removing boxes, to an extent, puts the public at risk. But that's another story for another time.

I would presume the tapes are either reel to reel(the real old type), or on a digital recorder(DVR). Usually, in my experience, tapes get pulled for investigations or a specific request. I would suggest maybe talking to a chief with a specific reason for it, then have that request forwarded to 60 for a copy or written transcript.
