We're always looking for help. Requirements can be found through Personnel at Metrotech (718) 999-2000. We have been hiring people provisionally, and when the new test is written, you take it. Hours are 7a-7p(2 days) 7p-7a(2 nights) then 4 or 5 days off depending on your spot in the staff rotation. Depending on how well you do in your first element of training(Alarm Receipt), you can possibly get the borough of your choice. (Not guaranteed) Advantages:You get to work for one of the busiest and famous Fire Departments in the World. If you want to become a firefighter, this is a good way to get your foot in the door and get an idea of what goes on.(The highest ranking former Dispatcher is now a BC, and we have a number of guys who have become firefighters, most notably, FF Joe DiBernardo of R-3 who was injured at the Fatal Fire last month in the Bronx) The time you accumulate counts towards the pension at the end of your career. A good bunch of people to work with and wealths of knowledge about not only NYC, but the fire service in general. And you may have me as an instructor or boss!!! :peace: Drawbacks: A few, staffing is short so overtime is plentiful. Most of it is voluntary, some of it is forced. The starting pay isn't the greatest, (Something like $31,000/yr).We're working with a CAD system that is older than me(and I am 31) You have to establish residency in the 5 boroughs within 90 days of hire. And you would probably have to deal with me, either as an instructor, or as a boss  !!!!! We're putting in a class of 20 in a few weeks, and there will probably be more spots opening up just to fill the ranks, so if being behind the scenes is something that interests you, give a call. Any questions, comments, concerns?? PM me.

As of 0700 Monday, the FDNY Fire Alarm Dispatchers will have new numbers. All the way from the newest probie to the crustiest old salt on the platform. 100-499 are permanent civil service 500-699 are provisional appointments on more than a year 700-up are Probationary/Provisional with less than a year. So, you'll have to learn all the new numbers of some familiar voices. Have fun all you scanner buffs out there!!!

Well at least the locals in Washington Heights and Inwood didn't torch every bit of garbage and vehicle in sight up and down Wadsworth, Amsterdam, St. Nick and Audbon Avenues like they did when the Yanks won it all. Seriously, one of the things about being a boss instead of being Dispatcher #150(which is what I would have been in the number change I brought up) is that I don't get to play with the radio as much as I would like, or used to. You're also lucky that there is an automatic bad word deleter on this site, because I can't really use the venom I have for John Sterling on this site.

Before I moved back to the city, I read the Reporter Distorter regularly. I preferred the Putnam County Courier. One thing about Eric Gross, he was very accurate in his story writing and was actually kind to the departments up that way.

Yeah, and what has happened every post season over the past 5 years?? Your beloved Yankees win the division, and don't make it past the first or second round of the playoffs. Bloated payroll, Steinbrenner throwing money at over the hill players in a futile attempt to win it all like Torres' first few years back in the Bronx. The pitching isn't there like it was. The bullpen except for Rivera is suspect. The farm system gets depleted while Steinbrenner in his arrogance and desire for instant gratification trades away hot prospects for over the hill types such as the Big Unit, who I may add, is one of my favorite pitchers. They have very little in the way of youth. Getting rid of Soriano to bag A-Rod was a bad move. You already got one of the greatest shortstops in the game, why try to tamper with it?? Even if he goes to third base. Not to mention the guy chokes bad in the offseason. I also have a problem with the arrogance of certain Yankee fans. They walk around with this feeling of superiority over everyone else. 26 World Championships, yeah that's great. But over the course of what, 102 years?? How many other teams have been around that long?? It boils down to this, the Yankee organization is consumed by its arrogance after winning those championships in 1996, 98, 99 and 2000. They walk into the seasons expecting to win it all and they get beat because they underestimate the teams they face in the playoffs. The Angels, Red Sox and many other teams are no longer afraid of the big bad Yankees anymore. They are hungrier for the glory while the Yankees seem to think it will be handed to them. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate the Yankees, I do respect many of their players and I have the utmost respect for Joe Torre, especially with all the crap he has to deal with. Personal prediction, the Yankees are turning out to be like the Braves over the past 15 years. They've won a few World Championships, and then they win the division, and then get knocked out of the playoffs. And don't start me with John Sterling. Have you ever listened to a more biased and self important baseball commentator?? He's more interested in listening to himself talk. I personally despise this man. Just announce the game, stop trying to act like you actually play for the team and get your nose out of Steinbrenners rear. For him to refer to Giambi and "The Giambino" is absolute blasphemy. To compare this juicehead to the venerable George Herman Ruth is disgusting. Anyway, I figure it's going to be a Cardinals/Angels World Series with the Cardinals taking it all. They got whupped bad last year, but I think the Angels aren't going to be as tough a challenge as last years' Red Sox were. And yes, I am a Mets fan and I am also disappointed that they had a better record than the Padres and still ended up in third place. The NL East right now is like how the AL East was about 10-15 years ago, the toughest division in the Majors. Mets prediction, I would say by next season or 2007 they will be either close to the wild card or take the division. I don't see Atlanta giving it up unless they have a major collapse. And believe me, the Mets are also fraught with problems, the Zambrano/Kazmir trade and a few other crappy deals come to mind. But, that is another story for another time.

Go Angels!!!!!

Probably just a high school diploma. I'll find out from any of my colleagues who are ex-NYPD if there are any other requirements.

If memory serves me right, Crane is also known as Long Pond road. Andy, you just might see me there.

T pretty much nailed it. The whole Truck thing is more of an old fashioned term. If you notice, we say Ladder three-seven, or Thirty-seven Truck. Rescue: Heavy Rescue type apparatus. Squad: Rescue Pumper type apparatus which can operate in a plethora of capacities. Battalion: Chief officer in charge of a group of companies Division: Chief officer in charge of a group of battalions. Marine: Fireboat That's pretty much the meat and potatos of it.

Stinks they can't also get our CAD system up to speed.

I'm waiting to see what came down on our end. These are all important points to consider. I do remember that WC Field Comm was parked at the Bronx Dispatchers office for a few days following the 11th.

Can anyone fill me in on Open Houses in the Westchester/Putnam/Dutchess Area next month?? I feel like getting out and doing some apparatus photography. Thanx in advance, y'all.

Looks as if Lake Carmels' got cancelled. The Somers FD Headquarters is on Route 139 over by Somers High School.

Due to the getting run over by a train feeling when I got up yesterday, I missed my little sojourn. I will however endeavor to be up there Sunday. Hey, LCFD, ya miss me??

This is probably going to ruffle some feathers, and it's something that was very true. It was written in an old Coast Guard book. "You have to go out, but you don't have to come back." If you're properly equipped, you have to go and it's up to you and your colleagues to ensure that you do come back.
-
Once again, not entirely true. Do you know how many times I got asked what my number was when I was a dispatcher?? So the guys out in the field would listen up. Do you know how often I and many of the others I work with get phone calls from members in the field asking to speak to a dispatcher by number??? So believe me when I tell you that there are people out there who DO care. And you are correct, there has been some confusion on the part of the dispatchers. Like I said old habits die hard.
-
Not entirely true. I have slipped a few times and given my old number when I was on the radio. Old habits die hard. And as for the guys out in the field, many of them do listen to hear who is working.
-
Looks like I will be hitting Mahopac and Mt Kisco tomorrow, possibly Carmels' if it's tomorrow. Somers and definitely LCFD next weekend, and job/schedule permitting Brewster and GB the 16th. Hope to see you guys out there. Just look for the blue eyed weirdo snapping shots of apparatus.

Congrats and best wishes to you. Fellow Supervising Dispatcher sends... BT NNNN

He's going to have to deal with being Dispatcha 125, K. I'm one of his bosses, so I am just waiting for his reaction when I see him next.
