  1. partyrock, you took the words right out of my mouth. Although I think it's an interesting idea, this would probably interfere with the hands free law here. Would it give dispatchers an edge?? Possibly. I've learned in my experience to ask the right questions and listen for certain things that will be the indicator differentiating a minor from major incident. Just get me a CAD system that can properly use this new idea and we'll see where it goes.
  2. I think guns, and detergent is one of those apples and oranges things. Personal opinion, you don't like the stuff you're given, you make your own or use your own.
  3. How about the ones that are getting sick, or, have already died from working down at the Pile?? How about the ones that get shot at?? How about the girl who dropped dead of an MI shoveling the snow in front of the ambulance station?? It may not have happened because there wasn't a crew available and mutual aid had to be toned out. It may have already happened. Believe me, somebody out there will lose a loved one because of a slow repsonse time, and then there will be hell to pay. And, as usual, the problems will get solved because someone had to die to create change. Do yourself a favor, think before you type.
  4. Nice to see a few places I recognize from my many travels out there. I guess it's safe to presume that old County Squad is being turned into a Deluge unit. Another safe guess is that Squad with the box on the back is one of those "Heavy" or USAR Squads. I also recognized County Engine 88(Seagrave Telesqurt) in the shops. Who does that unmarked ALF pumper belong to?? PS, I'll be out there next month.
  5. I have to say, that "how would you deal with this situation" was a joke. Like Seth said, I didn't think of it as a firefighter, but I did think of it as how the city would want a person to think. I did get the 45 questions done in time, and had time to go back and look a few over. The Pease Rd one looked like a typo, so I went with the 9 and the matching apartment number. The photocopy of the chain was pi$$ poor, but if you looked close enough you could see it. There were a few of them that were definitely meant for the not so smart. Such as, after you strap on your radio, what do you put on next?? Or, the chief is the guy in the white helmet, where is he in this picture?? The map questions were an interesting little twist.
  6. Best of luck, and if I can impart any knowledge about being a boss, let me know.
  7. This is one of the advantages of living in the flight path of JFK. 5 minutes by car, 15 by train. Boom, in done and away we go.
  8. That slide down ladder rack is a nice touch.
  9. There are some departments out there that swear by them. I've only seen them in action once out on 95 in Virginia back in 95. I wasn't too impressed with them. There are some other departments out there that have not one, but TWO sets on the rig.
  10. True story, as related to me by my older brother. Fella decides to take a swan dive in front of a downtown number 4 or 5 train at Grand Central and lands in between the rails. Train goes right over him. As he is being hauled out by FD and PD and EMS, he is heard to say, "Dammit, I can't even kill myself right."
  11. Make that a third on Garys'. My brother drives up from South Jersey to get his mitts on them.
  12. I can't understand why people would be opposed to having a firehouse in their neighborhood. If response times to the @$$ end of that area are as bad as Kenny says, it can't be a bad thing. Maybe if it was explained to the residents, they might be a little more receptive.
  13. What the NR Buff said. I use the green rechargables and they work out just fine.
  14. 12-23, 1900x0700. 12-24, 1900x0700 12-31 0700x1900. 1-1, 1900x0700 Lucky me.
  15. I believe this was covered earlier. 53 got a new Seagrave Tower Ladder that was sent to 45(who needed a new rig). 53 got the Spartan because it is one of the slowest houses in the city and there would be less chance of it breaking down or falling apart from the tough use FDNY is known for.
  16. As of right now I will be there.
  17. Nice shot. And, there's nothing wrong with white appratus. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, doesn't matter how many bells, whistles, strobes, flashers, LED's it's got or what color it is. SOMEONE WILL FIND A WAY TO CRASH IT, OR CRASH INTO IT!!!!
  18. Disregard my last, I need to be more attentive when reading.
  19. I got this kind of grief a couple of years ago shooting LA County Station 8 in West Hollywood. Never mind I was talking to a friend of mine who was working there at the time. Some lady approached me as I was snapping away and asked me why I was taking pictures of fire apparatus. I told her it was a hobby of mine, she made a strange face and mumbled something and went on her way. I brushed it off. Some people don't understand the hobby. Others are well intentioned because of the age of terrorism we live in today. Others, well they're just nosy F'ers with nothing else better to do than break stones. Chalk it up to one of those people and keep snapping away.
  20. I'll be there. Probably about 730 or so.
  21. Back before the laws got changed, this is where cigarettes came in handy. Now, I don't know what's worse, the fact that Seth went and took pictures of this, or that someone actually tested a urinal to lessen the splash factor.
  22. His arm is pretty suspect. I dunno if the Yanks made a good deal here. As far as Clemens is concerned, I think he's gonna waffle like he did last year and then get his butt handed to him a few times and realize it's time to go.
  23. Female Monarch type=Empress. I remember A-1, Abbey Richmond, Metro North(who I worked for, for a total of a month after I got out of the service). TransCare before they got taken over by Metropolitan, and Sloper-Willen, who I wanted to apply with before I got on the job. There's a bunch of private ambulances out there.
  24. There's a couple of rigs out there with those light bars. 3 Engine and 114 Truck come to mind. I believe they were replacements for the original Code 3 lights that were damaged at the Trade Center. It's also nice to see the tradition of companies using tape to number the spares. Used to see it in chalk and once I saw the company number in Roman numerals. CCCVIII
