  1. One other thing. Not sure if Jim put it in the book. If a Squad company is acting as an Engine first, second, or third due, the next available Squad is assigned as the normally assigned Squad on the 10-75. Example: Squad 270 goes in second due as an Engine to Queens Box 6057(Liberty Avenue and 117 Street). On the 10-75, Squad 288 is the normally assigned Squad.
  2. This is a tough one. There's nothing in the article that states what the regulations call for in a situation like this. Can't really say it was the dispatchers fault if they were following regulations.
  3. There's a book called Paramedic. It's about a Medic(obviously) from NYC. It was released in the late 80's early 90's. I don't remember who wrote it, but it was an interesting read. And once I write my book on FDNY Communications(a few years away), I will recommend it.
  4. I had dilemma like this a number of years back. We were heading from PHC to a diff breather way out at the other end of our district. We were coming up Stoneleigh Avenue and passed an MVA. Alamo Medic was on scene and looked like she had her hands full. We debated stopping to assist and then kept on going. I understand there was a higher medical authority than I on scene but felt we were right there and should have stopped. I guess it was just me being a young EMT and wanting to do the right thing, and maybe a little bit of the desire to work on some trauma stuff. In hindsight, I suppose there may have been ramifications if we stopped and assisted. In regards to the topic at hand, this is where it's a good idea to have at least two EMT's on board. You stop, drop off the one EMT with some gear to begin treatment until another bus gets there, or relieved by an equal or higher medical authority.
  5. The red pods are LED's and the white ones are rotators. They don't look that bad and stay in that sweeping sequence.
  6. It's a mid 80's vintage. 228 was probably it's old number before Dutchess renumbered units back in 89-90?? Wassaic is just above Wingdale if I remember right.
  7. anyone got pictures?? I was kinda bummed I didn't make this one.
  8. I remember seeing that picture at my old CG station. Never thought I'd be riding one of those boats.
  9. With all the new gadgets and gizmos, along with bunker gear, it does take up a lot of room in the back. I'm interested to see what they do. Why do I have this sneaky feeling they are going to try out that box looking thing that LAFD had and MDFR uses.
  10. Just be sure to replace the siren with the 1812 Overture, or "For those about to Rock" by AC/DC
  11. They are a rather large buff organization. The President is one of my ex bosses. The Newsletters quality has dropped some over the past few years. They used to give a lot more detailed info on certain things, but with the new publisher, it's been minimized. I'm not a member, but they always have a pretty kick @$$ party every year at Marina Del Ray over in Throggs Neck. They do some pretty cool field trips and get a lot of good info on some of the goings on around the job. Let me know how it turns out. I'm not a member but if you need someone to vouch for you, I will.
  12. Anybody got a light???
  13. OK, when's the wetdown??
  14. Correct me if I am wrong, but that BCFD snorkel is the same rig, just renumbered.
  15. tongue planted firmly in cheek here. I just like thunderstorms, etc. Nothing, to me is cooler than watching Mother Nature throw a hissy fit.
  16. You guys get all the fun.
  17. EMS Communications moved a few years ago to Metrotech. I'm not sure if anyone from EMS aside from the shops is still over in Maspeth.
  18. The only VAC in the Bronx I know of is Throggs Neck VAC. They are quartered right next to E-72. I was a member there briefly, and if my memory is correct, they had a pretty decent sized membership. Edgewater Park is still active. Aviation got a few new rigs after the 11th. I don't know where they are hanging their helmets since they were vacated out of the old firehouse a few years ago.
  19. Another moron who should be hung out to dry. Way to go Chad.
  20. I dunno, maybe it's me, but a lot of the stuff that has come out over the past 15 years hasn't really appealed to me. My affection towards newer bands is limited to Disturbed, Black Label Society(Zakk Wylde of Ozzys band), and not much else. I'm more into some heavier stuff, with a liberal sprinkling of hair bands and some early punk(Misfits, Black Flag). Anyone who knows me or has taken a ride in the Almighty Cavalier Rock Box can attest to my tastes. One of the only radio shows I listen to is Friday Night Rocks on Q-104. The rest of the time it's CD's I've burned. Eddie Trunk plays some pretty good stuff. Heard some classic Slayer followed up by a Testament tune this past Friday. Felt like I was back on the hill at Carmel High in a denim jacket and a shoulder length mullet. Ahh those were the days, my friends. Unfortunately, a lot of that music doesn't bring in the advertising dollars. Hence it doesn't really work out. It happened with Q-104 back in the mid 90's. They were playing a lot of heavy stuff(for the time) with some classic heavy stuff such as Judas Priest, Pre 1983 KISS, Maiden, etc. It lasted about two years and then they went to the classic rock when WNEW went alternative. It was pretty funny listening to Scott Muni(RIP) or Carol Miller trying to talk up The Offspring when you knew it wasn't what they wanted to be playing. Talk Radio is best left for the AM stations. I don't listen to O n A that much because I am usually sleeping or working when they are on. I do miss Ron and Fez, but I really don't want to shell out the money. David Lee Roth was destined to fail because how can you fill Stern's shoes?? Can't fault the guy for trying. He makes a good radio guest, but not a good host. I'm telling you, I should have gotten into some kind of program directing stuff. Me and one of my friends were discussing this the other day. We have no radio resume(unless you count my CG and FDNY time), but we could definitely give Hard Rock Radio a kick in the tush if given the opportunity. Shameless plug here, for you MySpace types, my friends' old band was called Connected. Check em out. They rocked out.
  21. This is a bit much. Sounds like the mayor is trying to cut costs. Yeah, take care of the grounds around the firehouse, but at a park?? Come on. The first time someone loses a toe....You can see where I'm going with this.
  22. People out there have thin skin. TL 2 brings up a good point. Anything you say can, and probably will be used against you. You make a comment that is constructive criticism, and BOOM someone gets all bent out of shape. Those who attack you personally for something you typed on here really need to get a grip. I've noticed in my tenure here that people may not say how they really feel for fear it will either start a war, or one of the moderators will take offense and there goes the post. I've had to deal with this a lot for things I have said on other boards. So now, I watch what I say, or don't say anything. And, it's sad. Luckily, I haven't caught any crap for something I said in here other than once.
  23. Well, with a call volume such as that, hopefully they'll get more than 20 years of service out of it.
  24. We try to keep it as brief as possible. If we have to pick up a unit, Attention Engine 45, respond Bronx Phone Alarm Box 4612, 1118 East 180 Street between Bronx Park Avenue and Devoe Avenue, Fire in a Private Dwelling, Engine 45 Acknowledge. We get the acknowledgement, and then repeat the alarm. If the assignment has changed, or if a unit will be delayed, we advise the IC, and if the first due engine or truck is delayed, we advise the second due of it. There are some of us, myself included who could be a little long winded.
  25. Sounds like a good idea. Maybe set it up for Fire Prevention Week.
