There are engines that are trained in water/ice rescue. I believe a number of them in the Rockaways are trained as well.
-
Because that would be the logical thing to do.
-
I have to admit, I still have the occasional flashback from my experiences, but once I heard the preliminary report by 21 Engine, any thought of a terror attack pretty much disappeared.

Gee, who didn't see this one coming?? This is pretty sickening. Your head is messed up because you lost your sister, ok fine. This happens and you get more messed up?? SEE A FRIGGIN SHRINK!!!! If you were hurt by the accident physically, then sue the pants off Con Ed. I'm messed up from Sept. 11th too, I've dealt with fires and other incidents that were incredibly stressful. I'm still chugging away. My advice to this lady is very simple. Shut yer piehole and go get some mental help. You live near GCT, you can sure as hell afford it you whiny snooty strumpet. PS, get ready for more of these.

Weather and other things permitting, I'll be there.

I'll take this from an Ex-Coastie point of view. Summer equals lots of boats on the water. Some are possibly unsafe to operate, others could potentially be piloted by people under the influence. Add a healthy sprinkling of jumpers. Throw in the added spectre of terrorist targets, such as commercial vessel traffic, or Indian Point. People may not like the inconvenience of being stopped, but they should at least be thankful somebody is out there looking out for them. Now here's an idea. This would make it so someone isn't repeatedly stopped. Why not have the local cops, or CG give the person a ticket stating they were boarded and inspected, so the boater isn't held up. Show the ticket, go off on your merry way. It would probably stop the issue of being boarded two or three times.

People get panicked. Or, they are on a highway and on a cell phone, and they spot something, and then give the next exit they pass. Perfect example, we had an incident on the Bronx River Parkway the other day that was reported to us being as far north as Oak Street and as far south as Gun Hill Road. We sent the appropriate assignment, Yonkers had units going. It turned out it was up north of Oak Street near the Wakefield Metro North Station. One of the problems my dispatchers face regularly in the Bronx and in northern parts of Manhattan, will be when a person will give you the house number they live in, the street on the corner and then the street they live on. Yet another perfect example, 3171 East 161 Street, Park Avenue. The actual address is 3171 Park Avenue Off of East 161. I have a theory about this one. The person enters the building at 3171 Park, but the window of the apartment faces 161. So they believe they live at 3171 East 161. One time, I had a caller in Manhattan who swore up and down(with a few swear words thrown in) that he lived at 2475 West 144th St off of 8th Avenue. Finally, after realizing I was going around in circles with the guy, I told him if he was at that address, he'd be in the Hudson River, closer to the Jersey side. When you give them the correct address, the answer you usually receive from the caller is, "That's what I told you!!!!" It's a very simple explanation, ignorance. People think because they call 911 that the 911 operator automatically knows where they are because of the E-911 system.

I'm not sure if there is a law on the books regarding this. IMO, it's kind of a grey area, because what qualifies an emergency to some folks we may look at as either not an emergency, but BS. Then you have the little old lady or man who calls for a ride to the hospital because they are lonely, or the ones who call for a kid having difficulty breathing, when all the kid has is bronchitis, and he needs a ride to the clinic. The last example is definitely abuse. But how can you really punish someone for trying to do the right thing??
-
Start of a statewide trend?? Nowadays, there's too much liability to have that sort of thing going on. It's probably a good idea to start phasing them out.
-
That's cute, I mean really cute. Luckily I haven't had my nieces or nephew call looking for me.

Yes, Bloomberg can manage money, but the costs that were cut don't necessarily benefit the average person. He is totally out of touch with his constituency. He is not labor friendly. PS, as far as Rudy and the radios are concerned, one of the lessons learned from the first WTC attack in 1993 was those radios were to be replaced. And 8 plus years later they weren't. The replacements weren't properly tested, and pulled out of the field not too long before the 11th.
-
Who didn't see this one coming?? Giuliani stepped on a lot of toes during his tenure as mayor. It wasn't just the radios, although that is going to be the biggest thing they will go after him about.

I heard about the Caprice with the Hurst tool in the trunk.

I think the Fire Service in general could pick up a few tips from our European brethren. No frills, get the job done kind of equipment. The Metz rigs are, imho an example of such.

I really can't comment too much on these folks, because I have never had any direct dealings with them. I'm sure if my brother was a member of this board he would be ripping them every chance he got. What I would suggest to you is speak to any Cop, FF or EMS type that you know who works in Crown Heights, Borough Park, Williamsburg,Midwood,Kew Gardens, Forest Hills, or anywhere upstate, such as Monroe, who deals with these folks and ask them what they think. From what I have seen, anyone on this board who catches the occasional ribbing for being a superbuff, fret not. These folks have anything you could possibly be strapping in your POV beat. Perfect example, I buffed an all hands in Borough Park in December of 04. I met up with a buddy of mine at the scene, and we split up for a few minutes. Hatzoloh, Hatzolah, Hatzalah, however they spell it in Borough Park(DISCLAIMER They do spell it at least three different ways) Had a MOBILE COMMAND CENTER parked on 39th Street and 12th Avenue. I called him on the Nextel, and was like, "DUDE you have got to get up here and get a shot of this thing!!!" I have also never seen as many tricked out Suburbans, Excursions, and any other type of SUV out there. I'll never forget the Caprice Station wagon I saw on Ocean Parkway many moons ago blazing off to somewhere with lights and sirens. Just made me chuckle. Now, let's keep it nice. Even though I think partyrock would summed up a lot of what my bro would probably say.

OK Folks, next Sunday, 7-15, I'm planning a little out and about. Gonna need some help from people in Brewster, Croton Falls, Put Lake, and Somers. I'd like to do Somers, Amawalk, and Granite Springs, and the main houses for Brewster, PL, and CF. Just PM me if we can work something out. Thanx.
-
Unfortunately, due to some personal business, I'm not going to be able to come up this weekend. Thanx to everyone who offered to help.
-
Hmmm, this has some potential for me. I'll be in touch.

Would have been nice to have the freq for Lake Carmels' tones. I wanted to do the silly buff thing and put them on my cell phone.
-
This is such a load of garbage. I guess having a press pass isn't enough. I wouldn't get too steamed about it folks. From what I interpret, this isn't aimed at the buffs.

Hate to say it, but I smell lawsuit.

It's almost like a baptism, or christening for a piece of apparatus.

There were a few boxes out there where 61 and 41 go 4th due as Engines. Not sure if they are still assigned as Engines on them. 61's 4th due boxes were up towards Co Op City and 41's were heading over into Harlem. Not sure if it's been changed yet, but there are at least two boxes in Harlem where 41 goes in as an Engine 3rd due.
