  1. Didn't NFL Europe just recently fold?? Why bother with a formula that failed??
  2. Sometimes an incorrect address is given to us, other times, the address goes into CAD as being valid, but when the unit pulls up, it's not there. Chalk that one up to either bad CAD programming, or a caller giving incorrect(sometimes maliciously incorrect) information. Another possibilty is nothing showing, and the crew wants to make sure they didn't make a wrong turn. One thing I see a lot is having to translate. Example, the calling party states they are at 3161 East 161 Street and Park Avenue. What they are trying to say is they are at 3161 Park Avenue off of East 161 Street. I think I figured out why. They enter the building at 3161 Park, but the windows of the apartment face 161. Bear in mind I am trying to give folks the benefit of the doubt and not think they are really that dumb. I did have some fun with this in my Manhattan days. After going round and round with a caller, I would say, "Look, if you were at 2415 West 124th Street, you'd be in the Hudson River, pretty close to the Jersey side. Are you sure you're not at 2415 8th Avenue over by West 124th Street??"
  3. Water, mister fans, Gatorade, regular fans, blankets, towels, coffee, hot water for tea and hot chocolate.
  4. As for the mayor, don't shortchange your emergency services. Give us the equipment we need to do the job, and leave certain aspects untouched. This is really FDNY Communications and kinda FDNY specific, so I don't think I'll bore you with details. That's what other sites are for.
  5. Does Sutphen make non midmount aerials??
  6. Get your facts straight and correct before reporting. Use proper terminology. Learn something about procedures, protocols, etc. Use your journalistic talents to educate, rather than just report.
  7. An aspect of your concern has been covered here before in the land of silent responses. I think when you mention it being a pet peeve of yours, yeah, it's just you. As far as 420's gripe, I am with you there about the yelling on the radio. If you slow it down, they screamer will usually slow it down as well.
  8. So, last week, there was a little Code 3 Collectors thing in a suburb of Chicago, so I decided to take a little ride. Actually, 11 hours, 800 plus miles and an extra hour and a half finding the darn hotel. It's out and about time!!! First stop, O'Hare Airport, home of Engine 9, Squad 7 and Ambulance 59. Squad 7 is this huge Pierce Rescue, unfortunately, it was running a spare so I didn't take shot of it. Here's Engine 9, and this thing is big, at least for Chicago standards. Ambulance 59 Next stop, the next day, Engine 23/TL-5 and 6-7-1. 6-7-1 is a deluge wagon, Lil Mo. The Engine and Truck are the only LaFrance rigs aside from the Hazmat rigs. Next Stop is a rather famous place.
  9. It was ridiculous how bad it got. I was listening to Main and Engelwood and there was at least one request for mutual aid ambulances, a couple of cooling buses and at least one unit opened up a hydrant and people were flocking to it like "an oasis".
  10. Have to admit, with the new development they are putting up in Aviations neck of the woods, might be interesting to see FDNY put at least an engine down there. No offense to partyrock, but that is a looooooong haul for 96 Engine to get down there.
  11. I will say one thing about West Hamilton, they sure do get a lot of running out of that brush rig. That, and they have come a long way since the first time I saw their firehouse, a little two bay house adjacent to their present home, with I think one or two Engines. I didn't know they had the second bus.
  12. Believe me, I had at least three or four other houses planned, but since the marathon was gumming up the works, and my car died I kinda got side tracked.
  13. One of my colleagues lives there and has referred to it as Tiny Town. I think you're getting a little bent over nothing. In other words, calm yourself.
  14. Why, yes it is....Hence the theme song in my head. Ever notice how these guys NEVER close the apparatus doors when they leave?? Check Emergency! They also do that too.
  15. Last stop before my trip went to poop. It's a good thing the Cubs lost Saturday night, this place woulda been jammed if I had gotten there if they had won. Unfortunately, no position shots, and no more pictures, since the car crapped out. A big thank you to all the members of CFD who helped out, along with the tow truck drivers. A big FU to Pep Boys for not figuring out what the problem was with my car before I had to bring it to them like three times before they figured out what was wrong. Enjoy!!
  16. Engine 116, Squad 5. I do have to say, these guys have it good when they get turned out. Computerized voice tells them where to go. It's neat, but it really lacks that human touch I think. Unfortunately, the guy who drove the snorkel wasn't feeling too hot, so I didn't shoot it the way I wanted to. I kinda picked a bad day to do this, considering the Chicago Marathon was that day, and soon after the Rock Box crapped out on me. But I did make one more stop before I had to pour a ton of money into my car, and tow trucks and head on home.
  17. Gotta love home improvements... Next stop, South Side...
  18. Just before I went to that famous place, I shot this little beauty out in front of 23. Here we go... I kinda got a funky feeling when I took this picture. Like the theme song was going on in my head.
  19. Aviation is pretty much bye bye, especially now after that little scandal. As far as how they get along with the FDNY, depends on who you ask. Gerritsen Beach is in the southwest Brooklyn, just east of Knapp Street. West Hamilton Beach is a small part of Howard Beach, just East of E-331. It's a pretty decent ride for 331 and 173 to get into that area when a box goes out. They run an engine, a brush truck, and an ambulance. Broad Channel is in between Howard Beach and Rockaway. They run two engines, a small boat and I think 2 ambulances. Richmond and Oceanic are both out in SI. They are the only departments dispatched by FDNY. We activate their pagers and whistles. They then call us and get the info. They were there before the FDNY established a presence, as were WHB, BC and the Rockaway vollies(Point Breeze, Rock Point and Roxbury). Edgewater Park is in a little section of the Bronx east of 72 Engine. We call it Tiny Town. They run 2 mini pumpers. We don't backfill in those areas, and since the areas they protect are relatively quiet and kinda distant from current FDNY assets, I don't see the department putting any houses over there in the future. West Hamilton and Broad Channel are out on Cross Bay Boulevard quite regularly fundraising. I hope that helps out. Almost forgot, all of the vollie departments except Oceanic and Richmond are dispatched on their own frequencies, and operate on the same, however, most of them can come up on our frequencies, or at least I have only heard West Hamilton and Broad Channel come up on Queens.
  20. I was sitting in the office when that chief called this one in to SI. I would take a stab at it and say it's probably the Metropolitan Fire Associations' Tower Ladder. Although I think it is on the verge of being sold. I don't know if they ever caught up with it.
  21. Gosh, and here I was thinking you meant "When are people too smart for their own good??" Silly me. Plz continue.
  22. Sure beats the old 2-1, now 3-1 I think. I always thought that little jeep with the roll cage was cute.
  23. Rescue 3 had them on their rig back in the day. I've heard R-2 use them maybe once when they were going to something close to my apartment, or it may have been a work train in the Euclid Yards, but that sucker was loud either way.
  24. These yahoos protest everything. Everyone is a "fag-enabler". I suppose forgiveness and just a whole live and let live attitude is not what they believe in.
  25. Just another moron who makes life worse for the regular buffs.
