So I'm on my way into work last night and I stop at 7-eleven for a cup of coffee. As I'm walking out I see a large column of smoke starting from up the street. (The smoke was reflecting off the clouds from the lights at Langley AFB) I smell the distinct smell of plastic burning and think to myself that this could be bad. I call the dispatcher and tell them that I'm on my way to take a look and she tells me that the board lit up right as I called about the fire. So it's 10 at night, I'm heading into work and going to miss this worker. As I come up on the scene, Hampton Truck 8 is jut setting up and Squad 10 is laying in the 5 inch to the truck. There is fire through the roof of a 50" x 30" apartment building. By the time I walked around the Wendy's lot to the scene, the 2nd alarm was transmitted which brought in 2 more truck and 4 more engine companies (Total apparatus on scene at last call was 4 truck, 6 engine, 1 heavy rescue, 1 support vehicle, 5 medic units which ran for quite a while back and forth) Hampton company 8 started with an interior attack based on the initial report of people still inside, but this quickly changed to a defensive around 10:20pm. There were quite a few evacuation calls when Truck 8 started it's stream into the building. I had to leave around 10:45 which is when they called the blaze under control. Yeah, one of the ones presumed missing is a guy out of one of the squadrons at Langley AFB. He was on local leave this week and now no one has seen or heard from him and no one has gotten in touch with him since Monday. Still no word on cause yet. The investigators have been on scene since last night but won't go into the structure due to safety concerns.

I don't care how much it costs.... How much to be towed by that!?!?!?

Well, I'll start by including a picture of MY HOUSE. That's right, I had my house lifted 2 years ago after Hurricane Isabel put 10 inches of water in my 100+ year old farm house. We had to obtain permits of course for this project but we had to have special permission to keep all the utilities connected so we could stay in the house while it was up in the air for the 3 weeks the new foundation was being formed. I had to have the city inspector as well as my chief and fire marshal come out to map out the house, identify utility connection points, and have them inspect the entire lift so if there were an emergency they knew what they were getting into.

I was on Temporary Duty to a Red Flag at Nellis AFB, NV. I had just gotten home not long before the attacks started after working a 15+ shift. I was woken up to one of my coworkers that was just going into work saying "aren't you from New York??" I told him i was, he said that I better turn the TV on. I managed to see what was left of the south tower going down and I just sat there wondering what was going on and what I was watching. After a minute or two my jaw hit the floor. I immediatly though of some family and friends that worked and lived down there. (I found out later everyone was ok) I sat there and watched in shock for quite some time, seeing the other tower come down as well as the pentagon attacks. I knew what had happened meant that I was in for a real long day so I tried to get a little sleep. To make matters worse, I could not get a hold of anyone in my family to find out if everyone was ok or not. Fifteen minutes after I got to sleep, I was recalled to go back into work. For those of you that know a little about the Air Force, Nellis AFB is a training base to train the pilots on combat manuvers. We usually spend 2 - 3 weeks there and then go back home. There is no live missle firing or anything like that. When I got onto base, (which took 3 hours due to security instead of the 20 minutes it usually takes) I really got scared because there were my 12 F-15C's that were there to train loaded full up with live missiles. The skies were quiet, nothing was flying around which for Las Vegas is also strange. Our commander gave us all a briefing, told us to go back to the hotel and get out bags packed, we were going back to Virginia. One of the young airmen asked the commander "how are we getting home if the president shut down all airspace over the US?" My commander just looked back, shook his head and left the area. We returned to the hotel, got our bags packed and headed back to Nellis. There, we got on a KC-10 Extender Tanker. We normally ride on these alone while the pilots fly their jets back home, only seeing the F-15's while they come up to get refueled. It was VERY quiet on that ride home. I got a chance to go down to the boom area to see our jets getting refueled. I was told this time i was not allowed to take any pictures which I figured. What I saw outside threw me for a loop again. 12 F-15's fully loaded, escorting us back the entire way. Come to find out later it was the only way that NORAD would let us fly home.

I think if someone told me that I was to be suspended because I was at home instead of responding to a call... I'd happily turn in my gear and find another department that is happy for the time I can and am willing to give.

Hmm Here's my 2 cents... (By the end of this thread, that should be a lot of cents!) Anyway, I joined my local Volunteer Fire and Rescue squads to donate my time. When I sign up for standby or am at the firehouse, I am obligated to respond to any and all calls. One cannot tell me that I have to respond when I'm at my paying job or even like now when I am at home alone with my infant daughter. I just don't sign up during the times when I know I cannot go. How could someone or some law tell me that I have to respond right now? John

I just heard Wappingers get toned out stating that 6812 and 55 were relocated to New Hamburg Station 2. What's up with that? Anyone?

I was at the Sweet Orr fire pictured in the video!!!! That was one of my first fires as well as my first Mutual aid call!!! Great Video!

Ok, I've got a question that has been bugging me for a bit. Looking around the site, I came across that a Dutchess County department may or may not have leased a piece of apparatus. My question is, Why? Why would any department lease such a large expense? Most individuals that lease a car or truck do so to just turn it in at the end and then lease a new vehicle. Is this the way the fire service is going to now? Would this not be a huge waste od taxpayer dollars? I'd love to hear thoughs on this... For or against.

Why not outright buy it? What woudl the advantage of leasing it be then?????

That was absolutely insane! I'd hate to be the contractor after that one!
