I have had FIOS phone and internet for about a month now. The internet package I went with is 20/5. BLAZING fast compared to the DSL I had (lowest DSL speed). I Have had a few problems bridging my laptop to the wireless router. Gave tech support a call, and yes I too talked to an ENGLISH AS A FIRST LANGUAGE technician who was more than helpful. The only down side that I can see is that if the power goes out you have between 1-8 hours of phone service on battery back up. After that you are dead in the water, unless you have a generator.

It was built in house by members of U.F.F.A. Local "273". It started out as lets see what we can do, to what you see with working lights, siren and air horn. Spare parts that were around the shop were put to use. Hand made wooden ladder was placed on the officers side of the rig. "273" tops out at about 12 MPH (down hill).

That was a long cold night. The fire started on the Main St side in a pile of cardboard boxes in the doorway of a liquor store.

No where has it been mentioned on how these people get transported to the hospital. The stretchers can not handle those kinds of weights. Its fine to rig ropes and all types of systems to remove the obese pt. from the building, now what. I had a similar situation where the pt. was 450+ lbs. and was in a wheel chair. He lived on the ground floor of an apartment building. Easy so far. He had a ramp out the door. Still easy. When we got him outside there was no way he would fit on the stretcher, nor would the stretcher hold him and no way would he fit into a van ambulance. We had P.D. look for a moving van with a ramp. Could not find a moving van when you need one. No moving van, Plan "B". Being that he was 3 blocks from the hospital we pushed him to the hospital in his wheel chair. Lucky the weather was good and he was close to the hospital. What "if", weather bad or not close, then what. We have all seen the extended operations to get someone out of a building and to the hospital on a pre-arranged basis, but if its an emergency, "what will you do". Just something to think about.

Any Harrison F.D. pix? I would like to see if there are any pix of my grandfather.

The Levee referred to "The Beechmont Bar". Which is next to NRFD station 3 on North Ave.

There was a grab at 1600 Harrison Ave about 20 years ago. There was an electrical fire that filled the building with thick smoke. I do believe that the grab was made with the ariel. It was on the back side of the building off of the parking lot.

The Town of Mamaroneck's Ladder 19 was set up on the north end of of Main St. with I believe Purchase's engine supplying. This was an attempt to stop the fire from running up to the railroad tracks. Later Ladder 19 was sent to Fire H.Q.s to stand-by with a Port Chester engine and a Harrison engine. Early that morning, 3 or 4 AM, there was an automatic alarm at General Foods. It seamed that there might be a job on the upper floors and a search for working hydrants was started. It was almost impossible to find a hydrant due to the 2-3 feet of snow and the freezing temps crusted the snow to a layer of ice. I don't think anyone who was in Port Chester that night will soon forget it. Wasn't Eng. 58 stuck (frozen to the ground) at the scene for a few days.

It works. It just depends what level of services a community wants. Where the priorities lie. It doesn't make too much sense to us in the northeast, however every community has different needs and wants, hazards and problems. No 2 communities are the same, many are similar, but different. There is no cookie cutter answer to fire, police or EMS needs, so we all should think before we make statements about what is needed somewhere else. We all wish that every community has the best protection. The best that money can buy, or at least what a community can afford. It is everyones duty to educate John Q. Public as to what they can get for their tax dollar and what is needed to keep all emergency responders safe and able to do the job..

Back during the mid to late 1980's, there were a handful of cities in Florida that mandated that all of the police officers, in those cities, be crossed trained as firefighters. The cities sent these police officers to the fire academy as they would their firefighters. And you guessed it, the firefighters were sent to the police academy to become police officers. This created a department of public safety. All police/firefighters would be assigned to patrol duty and when there was a fire emergency, all road patrols would respond to the emergency. The 2 or 3 Firefighter/Paramedics on duty would be at the station and drive the apparatus to the scene. If the paramedics were on an EMS run then a road patrol would be assigned station duty. This put 3x's more cops on the road and increased the amount of on duty FF's by 50 %. The FF's now P.O.'s went into the P.D. work chart.

What you were breathing was stuff that you could pronounce. Just good down to earth smoke. Most likely less harmful then a stale cigar. Those were the days, snot coming out of your nose.

With the rotary dial phones and the dictaphone phone recorders. And you better not forget to hit the outside speaker switch when you left the room. This was so that the Parkway Police officer that was working the teletype could hear if someone was calling County Control on the radio and then he would answer the radio. Fire communications in Westchester HAVE come a long way.
