But the real question is.......Did you catch any fish???

But if this guy was a hard core alcoholic or drug addict and went to the chief and said "I need help", off to rehab he goes. After months of rehab, at the city's expense, he can go back to work. Not knowing if this "rehabbed" individual could be trusted not to fall off the wagon while working. It seems there are other reasons the fire department wanted this guy to leave. If the reason was they don't know when it could happen again and others would be at risk, then anyone who needs glasses to see could be fired. Someone who needs glasses to see and can not wear them during a fire may do something to put others at risk because he couldn't read the right floor button in the elevator etc.

When I went to the Elmwood Park F.D. website and then to company 4, it has this person listed only as a member. It does not have him listed as an officer or even as a firefighter. Did I miss where it says different?

Or the study was commissioned as a political favor.

Chief Henry Campbell was of the old school that if you are properly trained it won't be your training that hurts you. PD can be an asset at any FD scene. They need to know what the limits are as to when they turn from asset to liability. What I have scene on the news reports was that the 2 officers exited the elevator on the fire floor and the fire was in the hallway. They opened the door into an inferno. The rescuers became the rescued. This asks the question, were these officers trained in how to respond to this situation? Are other officers at risk for a similar occurence?

Can you explain how a "county run ""regional"" fire service" would be any different for Mt Vernon? Do you think that the powers to be in Mt Vernon would agree to it. Or any other dept for that matter. The manpower may increase for the area. This by eliminating duplicate administrative postions. I haven't seen any cost analysist as to who would be paying what? My costs in New Rochelle may go up and I may lose coverage due to the redistricting of companies. Everyone that would be in the plan would have to come to the table with an equal share of the costs to receive the benefits. Due you really think Mt. Vernon would ante up more for a county system??

But it has so many bells and whistles ......

Now the important question.......Will my Uniden Trunk Tracker III work with the new system?

Pelham Manor had a Fire Alarm Ordinance in effect prior to the "Invitational". At the time of the fire there was a fire alarm system through out the fire building. The alarm activated and the occupants were alerted allowing for rapid evacuation of the building.

Why can't we all just work together?? Barry you can give all the examples and explanation as to why there is a problem. Why don't you spend more time fixing the problem then just exposing it. And yes I know it's not your job.....But someone has to start and you know more about what's broke and how to fix it. This county could have the Nations premiere fire service IF more time is spent working towards a UNIFIED fire service then finding all the flaws in it.

So why can't the career departments take the lead and get the volunteer departments to the same standard they have. Or is it against their DNA? If the career departments offer to train with them, I think you will be surprised as to the interest.
-
Maybe when the career departments acknowledge the volunteer departments as the farm teams and use the farm teams to feed the system. Go to the "farm teams" and mold them and shape them to the standard the career departments set as the standard. Do this instead of putting people and departments down. To paraphrase a saying in baseball, " you offer to train them and they will come" The career departments should be the mentors and the leaders to raise the standard in Westchester.

I was injured due to the city's negligence. Had major neck surgery and a year of rehab. Went out on disability retirement. The City of New Rochelle had been paying all my post-op care until they switched to a new 207-A administrator. 207 Solutions. They are not employee friendly. As soon as the city switched to 207 Solutions my problems started. After 207 Solutions authorized another round of P.T. ( which my injury/surgery will require me to have periodic maintenance for the rest of my life), they started to play games. After I finished 8 weeks of P.T. 207 Solutions unauthorized my P.T. sticking me with the entire bill. In city hall no one will take responsibility with dealing with this situation. Everyone points the finger at someone else. Mayor Bramson is useless, he can't even answer a simple question without a long political rhetoric. The city manager told me he does know much about 207-A to help me. The city is trying to save money on the employees, yet I was able to get a few invoices that the city paid to 207 Solutions and Mary Lou Conrow. They were paid a few thousand dollars just in my case alone. And let's not forget the couple of thousands that the city of New Rochelle paid an I.M.E. to write a report of lies stated that there is nothing wrong with me.

The City of New Rochelle is refusing to pay for post-op medical expenses. They feel they are not required. In checking with many departments within the NYS government, no one will admit to jurisdiction over fire departments and 207-A. Once you get your disability retirement you are on you own.

I'll throw this into the pot. If you have a grease fire in the oven inside the house, is that a structure fire? It is a fire within the structure, not a "working" structure fire. One more thing. If you respond to an automatic alarm of fire and on arrival you find that it was set off by steam from the shower, who would say it was a malfunction or an activation?
-
Actually that was a City of Rochester idea. The old Supthen was originally ordered by the City of Rochester and they backed out of 1 of 2 rigs on the order and NRFD picked up the contract. Rochester has a lot of 3 story wood frames that would have heavy fire on arrival. The deck gun was used with tank water for a quick knock down as hand lines were stretched.

On the EMS side.... While working for Abbey Richmond in White Plains on a Sunday morning back in the early 1980's. I was assigned as the paramedic on the transport ambulance and was told to return to the office. My EMT and I were told to go do a 2 man ambulette from Longview Nursing Home in W.P. to Grace Church on Main St in W.P. We were told that there were no ambulette drivers working and the transport had to be done. When we arrived ( in an ambulette ) we found a 106 y.o. female named Clara Beech. She was allowed to leave the nursing home only once a year on her birthday, and for medical services. Clara was as alert as a 40 y.o. and could see as good as anyone thru her coke bottle thick glasses. She was packaged and wheeled out to the ambulette. As we got outside she broke out in a song of praise for the beautiful day the Lord gave her on her birthday. Now off to Grace Church we went. When we arrived you would had thought the Pope was coming to the church. The church was mobbed. We wheeled her into church all the way to the front where she was the center of attention, which she ate up. We left her there and returned 2 hours later to take her back to the nursing home. To see the joy on this woman's face more then made up for the fact that an A.L.S. bus was taken out of service for an ambulette call. Well if you think it ends here it only half over. Fast forward 1 year. I was again working Abbey W.P. this time on Amb-1. When I reported for work I checked the transport booking slips for the day. Right on top was the slip for Clara to go to church for her 107th birthday. Again it would take the transport A.L.S. ambulance out of service. I told the Transport medic that I'd do the ambullete call and he cover the city. He thought I was nuts but he agreed. When we walked into her room at the nursing home ( which was only about a 10 bed nursing home) she looked up saw me and greeted me by my first name. She then said "so you came back to take me to church on my 107th birthday". I could believe she remembered me. Off to church we went again and there was another mob at the church for Clara's birthday. When we picked her up for the return she asked if we could drive around a bit. We drove around W.P. for about 30 minutes as she gave us a guided tour of how W.P. use to be around the turn of the century. That's the 1800's into the 1900"s. She grew up in W.P. I don't know what ever happened to Clara, but I think about those two birthday ambulette trips to church often.

Someone should give the officer the advice I was given by my D.C. when I was a probie. He said in all his years on the job he has never seen the skeleton of a cat in a tree. With that said he continued with, we will never put a person at risk to get a cat down from a tree. When the cat gets hungry it will find it's way down.

Just chatted with George. He has some things he needs to deal with and it has taken up most of his time lately. He sends his best to all on EMTBravo......
