  1. first line thru the front door of my house with an attached garage (split level) make a left looking for the door, there isnt one, you are going to attack this fire thru the garage cus there is only one way in and one way out. But I DO AGREE WITH THE PLACEMENT OF THE FIRST LINE INTO THE STRUCTURE. A SECOND LINE WILL BE THE ONE THAT EXTINGUISHES THE FIRE IN MY GARAGE. Also think about calling for a tow truck if there is a vehicle parked in the garage to remove it, once the fire has darkened down. attachment=7119:P9240007.JPG attachment=7121:P9240027.JPG attachment=7120:P9240018.JPG
  2. the fire started up in the attic area (most likely gutters) had a good head start prior to our arrival, and water pressure was a huge problem, last time we drafted at a fire that i can recall, and that went pretty good until the tide went out, never read about that happening in the books, lol anyway the reason the packs are on the ground, no water meant not much of an interior attack. And at the time SCBA use was minimal at best. The trucks were ok
  3. so I wont get a Pierce tee shirt with the new rescue? damn and I needed it to fill out my collection
  4. honestly, never thought about grabbing a life belt before climbing to the roof to vent or access whatever i was going up the aerial for. sounds great on paper, and we always give one to a new recruit when he climbs in training, but I have never seen one used at a job.
  5. except in Mt Vernon, the background checks are here and so still are the 3 recruits, so it didnt really matter what the background was going to uncover it seems.
  6. so every other member of his dept has to park and drive legally, but he doesnt because he might get a call, so he can get to a call without a second wasted, what is he going to do when he gets there sooooo fast, wait for the troops who are going to do the work anyway. give me a break. everybody knows we take liberties with apparatus at times, just dont make it so obvious
  7. I just read the replies on the other thread and got my answers thanks
  8. that answers my question, now for another since i am not that familiar with this type of system. Is it an all Vol house? Do Live In members get some sort of college credit? Are they required to "work" a set amount of hours per week / month?
  9. one is a lieut in the pic talking about what went on on the call and the other is a master driver for one of the depts if I read what you printed right. If that is the case my question is how is the one guy a master driver in prince georges county and a chief in dutchess? And one a Lt and a member somewhere in Dutchess?
  10. ok i will bite, you mentioned 2 members in your pics who are members also in dutchess county, one a chief??????
  11. they connected to the standpipe outlet ABOVE the fire floor does anybody see something wrong with that SOP? I am not a big fan of showing the world on YOUTUBE how your dept does things. it may work for you, but it isnt the accepted standard. on that note what size hose does your dept use for standpipe packs? How many feet? and what kind of nozzle and if smoothbore, tip size? there is no absolute right way to do this. Manpower/ conditions will dictate what works best for YOUR dept. the great debate over why fog nozzle or why smoothbore, why or why not 1 3/4", or 2" or 2 1/2" hose. Maybe with some input from this forum it will help a member understand why they carry a particular setup. And if it is truly the best for thier dept.
  12. I might be mistaken, but i was told that you couldnt live outside the state because of the pension laws. And it has been in the courts and upheld. fdny has enforced it, and as was stated if you get caught you can be dismissed. correct me please if I am wrong.
  13. Wow I am amazed at this statement thank god we have parade winning secrets when a brother asks for help
  14. I am moving this thread away from where it was ok here is the scenerio, full dept response for a structure fire (whatever it is for your dept) 1st due engine on scene with 1 officer, 1 mpo, 2 FF's and the chief shows up alone 5 total personal. NO DELAY FOR YOU AND THE CHIEF. rest of apparatus delayed for whatever reason homeowner states face to face with you, the company officer " no other people in house, I was cooking and bla bla bla my kitchen caught on fire and I called 911" chief orders a line stretched into structure, you as company officer know that there is an osha standard about 2 in and 2 out before making entry in an IDLH. MPO cant be part of 2 out as he is running the pumps, Chief is IC so he is n/a also. HERE IS THE QUESTION, DO YOU GO IN AND ATTACK THE FIRE OR DO YOU TELL THE CHIEF SORRY CANT GO IN UNTIL WE HAVE MORE PERSONAL ON THE SCENE? NOW REMEMBER WHEN YOU ANSWER, YOU CANT PICK AND CHOOSE WHICH STRUCTURES YOU WILL AND WONT ENTER, EVEN IF IT IS YOUR HOUSE.
  15. I made it so the homeowner told you to your face that the house was not occupied otherwise it is a no brainer for most of us. But I was looking for and got the other side. I worked with a FF who got promoted back in the 80's, went to FLSTP school, and all he got out of a month of training was "I need to have a million dollar rider (insurance policy), because I can be sued for anything I do as an officer".
  16. I was looking for both sides of it and yup, you may not like it in fact if you dont put up a a couple of WTF!!! you arent much of a firefighter in the first place BUT YOU OBEY THE ORDER AND STAY OUTSIDE
  17. In case those reading this didnt see my post on the other forum, I would be inside before the chief had the chance to tell me one way or the other (at least I hope) I was under the impression that the IC had his job to do and couldnt get involved in the 2 out I guess I was wrong on that part of my scenerio, Also I would like to have a 3 man entry team: a) to make the stretch easier so I would'nt have to be the backup FF if I am the officer (we all know what happens in the real world everyday w/ a 3 man engine or truck co, officer works as a ff instead of a boss) c)most fires are extinguished with either 100 gallons of water or a 100,000 gallons when there is a delay in putting water on the fire. 3 members can can a line into operation much faster than 2 all things being equal.
  18. ok new question, how many of you officers would go in and attack the fire and how many would stand by and wait for the next in apparatus I might not have made this clear you do have a full response dispatched they are not on the scene yet how about delayed due to weather or traffic
  19. maybe that is the difference between todays firefighters and when i started I didnt need a lawyer to tell me how to do my job. I would quit before standing on the front lawn looking the homeowner in the eye and waiting for more manpower. I have never thought about making that call before and I hope I never have to. As far as getting sued, once you accept any rank in the fire service, that comes with the territory. I am not saying anybody has to do it the way I will, follow the law/ sops, I just believe you have less chance of a problem with the building in the first minutes of a fire, (lightweight construction) than by waiting, giving the fire more burn time. I do work in an area where rigs do come unto the scene rather quickly
  20. it is a very tough law to follow, I took an oath to do the best I can bla bla bla, and if you are going to follow it you cant pick and choose, You stay outside and wait even if it is your house, your family, your neighbor etc. we can use all kinds of arguements and both sides can be right vacant boarded up building that the owner stopped caring for 10 yrs ago is different than the 2.5 frame around the corner, also I will will use this if I have to " i thought or felt someone was inside the structure" and then you can weave around the 2in/2out most of the runs where I work are a quick response, I feel if you can hold the fire while it is still small, you have a lesser chance of the things that can go wrong as the fire increases the cities / towns / villages/ fire districts get to pick and choose which NFPA guidelines they want to adopt, How many depts ride 4 ff's on each apparatus? If there is a Fatal fire there will be plenty of finger pointing to go around whichever way you choose. Chris or anybody else how about this one Engine 1 with 1 officer and 3 ff's on scene followed by the chief by himself, working fire, homeowner states she was cooking and it flared up in the kitchen, nobody else home. Chief orders you (the Lt) to stretch a line to the kitchen, your mpo isnt part of the 2in/2out the chief isnt part of the 2in/2out and you are aware of the law, what do you do???
  21. 2 in and 2 out are there to protect us granted, and osha etc, you would have to live with yourself making the decision to stay outside looking the homeowner in the face and "well we are waiting for the rest of the crew to show up" and yes that small fire that we could have put out is now out 2 windows or god forbid you didnt go in and someone could have been saved by acting quickly. too many lawyers in the world today
