"They're really going to have to start policing themselves if they don't want us coming up there every night and rousting them out of bed because somebody down the hall was smoking where they shouldn't have been or burning food," Brefere said. my 2 cents, the alarm should go right to a central dispatch, that should end the delayed notification, the school sets a policy that the fd endorses, that students be held accountable for their actions, but the big one is why the hell arent they already outside instead of in their dorms, when the fire alarm goes off. that the fd clearly has the right to demand. we dont have a lot of power over schools, but we can advise them that we will be notifing the state and in turn i was always told "insurance carrier" and they get the fastest results. correct me if i am wrong

could be the hardest transition yesterday i pulled the ceilings, today i have to lead others in doing it. think of officers you have dealt with in the past, take and use the good traits, make sure you dont repeat the bad traits. ***LEAD BY EXAMPLE*** BE FIRM BUT FAIR KNOW YOUR PEOPLE USE THEM TO YOUR FULL ADVANTAGE THEY CAN MAKE OR BREAK YOU YOU HAVE CROSSED THE LINE FROM WORKER TO SUPERVISIOR, BUT NEVER FORGET WHERE YOU CAME FROM.

ok so much discussion on where the white helmet should stand, i have a better one/ who should wear it and what kind of qualifications should he/she have

i am missing something here, why elect the guy chief if you need his expertise as a nozzleman, yeah he is a firefighetr and hopefully still able to do the job, but isnt the whole purpose of having a chief to lead the fireground not be knee deep in the middle of it and as far as a chief fighting a fire goes great, see it all the time, ONLY AFTER THE COMMAND POST IS FILLED BY A CHIEF, and IF the chiefs expertise is needed outside? If the Chief is standing next to me inside who the hell is outside minding the store i dont need him holding my hand, and if that is case one of us is in the wrong position. as far as the top chief being inside showing his knowledge, how are his asst chiefs or for that matter company officers ever going to lead when the boss is up his a$$ micromanaging the fire yes hopefully he still is a firefighter, and he should lead by example all the time including being the boss at an incident
-
I dont think it went to a chief cant be inside tangent, i think it is now who runs the fire and if only 1 chief is on scene he should not be directly involved in the firefight of course the more chiefs and officers the more control you can have over the situation inside and out. my biggest concern with a pump operator trying to do both the pumping and ic is unless you are one of those fancy depts with wireless headsets, how much noise is at the pumppanel are you going to hear all transmissions and if it is hard wired to the rig you are kind of tethered to the rig and may not be able to see whats going on if you are on the opposite sid eof the apparatus.

do you have a sop the the drivers of the engines dont have to wear gear? why? oh yeah i cant drive with all that stuff on, well the truck drivers do it to every call, if things are that bad manpower wise, that a chief(and i am not saying it even happened)has to go inside while i have able bodied drivers outside wearing windbreakers again something should be changed. plenty of brothers around great everybody gets to do his or her job, not enough people showing up, time to make some changes. we made changes here due to manpower cuts, drivers suit up for all box alarms
-
ALS i have a couple of questions about your statement, not enough people on the scene and its the chiefs fault for not preparing his men for what? they didnt show up 2. ICS has to be in place, correct but who is the ic if there is only firefighters who gets it then first due engine first due personal vehicle, senior guy, junior, guy with the biggest mouth, is it written in your sop's? 3. personal operating at different levels, when does this take place prior to the real deal? a chief talks to his officers, and the officers talk to the ff's if i as chief start asking ff's questions and skip over the ranking officers the chain of command went to $hit. and this whole topic started about a chief inside the fire building and lets throw in he was on the line, he cant see the whole pic any different than the guy coming from home still responding, but i can request a second alarm thru him, or tell him under control and so forth. Chiefs who micro manage are no better than Chiefs who do nothing, the officers should be teaching the firefighters how do do their job, the chief can mold the officer
-
let me set the record straight here, the IC can be inside a building 2 floors below the fire lobby whatever, he should not be involved in the firefight unless it is to save a life. as far as training your men, if with all the lieutenants and captains and chiefs and ex chiefs and deputy chiefs in Vol depts and so on if you have to leave a driver in charge, while you go inside as a chief to fight the fire again something is seriously wrong
-
this is a great topic. i see bp's rising before this is all done. res6cue you state that a Chief can go inside while a "driver "stays outside and runs both the pumps and the fire. i see a bigger problem than the Chief going inside the building. if a life needed to be saved and all Bets are off, why not set the pump at the correct pressure, take you chances that the pump will do its job and the driver goes in and leave the Chief who was elected to do the chiefs job where he belongs. yeah i know there are no bodies around during the day so fix that problem, and not create new ones, just imagine the lawsuit from a chief on the nob and the driver with all his work to do and god knows if he has any IC experience, running the fire and there is a serious injury or lodd. AND BELIEVE ME, I AM NOT A FAN OF THE SAFETY POLICE(OSHA) but this is 2006 arent we supposed to working a little smarter
-
how the depts with the mask up for all gas leaks policy? without the meter you aint gonna smell the problem, and also remember when venting that full of gas oder area, the reason it didnt ignite in the first place it may have been too rich, venting will bring it right thru the explosive range on the way back down be prepapred

i like to wait till you pop the door, better visability, etc. take the halligan and grab the bottom of the door as soon as it is popped, yeah you could take a feed but what if the fire is 3 rooms away not as much of a problem then. how to tell if the fire is right behind the door, open the nozzle on the top part of the door if it sizzles like a hot griddle ya might want to mask up first

NOBODY PREACHES BROTHERHOOD MORE THAN ME, OR LIKES A GOOD MEAL MORE THAN I DO, BUT DONT YOU AGREE THERE IS A SEVERE LACK OF EXPERENCE IN THE FIRE SERVICE TODAY? WITH THE VAST KNOWLEDGE OF THE MEMBERS OF THIS WEBITE ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT THE FIRE SERVICE WILL GET MORE THAN ENOUGH ANSWERS. AND THATS THE PROBLEM, SOME NEW FIREFIGHTERS DONT ASK THE QUESTIONS THAT WILL MAKE THEM BETTER FIREFIGHTERS, THEY ACT LIKE THEY KNOW IT ALL, OR EXPECT YOU TO TELL THEM AFTER THEY SCREW UP A BASIC EVOLUTION. YEAH THERE IS A PLACE FOR "STUFF" BUT ONLY AFTER YOU LEARN YOUR JOB, AND PERFECT YOUR SKILLS REMEMBER WE ARE STILL HAVING FIREFIGHTERS DIE AT ABOUT 1 EVERY 3 DAYS OR SO AND THAT IS THE POINT I WAS TRYING TO MAKE

1. try before you pry 2. determine which way the door swings toward you or away from you 3. what are the door and jamb made of wood, steel or a combo of both 4. what tools do you have to do the job with? irons or rabbit / hydra ram 5. irons, (halligan and flat head axe or maul) use the fork end of the halligan to strike the door about 2 inches from the lock side of the door from bottom to top as hard as you can. may loosen up the door locks to get easier access ie:cause a gap to form from the strikes, gap the door using the adz end of the halligan again from bottom to top, by now you should know which lock or locks are engaged, setthe forks about 6 inches above or below the locks, and this is where debate comes in bevel to the door or bevel to the jamb i have seen it used both ways i like bevel to door, unless i cant get the forks to get a good bite in the door, NOTE bevel to jamb might get you into the door easier but itgives you less leverage to force the door later. strike the adzend of the halligan with the flat head or maul holding the striking tool perpindicular to the halligan no baseball bat swings, until the halligan is set push the tool hard and fast towards the door and with any luck it will pop. be sure to secure the door somehow rope around the handle or better yet grab the bottom of the door with the halligan you already have in your hand. thats all i can think of my head hurts

MAKE SURE THE NOZZLEMAN HAS ENOUGH HOSE BE RIGHT ON THE BACK OF THE NOZZLEMAN 1. SO IF HE NEEDS TO TELL YOU SOMETHING YOU CAN HEAR HIM 2. TAKE THE BACKPRESSURE OFF THE LINE SO THE NOZZLEMAN CAN DO HIS JOB STAY ON THE SAME SIDE OF THE LINE AS THE NOZZLEMAN
-
OK EVERYONE POST YOUR TIPS FOR THE NOZZLEMAN POSITION: CHECK THE NOZZLE 1. IF IT IS A FOG/ COMBO NOZZLE, MAKE SURE IT IS ON STRAIGHT STREAM TWIST RIGHT TO FIGHT. 2. OPEN THE BAIL ALL THE WAY TO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ALL THE AIR OUT OF THE LINE 3. CHECK BOTH AGAIN AFTER YOU HAVE STREACHED TO THE LOCATION YOU ARE GOING TO USE IT a) TO MAKE SURE YOU DIDNT TWIST IT BACK WHILE YOU WERE MOVING IT to make sure you still have water, that your line is not pinched off 4. WHICH SIDE OF THE DOOR DO YOU STAY ON BEFORE IT IS OPENED? a) IF THE DOOR OPENS TOWARD YOU STAY ON THE LOCK SIDE IF THE DOOR OPENS AWAY FROM YOU STAY ON THE HINGE SIDE 5.ALL MEMBERS SHOULD BE ON THE SAME SIDE OF THE LINE 6. NOZZLE SHOULD BE 12 TO 18 INCHES IN FRONT OF YOU WHEN OPERATING

dont get me wrong you guys run a very good site, and i am not faulting you or any of the moderators, yes there is a place for "stuff". I see too many young ffs starting topics or responding to topics that dont benifit them as firefighters. I have been talking to other veterans of the fire service and we agree we have to do our part to start threads relating to the job. That is more of a fustration on my part, i dont care what color a rig is, who makes it , or what bells and whistles are on it can we drive it safely, pump it correctly, and place it where it is supposed to be. so maybe it more of what isnt being asked by the younger members than what is sorry for the rant
-
YOU ARE RIGHT I DID START THAT THREAD AND IT WENT NOWHERE, BUT AS A MEMBER OF THE FIRE SERVICE FOR OVER 25 YRS AND DAMN PROUD OF WHAT I HAVE DONE TO BETTER MYSELF AND EVERY FIREFIGHTER I HAVE TRAINED I THINK IT IS TIME TO PUT OUR PRIORTIES IN ORDER AND I WILL START THREADS ON TIPS AND TRAINING FOR THE FIREFIGHTERS WHO WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE JOB BUT ARE AFRAID TO ASK. I DIDNT THINK A THREAD ABOUT A DELI WAS WHY THIS SITE WAS DEVELOPED BUT HEY, MAYBE I AM THE ONE WHO IS WRONG

thanks for a good read, every firefighter should be aware of the tools he has at his disposal, and why!! there are still dept using fog nozzles in apt/ standpipe packs. and i hear the "fog' theory alway come up. Put the fire out and then worry about venting not the other way around. THERE ARE A LOT OF YOUNG FIREFIGHTERS READING THIS WEBSITE YET MOST OF WHAT I SEE IS ABOUT WHAT COLOR A RIG IS AND WHAT KIND OF LIGHT IS ON YOUR CAR, NOW IT IS ABOUT BEST FOOD SPOTS!! WAKE UP LEARN YOUR JOB EVERYBODY GOES HOME
-
we also added co meters to our ems bags so if we get the call for "flu like symptoms" and it really is co the meters go off
-
Hey Hudson what the hell is the control man and how do i get one of those!!! HAHAHA 3 Person engine company, driver, officer and nozzleman It was nice when we had the 4th man on all engines he was the "control" but somehow we and all the rest of the short handed depts get the job done!!! TIP 1, the officer should check the floor below to find out where the apt is, in case of lights out condition on the fire floor, ah while i am on a roll, check the staircase, if you are in scissor stairs you will be on the other end of the hallway on the next floor up as someone else mentioned this is where the TIC is needed door left open to fire apt, heavy smoke condition in the hallway, the TIC will find the heat/ fire venting from the apt. "That is cus we didnt take the time to suvey the floor below" or we got bad info from as to what apt it really was

it took me a couple of days to absorb these comments. Before i go into my rant, I have to ask a couple of questions. for those that "hate" people now that you are in the fire service, are you: 1. career or vol firefighters? 2. career or vol ems workers? 3. how much time do you have in your dept to have developed a hatred for your customers? I understand "burnout" on the ems side. at some point you are not doing anybody any favors by sticking around and treating people you hate!!!! LAST TIME I CHECKED NOBODY WAS HOLDING A GUN TO ANYBODY'S HEAD TO BE IN THE FIRE SERVICE OR EMS !!! IF YOU DONT LIKE IT LEAVE !! Just for the record I have been a career FF. for 25 yrs. and a EMT for 24 yrs. EVERYDAY THAT I GET TO PUT ON MY UNIFORM AND GO TO WORK MAKES ME SMILE!!!

your time to go puts me at the scene dealing with you and i didnt have a choice
