  1. Don't get me wrong guys, I agree liquor and firefighting DO NOT MIX. What I am saying is at events such as dinners etc where department money is not being spent on drinks should you be allowed to have it at your own or the members expence? What if you and a group are OOS and you either have a covering department or a detail to cover?
  2. What about fire company sponsored events? Friendship nights, installation dinner, picinics, softball etc? What about family parties that are sometimes held in the firehouse? Should drinking be allowed at those or if an outside group uses the place for a party?
  3. Amtrak which runs on the MNRR lines goes into Penn. Looks to me with LIRR trains ging to GCT it'll open some track soace in Penn. Shouldn't be too hard for MNRR to run a few trains down the west side tracks in Manhattan into Penn and back.
  4. with no hydrants in Garrison, the first engine drops 5" going in at the begining of a driveway all the way in and locates just outside the collapse zone. The second engine hooks up and supplies the first.
  5. I know Garrison uses the posted standard on the PCBES web site as a minimum
  6. Who's going to pay these new career fire departments? The Taxpayers? Are these the taxpayers who up in Philipstown voted against a raise in LOSAP from $10 to $25 and would cos tthe average homeowner $80 a year. Are these the same taxpayers who voted down building a new firehouse to replace an aging metal building thats rusting in North Highlands? See Seths pictures he posted the other day. The N. Highlands house is there in full rust. This would have cost the taxpayers in that district $140 a year. How much is a career department going to cost the taxpayers. Many towns the people are fed up with added taxes.
  7. I agree, I think most of the career guys I know in the county and FDNY are members of "all voplunteer " departments.
  8. The problem with the HELP trucks responding to a break down etc. with ambers is they are trying to get through trafic to get to the scene and nobobdy gets out of the way for them. One thing they do is push the vehicle off the road to open the lanes. Look at some of the roads like the Saw Mill. A breakdown in one of the lanes during rush hour and after 5 minutes you end up with 2 or 3 miles. Try and get thru. People don't move for us. Knowing this are red lights justified? Don't know, let's see the response from the normal list of opinionated.
  9. yfd910, Lets us also not menton how many career FF's are volunteers in their home towns.
  10. I'll be there, a little late, around 9:30 but count me in. Rob save me some wings!
  11. While there are good reasons to have this type of exhaust one drawback would be low trees. Up here in Northern Westchester and Putnam where you have to watch your top mounted ladders. I've never had it happen to me but I have heard where the low trees, especially in rain or snow have ripped ladders off trucks. Don't get me wrong, I think keeping the exhaust up high is a good thing but this type of system is not for everyone.
  12. Wasn't Keith's father a commissioner at one time while he was chief?
  13. Wish we knew you were up this way. Great shot of our station, would have brought out the rigs if we knew.
  14. As you can see from the picture it's an older metal building. As metal buildings age and rust they need more and more work and this ones no different. There's something going on in Philipstown. First they voted down raising Garrison's LOSAP going from $10 to $25. Now the North Highlands district turned down the new house. There are a few towns people who are very outspoken, know nothing about fire department management but expect more service and spend less.
  15. Those wires keep the rocket from taking off.?
  16. Mt Vernon always had ladder troubles. When they had the tillers, old Ladder 2 had hydrolic problems all the time. You could raise it but had to go under the turntable to let out the pressur to lower it half the time. Old Ladder 3 after the cab was totaled was a hybrid truck and never ran right. The city can't fix a rig but how much was the "circle"? Opps its not a circle Ernie says "ROUNDABOUT" You know the general public knows nothing about whats going on.
  17. Maybe its time to make this a "public" issue. Get the newspaper and tv news involved as it pertains to "public safety" or lack of it. Her's the headline" Mt Vernon Fire Trucks unsafe" or Fire trucks putting safety at risk? If its one thing that pushes politicians its publicity.
  18. T Yes there are even refresher courses in the state book but nobody gives them. Once a FF takes a course, gets that certificate thats it. Its from last years book but 80 thru 84 are refresher classes.
  19. T add to your list REFREASHER courses. As you said skills get old and we all tend to get CRS. If we had to refreash our skills every few years, a little more than local drills it would help. Think of who took FF1 when we first switched over or back to Basic, intermediate, advanced FF. You need to keep sharp. Train, retrain and start over. Learn it enough times and you'll remember it like it was natural.
  20. Great shots Seth. Sorry I could not make it.
  21. In Garrison we don't have any hydrants worth worrying about. A few at Graymore and Garrison institue. If it totals 20 its a lot. I'd have to count them up on the maps.
  22. In Putnam there is a daily list of what rigs are OOS but not hydrants. There are not to many hydrant systems I know of. Small systems within a development, villeges like Cold Spring here on the west end. Don't know about Peekskill but I've never heard an announcement on the radio tests. Maybe RWC130 or ALS can fill that in. I also know in Continental Village they work with the water department to do hydrant testing.
  23. I've responded on calls where PD called us off, I won't mention what agency. Not only was there fluids, PD said no injury yet EMS transpoted 2. Not everyone is an EMT/Paramedic and even then one car with one officer trying to control everything. Once FD is toned out we are as far as I know required to respond unles a FD officer tells us not to. We can tone down the response to 1 rig. Also I have seen it where a car is removed on a tow truck and catches fire due to an electrical short caused by the accident. Need to disconect the battery. Not every PD has ESU or enough officers to send 2 or 3 to an MVA.
  24. Kingsixx as for FD always resonding to MVA's whan was the last time PD pulled speedy dry from their trunk? The tow trucks will sweep off the pieces of the car but they don't carry speedy dry either. OK, lets leave the anti freeze, oil, and other fluids on the road to cause the next MVA which may be more serious and require extracation. An ounce of prevention brother.
