  1. I stand corrected on my earlier figure that 25% of LODD are associated with responding/returning. The number for year end 2007 is actually 29%! The full report is available here: http://www.nfpa.org/assets/files//PDF/NFPA..._fatalities.pdf Please take note in the vehicle related incident descriptions, MANY of those killed WERE NOT WEARING SEAT BELTS!!!
  2. I would like to know exactly what the "Deputy Commissioner" is getting paid for...anyway... An awful LOT of shenanigans have gone on, supposedly during her "watch", and right under her nose. Can you say Hmmmmmm?
  3. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family left behind, and to those emergency responders who tended those injured. Tragic scenes such as these become indelible memories.
  4. Many years ago we got dressed up on the hose bed, riding on top of the moving engine.... we selected a pair of boots from the racks hanging on the sides, put on a coat, grabbed helmet, then jumped down onto the rear step to enjoy the rest of the ride!
  5. Thank you for pointing that out! I have sent an email to the author of the article at LoHud, about that "coincidence".
  6. Many members have asked how to resize their photos to meet the forum 800x600 maximum file size requirements. I use a free program, Irfanview , for all my picture resizing needs . Download here Download and install, HINT: be careful during the install steps to un-check the options to install the Google toolbar and Google desktop, unless you want those. Once you have the program installed, open the picture file you want to work on. You can right click a file and use the open with selection dialog box, then choose Irfanview Or, open Irfanview, Click File/ open, browse to the picture you want and select it, then from the toolbar click Image select Resize/ Resample... Choose 800x600 Click OK. Click File/Save As... *THIS IS IMPORTANT* Here, you want to rename the file a different file name or choose another location than the original file, otherwise the original will be overwritten. Choose JPG as the file SaveAs type Additionally, you can easily crop any photo in Irfanview. Select a photo, Left click and drag to create a selection area, and choose Edit/Crop Selection Then click File/SaveAs... If desired, you can add a text overlay in a picture, to either create a Copyright © watermark and identify the owner, or add a description to the image. Left click and drag to make a selection box where you want, on the image. Click Edit / Insert Text Into Selection... Here you add the desired text, and can change the text font size and color. (I usually leave the Text is Transparent box checked) Click File/SaveAs... Once resized, cropped, etc, you can upload them. You can only upload a single file at a time. Using the Post Attachment Editor, browse to the file and select Open then click the green UPLOAD button. Repeat for multiple attachments. Then using Manage Current Attachments add your file(s) to your post. For multiple pictures, make a new line for each attachment and leave a space between attachments so they don't all run together. So, Now, Let's see your photos!
  7. After 38 years with ConEd, and the last 18 with Gas Operations, it's time to hang up my wrenches! After (IF) we sell the ranch, we're moving to Cape Cod. I guess I'll have to become a Sox fan, and join EMTBravo NewEngland! Here's what I'll be doing much of the time
  8. Too late Ron, thanks...I already lost it!! Joyce says HI ! Thanks for the well wishes, everybody! I'll still be around even after (if we ever) move.
  9. The fire was in Portchester, located about 150 feet from the Connecticut State Line. Map
  10. Regarding wearing a seat belt in the apparatus while responding to an alarm and trying to get one's gear on... It makes absolutely no difference if it's a confirmed structure fire, or whatever. There is no excuse for NOT wearing a seat belt in a moving vehicle. What IS a big deal, if the rig crashes and you don't have your seat belt secured, you can be killed. 25% of FF LODD deaths occur while responding to calls and returning to quarters. Many of these deaths are PREVENTABLE. Take a minute and watch the video linked below. Truck Rollover Video: Seat Belt vs. No Seat Belt. One occupant has a seat belt, the other does not. http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/images/volvo-crash-large.wmv
  11. This is one of those questions where the answer is not critical, I was just curious if anyone has any info as to why Fairview continues to utilize the low band radio frequency 46.26 for their communications operations, even though they conduct daily (1810) radio tests on the trunked radio system. Or are they still "shaking_it_out" for any issues prior to making the switch?
  12. Those pesky micro organisms are electrons! What happens over time is the tank steel (any steel tank) deteriorates due to galvanic corrosion, that is a result of dis-similar metals (stainless steel tank and cast bronze pump) both in a common electrolyte solution (water) that produces a tiny electric current. Stainless is not immune from this corrosion though it is more resistant than plain steel. The bronze pump casting metal is a more noble (less likely to be attacked) cathodic material than the tank itself, which is anodic. The current flows from the anode to the cathode and in the process the anode surface material is slowly removed. Eventually the tank wall material becomes thin enough in the weakest spots and leaks. It's a shame this rig has to be decomissioned for want of some cheap cathodic protection from the get-go.
  13. Congratulations! Post a picture, after you get a full night's sleep!
  14. Well deserved! Thanks for your contribution, Bill.
  15. Great shots, Mike. Thanks for sharing.
  16. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!
  17. Do you have a trunk tracking scanner, or have you just programmed in the trunked system frequencies into a regular scanner?
  18. The two scanners don't program the same way. For the 246 You have to set up two separate site systems, one with the trunk system parameters for the north and another for the south zones, and each programmed with the same talk groups you want to hear. Attached is a copy of my BC246t WC trunked system file. 246WCTrunked.txt copy it to your desktop and rename it to 246WCTrunked.mem and then upload it to your scanner using the BuTel ARC246 software (file/open system file/
  19. We launched a trial site-wide "Live Chat" the other night, and for the most part, it was a success! There are still a few minor system bugs but we'll get them worked out in due time. We would like to look into perhaps establishing a weekly chat, and want to get your feedback as to what would be a good day and time to hold this event. What do you think about scheduling these, say, on Tuesdays at 2100 hrs? (at this hour our "Left-coast" members might be better able to join in) Would another day be better, Fridays..Saturdays? Also, how about having a weekly chat discussion topic, one selected in advance by the members? Anyone who wants to can log into the Live Chat system at anytime, and anyone can join in! Once logged in you can either remain in the public room, or if desired, take your chat private. This is a very cool, new added feature! Enjoy! http://www.emtbravo.net/index.php?autocom=chatsigma
  20. I don't see anywhere in that linked article where there is even a HINT of any agency jurisdictional issue. I would be really interested in hearing where did you come up with that "finding" unless of course, the newspaper article was edited by the author between when you posted, and I read it.
  21. HUH? are we all watching the same clip? The way I see it, the biker had no choice but to maneuver left to avoid the cop, who was originally standing in the center of the road and came over into HIS lane of travel, where he then slammed on him.
  22. http://www.emtbravo.net/index.php?showtopi...st&p=144644 It looks like it was a quick and easy, very effective vehicle stabilization job using inexpensive cribbing material with strut-jack stabilization set up using 4x4 timber stock and a ratchet strap. (great shots, Mike)

  24. You can't often use point-and-shoot camera with "auto" settings, especially in low light conditions and get good results. The brightness "tells" the camera what exposure combination to use, and, well, you see the results. Preferably you need to use manual settings if the camera permits. In low light set the ISO higher, and adjust the shutter speed slower and open up the aperture to get your exposure. Two problems that crop up here are a higher ISO setting also introduces more "noise" and a slow shutter speed increases the chances for blur from camera and subject movement. The main problem with consumer digital cameras is the 1-1/8 inch (and smaller)size of the image sensor, vs a full frame (24x36mm) sensor in a DSLR camera. More mega-pixels is not always the answer, either, too many pixels crammed into too small a sensor does not improve results. You will have to practice with your exposure and shutter settings to get your image. Several combinations of settings will give the same exposure but with a different quality.
