It looks like Galveston and Houston are right in the path of this one. It's no Katrina, but a strong Cat 2 storm is almost as damaging as a weak Cat 3. In addition to the 110 MPH winds, the flooding storm surge of nearly 20 feet of seawater is going to wreak havoc on the coastal area at landfall. This is a very significant petroleum refinery area in Texas. I hope that everyone got out already.

In a city of more than eight million, you're bound to have a few loose-nuts running around. Most are harmless, however some can become dangerous under the right circumstances.

An RFID device of the design embedded in a card only has a readable range of a few feet, at best. To think that the chip's movement could be tracked by a satellite or otherwise, is silly.

That solves only ONE problem, but it actually creates another, bigger problem...who is gonna pay? The up-state and back-woods towns have no money, and that exact same situation probably can be applied just about everywhere else, even here in affluent Westchester. NY'ers are probably among the most taxed people in the country, if not the most. My property/school/county/village taxes have easily doubled in 12 years since I moved into my house, and I only have a small piece of the rock. I can't imagine how much more we would have to pay to include costs for full-time paid FD and/or EMS.

We're drifting away from the original topic, and it appears the discussion over Kentland has run it's productive course.

For those who might be interested in adopting a dog or puppy, NY-PetRescue.org is sponsoring an adoption day, this Saturday, 9-6-08 12PM-3PM at Petsmart, in the Kohl's Shopping Center 421 Boston Post Road Port Chester, NY. Pet Rescue is a 501 ( c )(3) non-profit animal rescue organization founded in 1982. http://www.ny-petrescue.org/events.php http://www.ny-petrescue.org/dogs.php I have three adorable foster puppies who will be available for adoption at this event. http://www.ny-petrescue.org/AnimalDetail.php?AnimalId=3067 If you are interested in adopting a dog, please fill out an adoption application online before coming to the adoption day. http://www.ny-petrescue.org/application/applicant-1.php Thanks!
-
Hi John. The 4 pups we fostered have all been adopted, as were most of the other puppies that were there Saturday. We adopted one of 'em ... that makes three rescue's for us! There are others still available, check on the website, http://www.ny-petrescue.org/ The listings change pretty much on a daily basis. If you see a dog or cat that you think you might like, call and/or send an email. There is no need to wait for an adoption day if interested in rescuing any one of them. They sometimes come and go quickly. The next adoption-day has not been finalized, yet.
-
They sure are! Thanks! The adoption day is still on for tomorrow, for now, even with the expected inclement weather. If that should change, I will post an update with information here. |||

I'm guessing he successfully popped the air-bubble, anyway. Sheesh.....

AAA urges drivers to: * Slow down when driving near schools, bus stops and playgrounds * Take special care to obey lower speed limits in school zones * Make sure to stop for school buses with flashing red lights * Never use a handheld cell phone while driving - it's the law * Drive carefully in bad weather

Here's an interesting one that made the Email-rounds recently: How old is Grandpa??? One evening a grandson was talking to his grandfather about current events. The grandson asked his grandfather what he thought about the shootings at schools, the computer age, and just things in general. The Grandfather replied, 'Well, let me think a minute, I was born before: ' television ' penicillin ' polio shots ' frozen foods ' Xerox ' contact lenses ' Frisbees and ' the pill There were no: ' credit cards ' laser beams or ' ball-point pens Man had not invented: ' pantyhose ' air conditioners ' dishwashers ' clothes dryers ' and the clothes were hung out to dry in the fresh air and ' man hadn't yet walked on the moon Your Grandmother and I got married first, . . . And then lived together. Every family had a father and a mother. Until I was 25, I called every man older than me, 'Sir'. And after I turned 25, I still called policemen and every man with a title, 'Sir.' We were before gay-rights, computer- dating, dual careers, daycare centers, and group therapy. Our lives were governed by the Ten Commandments, good judgment, and common sense. We were taught to know the difference between right and wrong and to stand up and take responsibility for our actions. Serving your country was a privilege; living in this country was a bigger privilege. We thought fast food was what people ate during Lent. Having a meaningful relationship meant getting along with your cousins. Draft dodgers were people who closed their front doors when the evening breeze started. Time-sharing meant time the family spent together in the evenings and weekends-not purchasing condominiums. We never heard of FM radios, tape decks, CD's, electric typewriters, yogurt, or guys wearing earrings. We listened to the Big Bands, Jack Benny, and the President's speeches on our radios. And I don't ever remember any kid blowing his brains out listening to Tommy Dorsey. If you saw anything with 'Made in Japan' on it, it was junk The term 'making out' referred to how you did on your school exam. Pizza Hut, McDonald's, and instant coffee were unheard of. We had 5 &10-cent stores where you could actually buy things for 5 and 10 cents. Ice-cream cones, phone calls, rides on a streetcar, and a Pepsi were all a nickel . And if you didn't want to splurge, you could spend your nickel on enough stamps to mail 1 letter and 2 postcards. You could buy a new Chevy Coupe for $600, . . But who could afford one? Too bad, because gas was 11 cents a gallon. In my day: ' 'grass' was mowed, ' 'coke' was a cold drink, ' 'pot' was something your mother cooked in and ' 'rock music' was your grandmother's lullaby. ' 'Aids' were helpers in the Principal's office, ' 'chip' meant a piece of wood, ' 'hardware' was found in a hardware store and ' 'software' wasn't even a word. And we were the last generation to actually believe that a lady needed a husband to have a baby. No wonder people call us 'old and confused' and say there is a generation gap... And how old do you think I am? I bet you have this old man in mind...you are in for a shock! Are you ready ????? This man would be only 59 years old!!!

This could be interesting...found this live scanner feed from New Orleans Parish: http://la.scanamerica.us/index.php?county=Orleans

Another major concern is the off-shore oil and gas platforms in the gulf, as well as associated land-based terminals shutting down... the price of gas and oil will probably increase (again!) due to the supply curtailments, never mind if facilities get damaged, like from Katrina...

Parking a marked vehicle improperly while conducting any business that's NOT on an emergency or incident, is generally uncalled for. It might be considered self-ish by some, but then there are others who could care less. By the way, I wonder how many here even know what a Gin Mill is?

So.....When is the wetdown????

Funny (peculiar... not ha-ha) thing about hydrogen...when it ignites, it explodes. Pure hydrogen in oxygen flame is nearly invisible to the human eye, one needs an ultra-violet detector to "see" the burning gas. How many have those?

It's really too bad this happened. The prospect of relocating and restoring the building was an admirable undertaking. Anyhow, now Peekskill can concentrate on moving forward with the plans for construction of the NEW fire station!
