  1. The Saw Mill RIVER Parkway floods routinely in Thornwood's jurisdiction (and others), shutting the road for extended periods of time. Additionally their district covers an area including parts of the Kensico Reservoir as well.
  2. From this week's North County News.com http://www.northcountynews.com/local_towns/peekskill.asp This looks like it could be a beautiful facility for PFD. image from linked article.
  3. yep, A lot of history, right there, uncle......
  4. A News 12 story broadcast this evening (Mon.Oct 6th) raises several questions, focusing on the City's hiring practices, particularly regarding background checks pertaining to new hires. An allegation has been raised in the report which states that some of the new FD candidates may in fact have criminal records, and these blemishes were only discovered by the City 3 days after the individuals were actually sworn in. The names of the individuals were not released on the newscast, but one of the individuals has what might be referred to as an extensive history.
  5. Unfortunately these types of things will probably happen more frequently especially if the economy continues to slide and high energy prices remain. We can probably expect to see a spike in the number of fires due to the use of candles for light, and CO incidents because of gas stoves being used or heat, and generators for power, by those who have the no clue to the dangers.
  6. Coleman fuel is clear, white gas that's similar to gasoline, but much cleaner burning, and is designed for liquid gas camp stoves and lanterns. What he said.
  7. The US gov't has been regulating the US financial markets since forever, BUT, they had no control over the "credit default swaps" an unregulated financial "insurance" derivative to hedge risk ultimately involving trillions of dollars. Add in all the defaulting sub-prime mortgages, and these were responsible for the current financial institution implosions. Had the gov't previously managed to regulate these "insurance" schemes , we probably would not be having this conversation right now.
  8. I haven't filled out a job application in several decades, (and don't plan to, anytime soon, either) but isn't there a line where they usually ask: Have you ever been arrested, or convicted of a crime? And if yes, give details? For MV officials to act surprised speaks volumes...
  9. This year's theme is There are a lot of good links in the NFPA site to guide those wishing to learn more. http://www.nfpa.org/itemDetail.asp?categor...mp;itemID=34420 PS: Change the batteries in your Smoke and CO detectors! Get the word out!
  10. I see they (Q3)have their "Hi-Vis" gear for the driver and officer handy.
  11. No pun intended, but those are some sobering thoughts....
  12. A little history: Those glass cylinders likely contained Carbon Tetrachloride, which was (among other things) an effective extinguishing agent and was commonly used back-in-the-day. When deployed into a fire, the chemical vaporized and created a dense vapor blanket to smother the flames. It was eventually determined to be highly toxic, since the chemical reaction in a fire also produced phosgene gas, which was widely used in combat during WW-I as a chemical warfare poison gas!
  13. According to GAO-05-173 FHWA Oversight, "The 3 million miles of roads that are generally ineligible (for Federal aid) are functionally classified as local roads or rural minor collectors." So, the way I read it, this applies to any Interstate highway system, State road ( County???) right-of-way that could be considered eligible for federal monies, and while operating on these roads one would fall under the worker visibility requirement.
  14. The Westchester County Parade Judges Association has not posted the results on their site yet. I would imagine the list will be published any day, now. http://www.wcpja.com/
  15. KUDOS to all who participated, and to OFD and the parade committee for putting on an outstanding event!!! Congrat's to all the winners! Well done Montrose! Your guys/gals looked sharp right from stepping off.
  16. Dennis, thanks for bringing this up, we had a discussion on this topic recently in this thread: http://www.emtbravo.net/index.php?showtopic=27019 This law regarding vests and worker visibility will be in effect in about two months. I would hope that everyone has already ordered / obtained the required approved equipment for their personnel.
  17. IA's get deleted when they're NOT incidents. Let me add, so do certain other unproductive posts regardless where they are, for that matter.
  18. Emergency sirens are just that, but this subject reminds me of the gripes people make when they move into a neighborhood near an airport and then turn around and complain about having to hear airplanes all the time. sheesh.
  19. These people were ravaged by a powerful category 2 hurricane. A VERY large swath of Texas was for all intents and purposes destroyed. Some areas still have no power, or water, and it will be weeks or more, just cleaning up the mess. I think that we can send along some basic supplies out to help some of "OUR OWN" in need. If you can't help out, then move along. Next. Here is an example of what was going on during the storm:
  20. Maybe a court officer's weapon will "accidentally discharge" during sentencing, and save taxpayers a lot of money.
  21. Nice site. (Check your PM inbox)
  22. The deadline to file an application is now a week away, Sept 22nd. For those who may be interested, LINK
  23. WOW! it looks to be in EXCELLENT shape! Can't wait to see it!
  24. ...And they say not even GOD can hit a 1 iron.... It never ceases to amaze me, how many stories you hear even in this day and age, about people taking shelter under a tree in a thunderstorm....
