  1. First off, don't necessarily believe everything you read posted here in an IA, as gospel. There are rare times some departments might not get a rig able to roll to a call. It could be there was no qualified driver arriving to the station, or something as simple as the truck wouldn't start. If you want to speculate, maybe it was the the eightieth time this same location came in, and everyone said screw it.
  2. Thanks for sparing me searching for my reading glasses! Click on your user-name from the top of the forum home page and select "My Profile", then choose "Edit My Profile" Under General account Settings you then select "Change my photo" A pop-out screen appears which allows you to browse to and select a suitable image file, then click "done" If your current browser security settings blocks or otherwise doesn't support this, try using a different browser.
  3. I can only imagine the flurry of blame being pointed on how come critical valves necessary to isolate the break won't operate. Let's see... could it be that routine valve maintenance took the brunt of budget hits over the years?
  4. In my opinion no fire department should ever "reset" an activated fire/smoke/water-flow alarm condition, commercial, residential, or otherwise. It should be entirely the responsibility of the property/system owner to have the system restored to proper function, and only by someone who is competent in doing so. There is entirely too much liability. This is not to say that there aren't knowledgeable fire department personnel who may in fact be familiar with a particular system or control panel, but God forbid something goes wrong afterward, the onus invariably falls on "who was the last person to touch it?". I would not want to be that person.
  5. A civilian commissioner may in fact have no authority on a scene, but if an employee operating under their direction is ordered to do his or her bidding, it had better happen, or said employee will invariably face a very uncomfortable future.
  6. Happy Birthday, Boss!
  7. Don't your by-laws spell out minimum training and participation for membership such as having X number of hours of hands-on / drill time, or other attendance stipulations to remain active? If many of the "older" guys you're talking about are "lifers" who only show up for the glory jobs, they must be exterior-only, otherwise they would need to meet much more stringent requirements in order to be "covered" as an interior firefighter. It can be difficult to attract and retain volunteers in the fire service anymore, but everyone needs to be on the same page when it comes down to working safely at a job, and in reality the only way to do that is with hands on.
  8. They could be some of the contractor crews who were brought in to do repair work as part of ConEd's union lockout "contingency" plan. The tentative union contract agreement that was just negotiated has not been officially ratified yet, so there is always still a chance of a strike or union labor walkout.
  9. The probability of severe weather later today seems to have had an impact on the ConEd lockout. Apparently union crews will be reporting back to work this afternoon in preparation for potential system damage which could cause power outages, while the union and company continue to hammer out contract negotiations. It seems Gov. Cuomo may have had a hand in (pressuring) expediting talks enabling a return to work in advance of expected outages!
  10. WOW!!! I just want to say THANKS!!! to those who have stepped up to help with this drive! We still have a ways to go to reach our goal, but you guys have really given this a great start! Please keep up the great show of support! Every little bit helps take some of the pressure off!
  11. RIP. His candor and contributions to our community here will be greatly missed. Condolences to his family, friends and coworkers.
  12. Seth had been accepting checks toward donations in the past, unfortunately current circumstances preclude that as an option. While we are working on a solution for a method to accept checks again, and only as a suggestion, perhaps you could persuade another member to submit a donation on your behalf, and we can give you the proper recognition once the transaction is completed. Once the dust settles hopefully we can establish a permanent method for accepting paper checks, cash or money orders. On behalf of the entire staff, Thanks again to all of those members who have been kind enough to contribute and help support our community. Your generosity is truly appreciated! Jack
  13. Just a reminder, folks, for those who haven't already done so, please consider making a donation to help support the EMTBravo family of websites. Any amount is appreciated and will do a big part in keeping EMTBravo online. You can rest assured 100% of your generosity will go towards funding site operating expenses. Nobody is putting any money in their pockets, every penny received goes toward software licensing and web hosting and server costs, these recurring expenses never go away! If you do decide to make a donation but don't wish to have the EMTBravo Investor badge showing on your profile, send me an Email or message me on the board, and I can make that go away. I just want to personally say Thanks! to all of you who have already stepped up to help out, now, and in the past Together we can do this. Jack
  14. Things would have been a little different if there had been a fire onboard or if the bus landed upside down in a reservoir...there are many possibilities.
  15. I can't think of a more deserving preferred candidate hiring pool. Way to go!
  16. Yes, they did, 3 years ago, and afterward, many of the politicians (who could have ACTUALLY taken the study and DONE SOMETHING about it) stood around patting each other on the back, congratulating themselves about such a fine study they had commissioned.
  17. It appears the village and fire company inaction's might have opened the door for a lawsuit against them which they may be unable to successfully defend.
  18. Carrying flowers is done to honor departed members. Traditionally a sterling silver horn (trumpet) is used during presentation, such as in a formal ceremony or parade. Work horns (trumpets) were brass, nickel, silver plated brass or painted tin.
  19. That's easy. The direction of that topic of discussion would depend entirely on whether he was paid, or not. LOL
  20. Newspaper reader comments crack me up sometimes, "they could've shot him in the arm or leg...." "he was the nicest kid" ....They "could have arrested the dude that died he didn't have to kill him!" ...and on and on....
  21. It's reassuring to know that there are detectors sensitive enough to activate in response to such minute quantities of radioactive material present.
  22. We had to do some housekeeping in here. Off topic posts have been removed, further violations of forum rules will be dealt with accordingly.
  23. Tonight is the night! Stop by, of if you are unable to attend, drop off a donation at 60 Control. Every little bit helps!
  24. Overall I think it's a pretty shortsighted move, by doing this there will be that many less eyeballs available for their online advertisers. I admit, I'll miss being able to catch up on some of my old hometown news there, but there are also many other free online news outlets available.
