  1. From what I can gather, the stipend money was agreed to by the town when Eric took over the management / supervisory functions of the Water and Parks departments, in addition to his existing duties at Highway. Kudos to Eric for his stance, plus for doing a bang-up-job of saving Yorktown taxpayers a ton of money! Message to other county, city, town and village governments: are you paying attention?
  2. This topic came to mind with the recent thread regarding the Provincetown, MA ladder truck roll-over accident. Questions which the investigation will eventually answer, remain: It may have been an operator error, or there may have been a mechanical failure that caused the wreck. One thing I'm fairly certain of, probably very few people pay attention to the age of their vehicle tires. To be sure, tire tread, inflation, and general wear and appearance are probably routinely checked by many, but who takes a look at the age of the tire itself, and further, makes a determination to remove what appears to be a "good" tire from service based on that age? ABC News 20/20 ran a segment on older tires being sold, brand new tires that basically were near the end of their useful life, even though they were never even used! "As rubber ages, it increases the risk of the tread separating from the tire, causing a sudden blowout and loss of control of the vehicle." "The 20/20 report said some experts are now recommending an expiration date of only 6 years from the date of manufacture, whether a tire has been in use on a vehicle or has been sitting in a warehouse." A 10 minute video segment: http://abcnews.go.com/Video/playerIndex?id=4826897 The age of an emergency vehicle tire should be taken into account when figuring replacement maintenance. A lot of these large, heavy trucks have relatively low mileage in some quieter departments, and they sit there for a long time with tires looking like brand new that may be potentially dangerous! There is so much information out there. http://www.safetyresearch.net/tires.htm http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=t...G=Google+Search
  3. That last unit photo (in the album) looks strikingly similar to a Dodge Ram Van.
  4. From the photos it's hard to tell. There is an intersection with a traffic control light and multiple vehicles involved, so it may be a failure on the part of one or more of the vehicle operators to yield and/or the rig proceeding through the intersection. Judging by the damage the Jeep and white Sable look like they took the brunt of the impact. Google says: http://capitalnews9.com/content/top_storie...ny/Default.aspx

  10. Check out the Westchester County Bureau of Purchase & Supplies website for updates: http://blog.westchestergov.com/index.php?o...&Itemid=330 In addition to public auction and sealed bid offers, they sell stuff on as well!
  11. Disgusting behavior. It's one thing for fans to be really happy that your team won, but there is no excuse whatsoever when it comes down to civil disobedience and street violence, escalating into rioting. I say to those punks who got their heads cracked, you deserved it. They should have opened up a deuce and a half with a one inch bore and "cleaned the street"!
  12. Sour grapes? perhaps...however, one must keep in mind the "closest" resource may not always necessarily be the best choice. So, how is that corrupt? Similar response requests are probably more common than one might think...and Dutchess is not alone.
  13. Congratulations Mike! Nice Work, everybody!
  14. According to a Ch 12 News report on TV this evening, the now suspended (WITH PAY) Mt Vernon probie has family ties to Chief Everett, and a brother who is "on the job". No criminal charges have been filed (as of the time of the broadcast) Nothing on LoHud...no surprise. "The rug" is ready ....for sweeping yet another questionable action under... [edit] LoHud. com has an article now: http://www.lohud.com/article/20081108/NEWS...345/1018/NEWS02
  15. Here was the original article in LoHud: http://www.lohud.com/article/20081008/NEWS02/810080356 Exactly how much negative behavior is allowed under Zero tolerance? Let's review: The academy was in it's fourth week out of sixteen weeks, and one probie candidate gets the boot (pun intended) expelled under potentially criminal actions towards another probie, and now they want to train him in-house to give him another chance? Excuse me, Mr. Commissioner, with all due respect, doesn't threatening someone (on or off the job) sound like HARM to you? Class B Misdemeanors are okay under "zero-tolerance"? How about a felony? That okay, too? Or is Zero-tolerance reserved for those who criticize or disagree with you?
  16. ..."Timmy" doesn't play well with others... (no offense TR54) Why would anyone in their infinite wisdom want to coddle to a known menace? On probation, no less? It's fairly obvious by now, that we have jurisdictions that will do whatever they damn well please, irrespective of whether it's right, wrong, indifferent, or even legal. Where does it end? or doesn't it?
  17. If the allegation is true, then after being summarily fired, he should be brought up on 2nd or 3rd degree menacing charges, or as appropriate depending on the nature of the threat.
  18. ...From that angle, Can't tell if it even has wheels..... (LOL)
  19. Maybe it already does, and he air-brushed it out?
  20. Many great shots of a spectacular blaze. Thanks for sharing. Stubborn fire under any circumstances, and a shame another historical structure is lost.
  21. Mention Fair Labor Standards Act to your employer.
  22. It's a NY Slang term. Before that, they were called "meat wagons" which were run by funeral homes, since they were the only business who had horizontal transportation capabilities, and they did not run with trained attendants, like today.
  23. It looks as if the author of the article has a proverbial "axe to grind" using the kitchen fire incident as nothing more than an opportunity to stir the pot concerning the "continuing rift" between the paid and vollie companies. Otherwise, there is no big news: Small kitchen fire, resident treated for smoke inhalation, end of story. Next?
  24. I'm no lawyer, but as the plaintiff I'm not sure what the Chief's lawsuit expects to accomplish, since his injury is largely unrelated to the defendant department's accountability (or lack thereof) in the allegations being presented. He can sue for his injury, but what do the circumstances surrounding the fatality have to do with that? Now, if it was the family of the deceased firefighter who were pursuing this case as a wrongful death, then that would be a whole different story.
  25. Water flowing into storm drains and catch basins don't get any treatment, they are just surface water collection and removal systems. If you were to pull a sanitary sewer manhole cover and dump into there, only then it would go through a treatment plant, but there is no need to treat the melted snow water coming out of this machine.
