  1. As far as I know, it's still an ongoing, active project. I was a part of that original "volunteer" team from ConEd, up until I retired last July. Several ConEd employees were selected, having knowledge of the electric distribution system as well as fire department operations familiarity. We were given access to a ConEd owned laptop kept in a secured supply locker provided by 60. In the event of a widespread overhead electric system emergency, team members would mobilize and we would staff a desk by the Lieutenants area in the radio room at 60. Each team member was given security clearance to log-in to ConEd's Mainframe Emergency Control System via an encrypted VPN connection over the laptop. We would be able to generate trouble tickets electronically and monitor status of existing jobs progress in the system, in real time. We also had a special hotline number to the Electric Operations Dispatch Center to expedite crews to those locations classified as priority jobs. In the three, some odd years I was "active" on the team, I think we were mobilized only once or twice for widespread storm damage response. I never got the opportunity to man the post at 60 due to my work schedule during those events (I was already involved with other emergencies on my own regular rotating shift). I firmly believe it is a great idea to have this inter-agency cooperation to facilitate communications between 60 Control and ConEd's Emergency Control Center during storm related events. Fortunately there were only a very few times the "task force" was activated since it's inception.
  2. Good guesses.
  3. A new scanner will likely have better selectivity due to improved filter circuitry than your old one, but there is still a possibility you could get bleed-over from very strong local transmissions. Generally speaking, you get what you pay for: the more you pay for a scanner, the better the selectivity and sensitivity.
  4. On behalf of the staff of EMTBravo, I would like to remind the membership to kindly refrain from posting jokes or material referencing race, religion, nationality, ethnicity, etc. that might be potentially offensive to other members. We've gotten some feedback recently: "Trust me I am all for a good joke but sometimes certain ones should not be said in a forum with a large public interest." Another concerned member observed: "Everyone feels differently about things and in this day and age, it's not uncommon for people to take offense. E-mails are the best way to handle jokes, not a forum like this." Spot on. I think we need to be sensitive to that. Thanks for understanding.
  5. As was mentioned, some CB'ers, AKA citizens band radio users, also use call signs that are very similar to ham licenses. (although a FCC license is no longer required to operate a CB radio) Some over the road truckers have been known to use powerful (and illegal) signal amplifiers on their rig's CB radio to boost the signal for greater range. This can cause a severe bleed over of their transmissions on adjacent channels, and might be what you're hearing.
  6. If you or any other members need assistance on how to modify their profile page, just PM myself or any other staff member. We'll be glad to help. Remember that any personal information or e-mail address submitted during registration is used only for confirming your registration details, password, and to provide members information and updates regarding the website. (and for sending new passwords should you forget your current one). This information is accessible only to the site administrator and select staff, and is strictly limited for use only as described above.
  7. I'm sorry you feel you have to retreat to the sidelines simply because all pages here are essentially in the public domain, visible and accessible to everyone. There is nothing in your member profile that identifies who you are, or where you work. You can limit or remove additional personal information from your public profile, such as affiliation, past experience, etc.
  8. Good one, Capt. I would have been similarly annoyed if someone pulled a stunt like that at my house. That guy needs help.
  9. Maybe it's a problem with the scanner, not properly rejecting transmissions on adjacent channel frequencies?
  10. What a shame. When will these kids learn? ....abusing alcohol and hazing can have dire consequences....
  11. "Fridge" Magnets would be cool...
  12. If he had interconnected fire/smoke alarms, that could have made a difference in him hearing an activation in another part of the house.
  13. Agreed. Under certain circumstances photos published of people, dead or alive, can be an invasion of their privacy, and as noted in this case, in very poor taste.
  14. Try SpyBot Search & Destroy (free) Spybot S&D (donationware): Download it here: www.safer-networking.org/ www.1usa.com/downloads/spybotsd/index.html a) Download and install Spybot S&D. b ) Click on "Update" in the left column. c) Click on "Search for Updates." d) Select a download location (usually one close to you). e) Click "Download Updates" and wait of the updating process to finish. f) Check that all Internet Explorer (web browser) windows are closed. g) Click "Search and Destroy" in the left column. h) Click "Check for Problems." i) Have Spybot remove/fix all the problems it identifies in RED. The items not listed in red should not be touched at this time. Ad-aware (free version available): Download it here: www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/ majorgeeks.com a) Download and install the latest version of Ad-Aware. If you previously had Ad-aware installed, grant the installer permission to uninstall it when it asks. b ) As the installation ends, leave these boxes checked: (i) Perform a full scan now, (ii) Update definition file now, (iii) Open the help file now. Click "finish." c) Close all programs except Ad-Aware. d) Wait for the scanning process to complete. (Optionally, glance through the Ad-aware Help window that has popped up.) Close Ad-aware Help when done. e) Click "Next." f) Click "Critical Objects" and select all the items found for removal. ("Removal" actually puts things in quarantine, so you can generally recover them if you need to.) g) Click "Privacy Objects" tab. "MRU list" refers to history lists of "Most recently used" files for different programs. You can review this now and note anything that appears suspicious to post a question about later. h) Reboot your computer. i) From Start, All Programs, Lavasoft Ad-aware, rerun Ad-aware. j) Repeat steps ( c ) through (i) until no more items are found If you removed any malware, reboot and repeat the scans that revealed it earlier. This is to make sure that the malware has not managed to reinstall itself. If the malware did come back, use this sequence of actions: a) Turn off System Restore b ) Repeat the cleaning procedure used earlier c) Reboot d) Only then turn on System Restore e) Reboot f) Rescan courtesy of DSLR
  15. It looks like an old engine from Scarsdale.
  16. Contacts are not recommended for use while wearing a respirator in a potentially IDLH environment. Mask manufacturers make a prescription lens "spectacle kit" that clips inside the mask, so you get your vision correction and the face seal remains intact. It pops right in or out, depending on need.
  17. I hope he took the rental collision/accidental damage insurance coverage.
  18. Someone might need the next size larger mask- the eyebrows extend into the facepiece seal area....
  19. The most popular fully-rugged laptop used by many Police, Fire, Utilities, Etc, is the Panasonic Toughbook. They're not cheap, but they are certainly durable. We use them at Con Ed for in-vehicle CAD (emergency dispatching) and all field service paperwork and forms are electronic. There is a LOT more to it than just hardware, including vehicle mounting and installation, you need to buy a software package that includes the healthcare applications medical professionals will need. You want something that is compatible with the hospitals' data systems for easy access to your patients medical status that was entered by your EMT's. Will you have wireless (cellular) connectivity, so patient info can be transmitted to the doctors to help them prepare for your patient's arrival?
  20. Briarcliff Manor Volunteer Fire Department vintage videos! Please click on the links in order, (Go To Blazes part 1, first). Thanks to the Scarborough Engine Company (BMFD Engine 92) for permission to post the above. It would be awesome if some of the apparatus in these videos were still around! While visiting the Scarborough Engine Company website, take a moment and browse the other site shortcuts. Also please consider supporting the Ron Jankowski 92 Engine Memorial Fund. T-shirts are for sale and they also are collecting donations.
  21. Basically, Google has several hits on the topic of SWATing
  22. RIP, Ron. My deepest condolences to Ron's family, friends, and colleagues at Briarcliff Manor Volunteer Fire Department. What a shock to hear this sad news. Ron was always able to bring a smile to your face. He was a member here since 2004.
