The good news is Seth was (once again) able to repair the server issue that caused another site outage. :angry: The bad news is the server memory got maxed out. The good news is we are getting closer to our year-end operating expense fundraising goal. The bad news is the remaining money needed is still out there in your pockets. I was also wondering about the specs on the pump. The submerged pump must be pretty substantial if it can maintain sufficient water supply through a large diameter soft suction. I'm guessing the water level is deeper than atmospheric draft can lift successfully.

It seems there was a software error, the shout edit feature was never "taken away", portions of that forum module somehow failed and stopped working. Seth has upgraded the shoutbox software and things should be fully operational again. Can someone please try editing their shout and report back if it was successful, or not. Thanks

Two clueless judges getting involved in one FD related case....how good are the chances of something like THAT happening?!

The "tone" of the original post and what I read into it was NYSEG was looking for free labor from area volunteer departments. There is nothing wrong with asking for or giving assistance during this event, In fact some areas would still be dead in the water without it, the utility should hire contractors for traffic control if they don't have a sufficient number of employees available.

It's one thing for a short-term emergency job, like a car wreck taking out a pole section with a transformer spill and mess of wires down, but it's certainly NOT OK for an ongoing widespread overhead line restoration project, like right now, when they're rebuilding the utility system from scratch as a result of storm damage.

It took a few days to do it but some areas are just now implementing odd-even rationing as a means to reduce congestion at the pumps. It's actually a good practice, given the limited availability and high demand.

Turns out the money has spoken. I'm going to bet large commercial $ponsors have withdrawn financial support from the race because they don't want to be associated with the negative public backlash of promoting the event in the middle of such a widespread disaster.

I think it's absolutely INSANE that they are still planning to hold this resource-hogging event, in the middle of the largest natural disaster to hit the NYC area, ever. Tens of thousands of people are without power, food and water, AND EVEN HOMES, and public resources that could very well assist with those issues will be diverted, for a race...? Under normal circumstances there are many good reasons to sponsor this race. Postpone it. Cancel it. Now.

There are still a few more days left to pre-register for this event! In addition to being a premiere learning experience, this is an annual fundraiser for the Ron Jankowski "92 Engine" Memorial Fund Inc. All seminar proceeds go to the memorial fund which awards scholarships to individuals associated with the Firefighting or Hockey communities, and to causes consistent with the "community assistance" outlook that Ron Jankowski epitomized.

Another unknown with this storm is that all the surface conditions occurring simultaneously are historically unprecedented, in other words, have never existed together. So going with that, the forecast models have no clue as to what is actually going to happen. We have a monster cyclone moving up the east coast, OK you say, we've been there-done that before. Now add a blocking high pressure ridge to the east keeping Sandy along the coast, then we have a vigorous jet stream and a powerful cold front that's moving east. It's not looking pretty.

I'd guess a lot has to do with where this storm hits. Even with a predicted southern NJ landfall, heavy wind and rain effects will be felt for several hundred miles around the center. Once tropical storm conditions (sustained winds >39MPH) are imminent, as observed by the National Weather Service, local districts need to make a hard decision if it's going to be too dangerous for students and staff to be out and about traveling to and from school due to wind and possible flooding. NY City Transit is already planning on shutting their systems down to protect the riding public, their staff and equipment should tropical storm conditions and flooding become apparent. You hit the nail on the head, Joe. One person acting out of control caused this tragic accident, there is no excuse for driving anywhere like that. What is even more shocking is he apparently failed to accept responsibility for causing the accident in the first place. He got off easy.
