Are we reading the same post? You completely missed GAW6's point. In addition to addressing a snide remark, she agrees some agencies can become so overwhelmed they can no longer keep up with the call volume with their limited volunteer staff. These are circumstances where a paid response becomes an inevitable solution .

Let's not forget the term firefighter is gender-neutral. I am certain there are many great female firefighters with all the requisite qualities, including "balls".

Providing a reliable EMS response is the district's prime concern, they realized their limited number of unpaid volunteers can only do so much, and it wasn't enough. The dedicated volunteers who break their necks providing resources to their communities would bristle at the idea of being referred to as members of a social club.

Forget the buzzers, bells, lights, whistles,,,Nothing beats a pre-flight visual check: the driver walks around the rig before putting it in gear. No more crunched doors.

I don't think that a LOJACK has any significant effect on the number or frequency of auto theft incidents, though it might help increase the recovery rate of stolen vehicles equipped with it, if activated in a timely fashion. I've personally always questioned the cost/benefit of the device; will the comprehensive insurance premium reduction(s) offset the cost to install and maintain the unit?

It's basically a regular scanner that will receive radio transmissions over the air that are within range, using pre-programmed frequencies based on the geographic area entered.

I'm somewhat surprised there was not a standing "no-raise" order for the ladder in the station, due to the proximity of the transmission power lines. Totally avoidable.

I saw this story on TV news this morning. I wonder how long it will take where the neighboring departments in these situations are gonna get fed up and just say NO, when called for help? They can barely cover a single alarm. That's disgusting. The politicians blame the unions for not accepting unreasonable pay and benefit reduction demands to forestall the personnel cuts, and then go ahead and decline to fund essential services. This is an absolute failure of government. It's primary responsibilities include providing for the safety of the public, it's residents, the taxpayers. Additionally, they're effectively taxing their neighbors by using their resources, which someone else paid for, on what is becoming an alarmingly regular basis.

Looks great! We would love to have some more pics of this new engine!!!

Please, just a thought, one-line post comments such as "nice pic" or "great shot" tends to take away from the gallery feel. Instead, you might want to consider casting a positive vote for the post, using the button. This will also allow us all to see which images are getting the most membership approval ratings. You can cast your vote, plus you can add a quick remark there, if desired.

LT Steven Velasquez, FF Michel Baik, may you both rest in peace.

The Incident Commander doesn't always have to be the most senior or even most knowledgeable person on a scene. In many cases an incident command is established and being managed at a scene by the first arriving qualified responder, often someone other than a Chief. And then just because the Chief or other senior member arrives that alone doesn't necessarily require an automatic transfer of command. Many incidents turn out to only require a minimum level of response, and the Chief or other "senior" arriving individual can always elect to maintain the existing command structure without necessarily assuming the white hat, provided the incident is either under control or not expected to escalate further.

Google maps gave a similar location as Bing, so I was mistaken it was one of the 4-unit attached town home cluster's that was involved, or in even a worse case, the mansion itself! Tough conditions out there, (yesterday) with the heat! Glad everyone is safe.

You started to lose me with the 100 firefighter remark, then completed the transition with the "vollies are too damn stubborn" bit. Seriously, it's the municipalities responsibility to decide if a paid department is the right choice for protection, and not the volunteer personnel themselves. There are a few bad apples in every barrel, and while the volunteer service as a whole might be in serious trouble in some areas, it's not altogether broken. Your brush is a bit too broad. And let's not turn this into another paid-vs- vollie thread. There are enough of those in the trash can already.

My feeling is residency should not be a factor in hiring, simply take the best qualified candidate, regardless of where he/she chooses to live. Bottom line, it's the employees problem to get to the job on time, even if it is a 2+ hour drive each way.

These are the only ConEd vehicles that display other than amber warning lights. Whether it's "legal" or not, is another issue. Personally, I don't think any LEO would have a problem with those lights these vehicles display, since they are only used during incidents. ConEd commercial vehicles CAN and do go on the County's passenger-car-only parkways but only for a bonefide emergency response, such as a confirmed gas line rupture, or other similar major incidents. We would make a courtesy call to the County PD dispatcher advising them of the emergency use and the destination. Otherwise the responders are usually stuck in the same road traffic as everyone else trying to go somewhere.

I believe the picture was in the White Plains Post Rd fire album, third image, the Tahoe behind E71: http://www.emtbravo....howtopic=37657#

I used to work alongside these guys. They are from the Emergency Response Group working out of the gas and electric Emergency Control Centers. There are individual gas and electric department responders, but they cross-cover for each other. Their purpose is to provide support for the local gas or electric personnel and can act as the utility company white hat assisting the on-scene incident commander while local operations forces work on mitigating the emergency.
