Just so everyone gets an idea of what it costs, just the server {computer} that hosts the Bravo sites alone is almost $300 a month. This is actually a bargain! That is the current base cost and does not include software maintenance, updates, or troubleshooting problems. Those incidents are extra, billable on an hourly basis. Excess bandwidth charges can add more if the site exceeds traffic thresholds. The software that runs the sites is not owned but licensed and that costs even more every year. Given the site activity and existing software, a less expensive hosting alternative doesn't make any sense, since the quality of the site is dependent on the server, moving to a cheaper option would harm the site experience with much slower page response times and with less features. QOS, or up-time, is also a HUGE factor. Having a reliable site that is practically always available 24/7 is not a luxury. A member subscription model to pay for it all is only one of the things we're looking into.

I was wondering how long that would take.... LOL

Well done, Chief, It appears we can shelve the back-up comm plan, for the time being anyway. It was much more than a drill, since today's incident had many an unexpected turn of events. We have a good handle on those who are not Shift Commanders.

Thank you!! to everyone who stepped up and helped fund the site operating expenses! Note: The reason the site donation tracker appeared "stuck" before is the tracker requires the manual acceptance of donations and updates only after that is done.

I, for one, am impressed with the outpouring of support shown today, especially financially, and of the kind words for Seth and his efforts. I'm pleased to be involved with the site operation and hope the current trend for the membership to support EMTBravo continues. I can't speak for Seth, with the support shown today, it just might be enough to help keep the site online a while longer! I'm Keeping my fingers crossed!!! George, eight more generous donations have posted since 14:30, we'll look into the tracker. Thanks.

I've been there for the sunset flag ceremony. It is really something to see. It's very touching.

If they don't resolve this quickly, I will have lots of company with no Giants on TV today. Up here Comcast is airing reruns of COPS at game time. I guess I'll just head up to the Wellfleet Oyster Festival and chow down.

That won't help them... They are looking to improve their department...

Facebook has many redeeming qualities, people can reconnect with each other after a long absence, or stay in touch with status updates, or organize class reunions, post photos and such. Depends on your preferences. Facebook can also get you into serious trouble with your bosses, as a Bourne, MA. Firefighter is finding out: This guy is about to be disciplined, maybe even canned over remarks he made online. http://www.capecodon...6/NEWS/10160343 It turns out you can't just post whatever you feel like, and blindly expect the first amendment to protect you. Same goes for joining online hate groups and other seemingly innocuous individual behaviors. What you may think is only a joke, could have unwanted ramifications. Depending on your employer's expectations of you, your responsibilities, including character, be it on or off the job, everything you do can reflect either positively or negatively and could have an impact on your work relationship. If you post it, it will be read, and it could get you in hot water!

Remarkable how this comes just in time for the world renowned, California " wild-fire season" where they will need all the help they can get! Politicians....

I think Officer Osso should be the one to approve or disapprove any "deals" being offered to his assailant. After all it is his life that has been destroyed by this slimebag. Make this perp serve nothing less than the longest sentence for the most serious charge, assault-1, 25 yrs, and then if they still want, play games with concurrent terms for every other offense he is convicted of. When he's done here, send him back to Connecticut to serve the time for those charges.

A Veteran Fire Chief said: City spokeswoman Esmeralda Diaz Cameron responds: Spoken like a true (flak) mouthpiece, Esmerelda. Go ahead, Keep your head in the sand, and pray that nobody gets hurt. Hello? You just blew off 40 years of urban firefighting experience warning everyone, as opposed to your, what, ZERO, experience?

Confined Space entry training is not optional. In my experience while working for a large Gas and Electric utility company, anyone who's job entails entry into a confined space is REQUIRED to have documented employer-provided OSHA training and refreshers, be supplied with proper atmospheric testing equipment and necessary PPE. OSHA standards 29CFR 1910.146 In a nutshell: Once testing determines the confined space atmosphere is hazardous per the standards,it becomes a permit-required confined space, with enhanced entry supervision and rescue/retrieval requirements for entrants. Otherwise you just don't go in.

This group is supposed to be exploring whether or not to merge the Fairview, Greenville and Hartsdale fire districts, which provide fire protection to the town of Greenburg, into one town-wide department.

They can zero in pretty close to the source, I'll wager. Laser beams are like tracer bullets... they work both ways.

RIP FF Kelly and FF Ruggiero. This is a tragic loss for their families and community.

If I'm not mistaken, civilian dispatchers for DPS and 60 Control are all represented by CSEA and are given the same County entrance exam. Where they work when hired is based on the available position openings. There should be no reason why these employees could not be cross-trained to handle either function, if anything, that way open shifts might be filled more easily from a larger pool of operators. In my opinion there would be little gained by merging these dispatch operations other than perhaps eliminating administrative/supervisory positions of those that do not sit in "the room" and perform daily dispatch duties. The savings from that alone simply does not justify building a joint communications facility.

Capt, I was just going to say that. The employer is responsible for providing their employees with suitable personal protective equipment according to the job hazard matrix, and it's up to the employee to know when and how to use it. I know of many occasions when I was supervising my crews, they needed to be "reminded" to put on ear muffs or wear goggles, etc, while working a covered task. Annual OSHA refresher courses are required precisely for this reason.

Good for the officers and villages of Bronxville and Tuckahoe. In the future when White Plains decides it needs to hire more officers, my bet is none of the laid-off officers will apply, given they got the shaft from the city once, already. And what's up with the school down there, anyway? "sorry, our students don't do that." ?!!

Happy Birthday to our Battalion 12 Deputy Fire Coordinator, Tom Farrington!.

Well said, Chief Rafferty. It was not my intention to call you out negatively on your use of a word with multiple meanings. Quite the opposite in fact.. I imagine most of our forum audience instinctively understood your meaning, male oriented slang intended to convey courage, guts and gumption, respect, among other traits, and not having anything to do with anatomy. Political correctness is for woosies.
