  1. Or maybe, it's just because they can.
  2. Not withstanding my age impaired memory, I seem to recall that an air medical system in Texas was doing something similar to this years ago. I don't know how it worked for them.
  3. http://www.midhudsonnews.com/News/2014/May/05/Farrell_funr_set-05.html For those that may be able to participate, Sgt Farrell, KIA in Afghanistan and member of Accord FD, will return to Stewart Airport on Wednesday, May 7. The time I have been told is around 10am, but you may want to confirm that. I do not know the route the procession will take.
  4. Our department has had such a policy for many years. In addition to the hours junior members are allowed at the firehouse, they are also prohibited from responding to calls outside the district, have to meet academic requirements, and their membership is subject to parental consent until they graduate or are otherwise considered to be emancipated. Although I am not positive, the hours on school nights may be due to child labor laws.
  5. Not that I am aware of. The long term storage of the data helps to determine a persons patterns, whether they are suspect in a crime or not. Just like your EZ-Pass tag is read in places no where near a toll. The government also uses facial recognition technology scanned from drivers license photos to build databases. We are increasingly under surveillance. Evermore it is up to the individual to prove his innocence rather than the states' duty to prove guilt.
  6. Not to distract from this thread, but on a related note, here is a link to an article regarding an LODD upstate. Once again, a failure to have proper training and policies/procedures in place. http://www.pressconnects.com/article/20140308/NEWS01/303080060/Watchdog-Report-What-went-wrong-Newark-Valley-fatal-fire?odyssey=mod|dnmiss|umbrella|1
  7. A bit of good news today, although they upheld most of the law, the 7 round limit was overturned today in federal district court. A small victory but hopefully more on appeal.
  8. Years ago, I started switching, as did thousands of others, to energy star rated appliances, cfl's /leds, and water saving devices. The electric company soon realized that all this saving by the people was hurting their bottom line. So as people use less electricity, rates go up. All the switching didn't save me a thing as I now pay more to use less. Add in the hundreds of jobs lost in the US because of this as manufacturers closed plants and the mercury laden cfls creating new types pollution sources and problems. Additionally, while using less energy to operate, cfl and led bulbs, when compared to incandescent bulbs, use more energy, precious and toxic metals to produce. The bulbs are also EPA classified as hazardous waste. How many homeowners are hanging on to their burned out cfl or led waiting for the annual county hazardous waste collection (Which costs them money and time)? Give me my Edison back.
  9. (For Winona Lake) Both 320 and 322 are to be replaced. Right now, the current thought is that 322 will be replaced first. The engine had a refurb in '07(?) so we wanted to get rid of it while it still has some resale/trade in value (among other reasons). The new 322 would then become 1st due and 320 2nd due. The main reasons for KME over Pierce, as I understand it, was engine selection ie: Cummins vs Detroit. Pierce was a little higher with the boat anchor Detroit while KME bid with the Cummins. Pierce wanted too much for the Cummins option. I haven't seen Dan Leghorn's engine yet but understand it will be usable. After several changes/recommendations made by the chiefs who originally were left out of the design process.
  10. So, I'm willing to bet that the 2500 Van chassis used by most commercial agencies falls short. Two crew, pt, equipment, sometimes a third and maybe a family member.... But then again, how much of our fire apparatus is over weight? Has your department weighed your trucks after you put them in service?
  11. I've seen our local vollies run with 4 or 5 on a call. Then not be able to get another bus out for a second call.
  12. Dan Leghorn (Orange Lake) is supposed to take delivery of the new KME engine on Monday. Winona Lake's KME has been ordered. ETA end of February or early March.
  13. 3 transported ALS, 2 BLS. Engine was completely upside down. Prayers to all involved.
  14. There is enough waste of taxpayer resources in my own district to be worried about someone 100 miles away.
  15. At ease, soldier. Carry on. Rest in peace. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/10/06/nicholas-oresko-dies-medal-of-honor-wwii-veteran_n_4053498.html
  16. Final thoughts on this and my apologies to the OP for the direction some, including myself, have taken this thread. 1. Not a member of the "tea party". 2. The "thinning the herd" comment was more what I was thinking. 3. ANY LEO or HCP here, that say they don't judge a suspect or patient in some way is a liar. We ALL do it, whether you want to admit it or not. Are you honestly going to say that you haven't judged, in some way, the EDP that you have responded to the 15th time? The drunk that wrecked his car? The frequent flyer? The homeless alcoholic? The "seeker"? The nursing home? Do you see the elderly white lady driving the Buick the same as you do the middle aged black man driving the Mercedes? Would it make a difference if that white lady were in the grocery store parking lot and the black man was in your neighborhood or "the hood"? We ALL judge. Yet rather than admit it, you would rather crucify me here because I admit that I don't have the same level of "compassion" for the addict as I might for someone else. Look in the mirror ladies and gentlemen.
  17. A suspect shoots and kills two of your co-workers and you are pursuing him. He crashes, is critically injured and no longer a threat.. Are you going to do everything you can, including c-spine, to possibly save his life or pull him from the wreck and handcuff him?
  18. I'm not saying I scream to a scene lights and sirens only to judge. Actually, I've been accused of driving too slowly to a scene and often respond without l&s. And I'm not saying that once on scene I wouldn't treat a pt without using all the tools available to me. You have made those assumptions.
  19. I guess maybe I'm just getting old and cold. You want to shoot up and OD, well that's the chance you take. It may be a cool new toy to play with, but its my ever increasing tax dollars at work. Save 'em so we can save 'em again next weekend. Eventually you just need to let Darwin do his work.
  20. I could never figure out why there are different treatment protocols from region to region. If one were standing on the regional border and had a heart attack, treatments could depend on which way he fell. Just never made sense to me.
  21. Since I wasn't there, and still trying to find out specifics, there are a lot of variables. However, with that being said, IF the tank, which I have come to understand was a 500 gal (I believe it was an underground tank) , was not significantly compromised, it is possible, with proper training and equipment, to evacuate the liquid propane from the tank. If the tank was "full" (80% = 400 gal), this could be done in under an hour. There are ways, even if the tank is compromised, to remove the gas from the tank. Flaring the gas is done often, however, it is also the most time consuming. In NY, the NYPGA (NY Propane Gas Association) maintains a list of trained responders. Each county 911 center has this list and can call the nearest responder. Again, if anyone can provide me with more specifics on the situation, I'd appreciate it.
  22. I have read articles relating to this in the past few days. A lot of mis-information likely to induce sensationalism in the press. Who got lucky enough to baby sit the flaring of the tank for 24 hrs? I'll have to see if I can find more info as to why they didn't just pump the remaining gas. Anybody on here that was at the scene or has direct knowledge of the incident, please, e-mail me.
  23. There was an EmStar ambulance parked at an office bldg. in Rockland Co several weeks ago. Spring Valley/Monsey area on Rt 59.
  24. On Wednesday, the Coldenham Fire Dept responded to an MVA to find it involved one of their members. Robert Cruver, 53, was killed in the crash. One of his sons, Matt, is an EMT and works for MLSS. He was one of the first on scene. Lets keep the Cruver and Coldenham families in our prayers through this time. If you are able, services are Sunday, 9/15 at Goodwill Church, Rt 208, Montgomery. Visitation from 4-7 with funeral services and firematic services following.
  25. Fios1 News reporting FunTown Pier collapsed. Fire reportedly contained to 5 blocks.
