Apparently, the county-wide open house wasn't too successful. http://www.pressconnects.com/apps/pbcs.dll.../801200343/1001 That's too bad, it sounded like a good idea.

Mmm... No ULS Kero? Maybe it is just LS Kero that they have. I don't know the PPM of LS Kero. I hope they don't convert home heating oil. I get a pretty good discount and I still can't afford it! But as to original post, we fuel our apparatus whenever they get to 3/4 so they are almost always full. They have 50 - 60 gallon tanks and it is rare that we any kind of extended operations. If necessary though, we would have a contractor come to the scene.

Hi Dave, I read that story also. Do you remember several years ago when the Press ran a series of articles called "911- The State of Fire Services" (orsomething like that)? Binghamton is my hometown. Well, actually West Colesville. I believe one of my older brothers vollied in Vestal for a while and my little brother is Car 2/Captain at Port Dickinson. (Side bar -- Do you still all sound the siren at 11am on 11/11? His daughters were responsible for that getting started again). Anyway, it'll be interesting to hear if the county wide open house is a sucess. Good to meet someone from "home".

I know Ulster CC had one last year. They don't hold one every year though. Phelps had one last year as well. The problem is that there isn't much of a demand for the EMT-I or EMT-CC.

Winona Lake did about 545. Not sure of the exact # right now. Maybe 3of those EMS. We don't do EMS as a general rule, only by ambulance request.

For our district, I believe, that the chief and a**'t chief, can use the district vehicles for personal use as long as they are able to respond. They can use them to commute to work within a 30 mile radius as long as they are able to respond from work. Out of area travel ok as long as it is for fire district business or approved function.

Just to clarify, I AM NOT an employer, but I have heard those excuses used by managers. And yes, it is sad. Sad but true.

Look at it from an employers point of view. Why should I, as an employer, pay more than $10 when I have stacks of applications from people willing to do the job for that. I also have EMT's that b**** and complain about being mandated, given that job, or working OT, only to go home and VOLUNTEER the next 12 - 24 hrs doing the same thing for no $$.

Short of volunteers, ambulance corps folds December 19, 2007 Otisville — The Mount Hope Volunteer Ambulance Corps disbanded this week because of a severe lack of volunteers. That means, for the time being, that Regional EMS will respond from Middletown to all calls in the town and village, as it normally does for calls that the volunteers can't cover. Capt. Dan Dodd said it has been daunting to recruit volunteers because of increasing demands on their time, stricter certification requirements and the corps' lack of its own building and crew quarters. The corps operated out of the Otisville Fire Department's building. The Mount Hope Town Board will host a meeting at 7:30 tonight at Town Hall to discuss the issue. From today's (12/19/07 Times-Herald Record)

The one, and only, commercial company I worked for started me at $10/hr. Within 2 months that increased to $12.50. Since I have a CDL, I was also used for their Ambulette service as well. I worked as a PCT at a hospital and started at $12.09. Shift and weekend diffs could add up to another $3.25. I live in Orange Co. Locally, using Gov't guidelines for "affordable" housing, you need $21/hr to afford a 2 bedroom apt. While I enjoyed the work, I didn't enjoy the 80 - 100 hr work weeks necessary to make a living. I make as much working 40 hrs sitting in a dump truck watching dirt, reading my newspaper, and drinking my coffee, with weekends and holidays off.

I didn't see the video, but I had a friend who insisted that his wife could burn water. He showed me one night at his house. He took a 2 liter soda bottle and filled it from the tap. As bubbles rose to the surface he lit it with a lighter. It burned a nice blue flame for several seconds. Apparently, when the well was drilled, it passed through a small vein of natural gas that was mixing with the water. No different taste but cool to watch.

I know that when I worked doing transports, we were supposed to fill out the CMN and have it signed. The form we used was very simple with two boxes to check. One for if the pt needed an ambulance, one for ambulette. On the back of the form, we had to put the reason why the pt needed a stretcher. Sometimes, depending on the transport, I would not fill it out. There was no need for it. One pt that we regularly transported was for dialysis. Not to say that this guy didn't have problems. He was brain damaged and in a wheelchair. An electric, motorized chair that he could somewhat control. He didn't need an ambulance. His mother, with whom he lived, didn't want to be inconvenienced (IMO) and insurance wouldn't pay for a 'lette. So they wanted us to fill out the form that he needed a 'lance. I wouldn't do it. Once we had to wait for him to get home from getting his hair cut before we could transport. Anyway, that is way off topic from the OP. When I worked at the company that was originally the base for this topic, 12's were normal schedule, 24's were common, and 36's were not unusual. My top week there was 96 hrs.

Winona Lake, T/Newburgh, will be receiving their refurbished 87 Pierce Engine 322. It went OOS in July(?) and went back to Pierce for refurb. Tank was upped from 500 to 1000. Seats, lighting, etc brought up to current NFPA. Engine was supposed to be back in mid-November, but was delayed. We should have it sometime between Christmas and New Years.

Sometimes, but not usually. About 1/3 of the time in my POV. Almost never in the fire apparatus. When I was working in EMS, I did about 1/2 the time when up front, never in the back. I do most of the time at my regular job only because I can be fired if I am caught without it. Don't ask. I have my reasons.

or you could have a rank system, Junior, firefighter, lieutenant, captain...etc based on reaching a certain number of posts to get to each level.

Seems as though this was the info I posted yesterday here that was, for whatever reason, removed. I guess it's not "official" until it's in the newspaper or other "credible" publication.

I, too, worked with him in my time at ESA. He was a good EMT with a good head on his shoulders. He had a lot of potential. To his family, both at home and EMS, and to Jenn, my condolences. As soon as someone has info on services, please post.
